Affirmative Action In Nobel Prize-Dispensing Didn't Work Out So Well
The former director of Norway's Nobel Institute regrets giving Obama the Nobel in 2009. Meghan Bartlett writes in the Wash Times:
The former director of Norway's Nobel Institute revealed this week that he regrets the committee's decision to give the 2009 Nobel Peace award to President Obama.Geil Lundestad, director at the institute for 25 years, said in his just-published memoir that he and the committee had unanimously decided to grant the award to Mr. Obama just after his election in 2009 more in hopes of aiding the American president to achieve his goals on nuclear disarmament, rather than in recognition of what Mr. Obama had already accomplished.
"[We] thought it would strengthen Obama and it didn't have this effect," he told the Associated Press in an interview.

Fantastic. The Nobel Prize as a participation trophy. If everyone gets a cupcake, when does Assad or Iran get a Nobel?
mer at September 17, 2015 7:07 AM
Exactly. They diminished the value of the Nobel with this gesture.

Heck, even my dog sussed this as a self inflicted wound that even cats would smart enough to avoid.
Granted, he's a Golden Retriever, so much more sensible than, say, your garden variety progressive. Still, you'd think that would be yet another cautionary tale for the ages about why the cult of personality is a Very Bad Thing.

President Obama was probably just as shocked as anyone else that he received the Nobel Peace Prize. It wouldn't surprise me to find out he had considered declining on the grounds he hadn't done anything to deserve it. However, when people like Glenn Beck were suggesting that he give it back, there was no way Obama was going to do that.
Fayd at September 17, 2015 8:09 AM
I guess they didn't count on their award winner becoming Barack "Drone Strike" Obama.
So, out of curiousity, Nobel Institute, is the world a more peaceful place, or less, since you gave that award to Teh Won?
Also, Obama wasn't shocked in the least as I'm sure the nomination came from within his camp, and I doubt the thought of turning it down ever entered into his mind.

"It wouldn't surprise me to find out he had considered declining on the grounds he hadn't done anything to deserve it."
Haha, good joke! Yes, everything Obama does wrong is Glenn Beck's fault.
Unless it's Rush Limbaugh's.

I call hogwash on Geil Lundestad. What he is trying to do is damage control.
They don't regret for a minute giving Obama the Nobel; but, they do regret that their not-thought-out idea diminished the value of the Nobel.
And that he now claims it was to help Obama achieve his goal of "nuclear disarmament" further shows how naïve they are. The US disarming nuclear weapons would be like trying to set up the world as a "gun free zone" where only the criminals have guns and the rest of us are sitting ducks.
Can they really be that naïve? Or is it a now made up excuse and they think that we are really stupid to believe them?
Either way, they have made themselves irrelevant.

I just received this reply to an email where i was trying to help the site owner with a broken link on their site!
I'd like you to go stick your head in the toilet and flush, and then go fuck yourself. How awful that you have to try to earn a living as a lying piece of shit. Have a bad day.

"don't regret for a minute giving Obama the Nobel; but, they do regret that their not-thought-out idea diminished the value of the Nobel."
What they really regret, and their only regret is that Obama made them look like the pack of imbeciles that they are.....

"The Nobel Prize as a participation trophy. "
It's worse than that. Lundestad is admitting that they expected a quid pro quo: advancement of the committee's policy preferences, in exchange for the prize. The hilariously ironic part is that they didn't consider that Obama would do what leftists always do: accept the payoff and then do what they were going to do anyway. The Peace Prize was already pretty tarnished (they awarded one to Yassir Arafat, y'know), but this pretty much spiked it. And it damanged the reputation of all of the Nobel prizes, which is unfair to the people who have been awarded the science and math prizes.

Recently, BHO bragged that he had bombed 7 countries!
GWB bombed 3...
The Nobel prize has become a joke; many years ago in fact when they gave Yasser Arafat the prize...
Yasser robbed Palestine of billions. Last I heard his wife and child live in one of the most expensive flats in Paris.
babs at September 17, 2015 11:14 AM
I don't see how this damaged the reputation of the peace prize. As others have pointed out, look at who else has won the prize. Plenty of scum bags there. It has always been a purely political award.
Also, I'm no fan of Obama. But I do remember when he won this. I think it was a complete surprise and that he did consider turning it down. And I don't blame Glen Beck for him taking the award. Obama is just pissy like that. Say something he is on the fence is stupid and he'll do it just to tick you off.
Ben at September 17, 2015 11:33 AM
I voted for Obama, and even I thought it was a horrible idea. It felt like they were trying to control him through the prize.
NicoleK at September 17, 2015 11:39 AM
They diminished the value of the Nobel with this gesture.
Not really, as others have mentioned they gave one to Arafat, a terrorist.
They've given it to organizations that have nothing to do with promoting peace.
They've given it to the UN
They've given it to the Dali Lama who headed an organization that cut out the eyes of pesants for criticizing his monks and their regime powered by slave labor
They've given it to Mother Tersa who was a sadist, murderer, hypocrite, seller of indulgences, and a money launderer.

" I think it was a complete surprise and that he did consider turning it down."
I think he believes he richly deserved the Prize at least a decade before he "won" it.
If he considered for even one second turning it down, it was over the insult of being passed over so many times.
dee nile at September 17, 2015 12:48 PM
... and I bet he also thinks he's deserved the peace prize every year since. Along with Nobels in literature, economics and several other subjects.
dee nile at September 17, 2015 2:41 PM
Geil Lundestad's regret is sooo two decades ago.
Nowadays, he should express his disappointment by accusing Obama of rape. How so? As we know now, rape is a continuum, and all rape is political. It's Mzr. Lundestan's experience that matters. So do his feelings; his healing begins by sharing his pain, but can only resolve if brought into the balm or our cultural zeitgeist.

Does anyone know what Marlene is going on about?
Meanwhile, take a lesson from the Nobel prize people: if you give someone something that they have not earned, they lose the concept that other people actually earn what they have.
Radwaste at September 17, 2015 7:09 PM
Then why in the world is they giving him a second award and what will be the apology for it in 2020?
Jeff at September 17, 2015 7:15 PM
Why would you give an award to someone for something they haven't accomplished yet, and may never accomplish?
Am I supposed to feel badly for the poor, duped Nobel Prized committee? Why should I? They're idiots. I mean, who really thought anyone could bring about a world without nukes? Even if we thought that the Russians would agree to disarm, how are we going to keep the Iranians, the North Koreans, etc. from acquiring them?
