"Pastafarian" Woman Gets To Have Driver's License Photo Taken With Colander On Her Head
I love that this Massachusetts atheist, Lindsay Miller, fought for -- and won -- the right to get her driver's license photo taken with an upside-down colander on her head.
From AOL:
Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles has granted one woman the right to wear a colander on her head for her drivers license photo.Lindsay Miller practices at the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which, according to their website, is a secular religion that believes the existence of a "spaghetti monster" to be just as possible as the existence of God. Those who practice the religion are known as Pastafarians, but they want to assure you, the religion is 100% real.
When the RMV initially denied Miller's request to take her drivers license photo with a colander on her head, she enlisted the help of the American Humanist Association's Appignani Humanist Legal Center's attorneys to file an appeal and was scheduled to attend an appeal in October about the matter.
However, luckily for Miller, the appeal was postponed and the RMV has decided to let her wear the spaghetti strainer in her photo.
Miller told MyFoxBoston:
"While I don't think the government can involve itself in matters of religion, I do hope this decision encourages my fellow Pastafarian Atheists to come out and express themselves as I have."

Even I know not to tell a woman what to wear.

Ok, so when Jihadi Jane shows up and wants to have her picture taken with her veil on, the DMV is going to say...what, precisely?

That happened several years ago in Florida. The woman wanted her driver's license photo to be in full niqab. It was denied because there is no right to drive. I don't know how the above was decided, but perhaps there is an accomodation rule for religious garb that doesn't prevent identification (e.g., a Sikh turban) and the colander was allowed under equal opportunity grounds.
Love her photo expression.

Does she wear the colander every day? Is wearing it daily actually required by the tenets of pastafarianism?
This is nothing more than a publicity stunt.
Conan the Grammarian at November 17, 2015 7:48 AM
Pastafarians have done this for a number of years. Most states have an exemption for religious hats, under which the colander qualifies. Objects which obscure the face (glasses included) are often refused.

Not a problem. Make it mandatory for her to wear it at all times while driving, or she is driving without a valid license.
The state can play stupid games too.

Maybe the best lesson about Bobby Henderson's exercise is the rampant hypocrisy of the professing Christian.
When they get letters to their site, a surprising number are vile.
Aside from simple exercises as found here - where others assert some desire to see others behave as they wish.

I don't love it. I can't quite articulate why. It's because she doesn't actually believe it, she's just making fun of people who do have beliefs. I find it obnoxious and can't get excited about it.
I'm with the others, make it a requirement for her to wear it when she drives.
NicoleK at November 17, 2015 9:31 AM
meh, it's a hat, so what?... the requirement should be I should be able to see her face.
Personally, I think you shouldn't be able to wear a hat, either, but it looks like they've already made the exemptions...
In any case, it just has to apply to EVERYONE, and we're done.
SwissArmyD at November 17, 2015 9:50 AM
It doesn't obscure her face, and if anything you might consider her point might actually be that accommodations for religion when it comes time to taking driver's licenses are stupid.
And believe it? It's not clear from the day to day activities of many who claim to believe that they believe. But come Lent or Yom Kippur or Eid...
Personally though, I am triggered that the article places scare quotes around The Flying Spaghetti Monster as if his Noodliness was made up tosh!

Whatever I might think of it, our legal principles hold that if you let some people wear headwear in their photos, you have to let anyone do it. However, I will say it figures that it's an aluminum one.

I can't quite articulate why. It's because she doesn't actually believe it, she's just making fun of people who do have beliefs. I find it obnoxious and can't get excited about it.
As I recall, Pastafarianism started when religious zealots wanted to force creationism into the classroom. Since the US government is not allowed to openly prefer one religion over another, Pastafarians demanded equal time in the classroom. This was their way of showing how dumb the Christian demands were.
This woman seems to be following the same principle. She saw religious exemptions allowing people to wear headgear in their pictures, but she was told it wasn't allowed. So she claimed her rights under Pastafarianism. Very much in the spirit of the original founding.
Personally, I think she's right to make the point, but she screwed up. The original goal was to prevent government from making allowances for a specific religion. She missed the target, and has caused government to make more exceptions.
It reminds me of the issue here, where muslim parents wanted their children to skip swimming lessons, because the classes mix boys and girls together. The final decision was "your kids must attend". The decision didn't go quite far enough, because the girls are still allowed to wear burkinis, but it's a step in the right direction.

"I'm with the others, make it a requirement for her to wear it when she drives."
See what I mean?
Radwaste at November 17, 2015 1:13 PM
I think she should have paid a bit more attention to her eye makeup.
The glare from that colander gives her a crazed but washed out kind of look.
If she gets pulled over, that license just screams, "step out of the car lady, and let's do a quick field sobriety test "
Isab at November 17, 2015 5:40 PM
Isab,
The same is true for the pastafarian who wore a colander for his CCL here in Texas. In the end he had to have a full psych review because no one wanted to license a nut job.

Radwaste,
The article is pretty funny too. 'Brave' for doing this in 'Mormon country'?
Oh no! The Mormons are coming! We may have to say 'no' and 'go away'. Maybe even twice. Oh, the horror. The horror.
Ben at November 18, 2015 5:58 AM
Frivolous, obnoxious attention whoring. I've been an atheist my whole life, but atheists like this are an embarrassment.
