"Who The Hell Shoots A Lab?"
A cop, that's who. This is the slaughtered Lab, Miller, with Emma Muzzi.
The question in the header is a response from @SigSpace to my tweet:
@amyalkon
Terrible. & how horrible when "better" option is telling your child that her doggy, gunned down by cop, was run over
It was my comment on a retweet of this:
@ChuckRossDC
Miss. family's yellow lab was on a leash, but a cop shot it twice anyway.
His story, from The Daily Caller, was that Tyler Muzzi, about to head into work, saw a man lurking outside a neighbor's house. He called the neighbor to alert him, and the neighbor called the cops. The Muzzi's say the family's dog, Miller, was restrained on a line in the backyard when a Cleveland cop shot him:
Cleveland's police chief later admitted that the officer knew Miller was restrained but that he was still within his rights to shoot...."Tyler walked back inside and heard two gunshots," Bethany Muzzi described on Facebook. "Thinking the [suspect] got away he went outside and all of the officers were standing around casually and said 'hey man is that your dog?'"What do you think?
"Apparently the investigator had arrived and walked back to the backyard without asking the other officers whether or not there was a dog."What do you think?
She said that as the investigator walked up, Miller ran over to him. Feeling threatened, the investigator shot Miller, Muzzi said.
...After Miller was shot, the officers stood around Miller as he whimpered, according to the Muzzis. Tyler Muzzi ran inside to get towels to wrap around the dog to take him to the vet. An hour after dropping Miller off, the vet called back saying that the bullets had severed his spine and that he would have to be put down. What do you think?
...The investigator who shot Miller was placed on administrative leave. The Muzzis say they are considering suing the police department. In the meantime, they've struggled to explain to their young daughter what happened to Miller. What do you think?
"We told her he was run over," Bethany Muzzi wrote to friends [on] Facebook. "We wanted to preserve her innocence in knowing that policemen are here to protect us. (Which we strongly believe!)."
More here.
Oh, and by the way, Labs are often used as therapy dogs for children with autism and others because of their kind temperament. From Wikipedia:
Although they will sometimes bark at noise, especially noise from an unseen source ("alarm barking"), Labradors are usually not noisy or territorial. They are often very easygoing and trusting with strangers and therefore are not usually suitable as guard dogs.

I'm irritated that the identity of this investigator is being protected. He won't be punished by the law and now he won't even be publicly shamed.

...he was still within his rights to shoot.
Uninvited guests in my yard shooting at my dogs? I would be within my rights to shoot them, yes?
I don't care that you "felt threatened". Perhaps you should get a different job, wild flower...

If a cop is negligent and his trained K9 gets loose on MY property and starts killing my pets...it's ok if I shoot and kill it right?

What about charges of animal cruelty for leaving their K9s inside parked cars and letting them die of heat stroke? They wouldn't give them one week of paid leave would they?

The answer to your question in this case is a pussy. And more than a few of them have a badge and a gun but probably shouldn't have either.
The family should publicize the shooter's name.

I hope this family sues for big bucks. A Lab is a big, fat, wet, sloppy kiss just waiting to happen. I have never met a Lab that didn't love people.
And this dog was on a tie-out, so all the cop had to do is stay out of reach! The cop is a moron, and should not be allowed to run around armed.
My heartfelt condolences to the family, I hope they get justice for the murder of their pup.
Kat at June 21, 2015 4:30 PM
While it is possible that this lab was an exception; every Lab I've met is as Kat said: A big, fat, wet, sloppy kiss just waiting to happen.
Only St. Bernard's can top them.
We had a Lab when I was not yet in school age; Boy, did that dog put up with a lot from us kids.
I remember before I could ice skate all I had to do was grab our Lab's tail and she would pull me along the ice as she ran along with the older kids who could skate. She didn't seem to mind having the extra weight (ok, I wasn't yet in school, so, I didn't weigh that much) dragging along.

This bothers me more:
"We wanted to preserve her innocence in knowing that policemen are here to protect us. (Which we strongly believe!)."
This family is completely bonkers, nutjobs, ready to use their vote to get laws passed for other people.
Because they don't or won't admit that police aren't magical beings - that they do NOT have any duty whatsoever to protect anyone. Police volunteer to do that, but the best they can do is establish a bias favoring law and order - and this moron officer needs to be outed and ousted for betraying this family's trust, however naive.
Radwaste at June 21, 2015 8:12 PM
He should also be ousted for betraying his brothers in blue. I refuse to believe most cops would shoot a leashed dog.

A friend's husband is a cop in a Philly suburb. He actually was collecting evidence for IA on a really lazy, bad officer in his department, and then the guy shot a dog, and the higher up union reps told him to back the hell off of the investigation. A lot of the corruption endemic to the police forces rests on the FOP, who wants to be worth their dues money.

Only liberals hate the police. Get on the side of righteousness you hippies!

I mentioned this at alt . obituaries and here's what turned up:
Sarah:
"We had a Deputy Sheriff in Charles County MD who enjoyed shooting people's restrained dogs. He got away with it for a while but eventually when he was shooting 4 and 5 dogs a month the Sheriff's department woke up and realized all the complaints about the piece of trash were true."
I then found this and she confirmed it.

"We wanted to preserve her innocence in knowing that policemen are here to protect us. (Which we strongly believe!)."
Except that they just shot your dog for no good reason other than they can or that they are a bunch of wimps scared of a dog on a leash.
Then again, if they're suing, best stay on the good side of public opinion and the cops for now. That or they are afraid of retaliation from the cops for a lawsuit etc.. Hard to tell anymore. Plenty of police departments that I would be afraid of suing for fear of retaliation.
I really can't read about these horror stories anymore. They make me too mad.

Cop shoots dog = bad.
Cop shoots mother of 9 (his own ex-wife) and other cops stand around for half an hour watching and letting him do it = professional courtesy.

Cheetah cubs in captivity are raised with lab puppies-cheetahs are nervous and high strung, labs are confident and laid back. Cheetahs thrive when given a little lab friend to grow and live with, much better than when raised on their own.
Cops that shoot dogs who aren't attacking suck. But it's not as if all cops do. There are a percentage of sadists in any profession, because there is a percentage of sadists in the human population. They're probably more drawn to certain professions. There's certainly some in the nursing community, but by no means the majority. I'd assume the same about cops.
This one should be fired.
