On your Reynolds bit, the 1960s is also when you saw a massive increase of US government funding for science. Despite what the simple analysis would lead you to the result of increasing government research dollars is a decrease in the rate of scientific advancement. As partial evidence look at all the advances Reynolds refers to. All but the internet were developed by private companies. Look at space, NASA can't keep it's current tech up to date and working but SpaceX and others can replace NASA's tech in a short timespan.
Not refuting Reynolds's premise, just adding to it. In the end, the bigger the government the smaller the people.
More security theater at the airport leaves passengers' bags at the airport headed for other airports for screening... too little too late imho.

So...how are the bags getting to the other airports? ok, for Tucson, I can see loading up a tractor-trailer and hauling them down. It's 119 miles, or about a two hour drive.
But San Diego? that's 361 miles, or about 6.5 hours.
Or...they're going to load unscreened bags onto aircraft and fly them. And even then, how long will it take to work thru the backlog? Don't expect to see your checked bags for at least two days.
Yeah, theater. It would be hilarious if it weren't so damn tragic...

@IRA Darth: Zero tolerance follies continue apace:
I'm trying to imagine the principal of that school being interviewed on TV by someone with an ounce of sense:
"So, Mr. Toadslobber, you put an entire school on lockdown because of not-a-gun?"
"Well, at our school, we take safety very seriously, and ours is a gun-free school!"
"Indeed it is, Mr. Toadslobber, since nobody appeared to have one."
