Naive Welcome Of Islam In Europe
An Algerian writer -- a former Muslim, Boualem Sansal, has written a dystopian novel, 2084: The End Of The World, picturing a Europe "subjugated by radical Islam."
Hugh Fitzgerald writes about Sansal's thoughts about the current situation in Europe:
He claims that the "welcoming" culture of Germany is "completely naïve," that the condition of women will inevitably worsen with the continuing islamisation of Europe, that "more young people" in Europe are "turning to religion" (and by "religion" he means Islam), that "Islam is gaining traction" among the young, and he blames Europe's refusal to stand up for itself on an "overly tolerant" society.
Gaby Levin writes in Haaretz:
He is courageous and stubborn, ready to shout his opinions, which are unacceptable in his country, Algeria. He has won many literary awards and is greatly admired in countries where his books are published, but he and his family live under threats to their lives. That is Boualem Sansal, an Algerian writer and engineer with a doctorate in economics who was fired from his civil-service job in 2003 due to criticism of the religious establishment and the administration of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who still runs the country.
...In what way is the book's protagonist like you? Is Ati's ambition of breaching the boundaries of Abistan akin to your visit to Jerusalem despite the risks?
"I identify with all those who fight for freedom, and I believe that overall freedom is meaningless unless each of us is free. Those who are enslaved to a murderous ideology like radical Islam, who are presumably fighting for the freedom of the nation, are not coherent. They want to liberate their people in order to enslave them.
"Freedom must be a coherent act that includes many risks. You have to decide what you want: coherent freedom or enslavement and a lack of dignity. My visit to Jerusalem is part of that coherence, since the freedom I'm talking about is not words only, but deeds."
I was especially struck by this comment from Sansal:
Your opinions in your books and during your visit to Jerusalem put you and your family in mortal danger. How do you live in Algeria today?"If we devote too much thought to danger, we're paralyzed and do nothing. To do nothing means to die -- it's suicide.

Now, there hasn't been enough awareness about New Year's Eve in Europe, obviously... Cologne was just one venue for atrocities, including rape.
But how come no one else (and I mean nobody) who I've read in description of these matters for the last five months affirms that the problem was religion?
Amy's certainty that she just knows all about this when others don't seems ever more hollow.
Crid at June 4, 2016 2:00 AM
Come on Crid. It's a cultural ("We want to do this") thing hiding behind religious text and this stuff has gone on and is going on just due to human nature.
It only stops when a bigger force is applied regardless of the casualties. Someone somewhere just decides to hell w/it and decides this behavior ends now and a war of some sort is started.
Hell, it's going on in Utah in a similar fashion.

You mean someone is actually writing a dystopian future novel instead of a teenage girl romance novel in a dystopian future setting novel?
I was expecting an overqualified but overlooked teen girl as a lead protagonist.

Forget New York and California.
It's the down-home wisdom of Real America that truly makes America great.
For example: forcing your pregnant 14 year old daughter to marry her rapist.

Gack! Wrong thread. This is what happens when I get up at this indecent hour.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at June 4, 2016 6:49 AM
Love the way the article describes the rapist as a "family friend who had raped her."
You'd think at that point, he'd be described as a former family friend.
I guess when the rape of your daughter is statutory and the girl says she wants to marry him, you can still be friends in Idaho.
Conan the Grammarian at June 4, 2016 7:38 AM
I know a very well-educated conservative in his late 40s who pretty much believes that statutory rape laws should be done away with because the victim often "wants it."
Obviously, he doesn't quite grasp that those laws have nothing to do with what minors "want." Adults have no defensible right to sleep with minors. Period. (Among other things, any doctor will tell you that teen pregnancy is downright dangerous for the girl - and if she gives birth, the baby will likely have lingering health problems.)
I asked him "what if YOU had a young daughter targeted by some one like that?" It made no difference to him.
IIRC, he'd never heard of premature puberty (due to too many hormones in our food these days, I think) - but even if he had, I'm pretty sure he wasn't aware that even preteens - or even 9-year-olds - sometimes look to be in their late teens.
Hint: If someone looks like a highschooler but is not on Facebook, chances are that person is underage.
lenona at June 4, 2016 8:05 AM
Define minor though. Depending on the context the age of accountability according the the government stretches from 12(murder) to never(drugs)
It can simultaneously be legal to have PinV sex and get married, yet still be illegal to give/receive a blow job or take nude pictures of your spouse.

Boualem Sansal's point is worth considering. It's common for immigrants to bring their culture with them. Refugees in Europe can claim to be fleeing war or poverty, but maybe they are trying to escape the results of bad governance.
Syria, Jordan, Somalia, Algeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, and of course Iran and Saudi Arabia: all have Islam as the official state religion within the first three articles of their constitutions. Further, they use the Quran as a source of jurisprudence.
>Syria: . . . ,; Islamic jurisprudence shall be a major source of legislation
>Somalia: No law can be enacted that is not compliant with the general principles and objectives of Shari’ah.
>Pakistan: . 227 Provisions relating to the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah: (1) All existing laws shall be brought in conformity with the Injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah, in this Part referred to as the Injunctions of Islam, and no law shall be enacted which is repugnant to such Injunctions.
Et al. To be fair, some do say that all religions shall be respected. For what that's worth.
For whatever historical reasons, Europeans have decided on a different path in governance. 500 million people now: all used to things like universal suffrage, an open intellectual climate and religious indifference.
Sansal's characterization of Germany's "welcoming" climate may be right. Germans know about war. And they can see how the Muslim nations live. Thinking they are going to change the hearts and minds of people who grew up under Islam is definitely a declaration of hope.

I totally made that up. She's read some articles.

Remember to worry about this, you little Muffins! In a world with grinding poverty, abject primitivism and punishing illiteracy, you kids can do everything you want to convince yourselves it's religious war we need to fear, as that (apparently) gratifies your need to be an old-time hero.
Lefties do that all the time, too. Abortion, women's rights, blacks, the disabled, whatever... They can never admit there's been any kind of progress at all, as that would require thinking about stuff.

Lenona, please speak more clearly.
What punishment should be inflicted on the wicked who defend "indefensible" opinions? On those who employ them? On those who continue to patronize their employers?
This "conviction by accusation" thingy just has no off button. Cotton Mather could explain better.

It's racist to try and change that cculture.

Exactly... Like that!
These people are arriving from the most primitive cultures of the planet. No understanding of logic, nutrition, feminism, due process, literacy, history or world events. And a third of 'em have fucking tuberculosis in their lungs.

"I guess when the rape of your daughter is statutory and the girl says she wants to marry him, you can still be friends in Idaho."
Non-starter. "Everyone" knows that this sort of thing only happens in Southern states. Nowhere else. Even if they're where you're iced/snowed in for months at a time...

But Crid, it's all the same. You said so yourself. They live sharia, they do sharia, whether they actually call it that or not. It's a primitive culture with primitive values. You can call it Islam or you can call it Ethyl Louise. It doesn't matter. It is what it is.
Look, we all know that the problem doesn't get fixed by re-writing the dogma, because the dogma is a trailing indicator; it gets re-written after people have changed their minds about how they are going to live. But because people generally tell you what they are if you listen close enough (took me a long time to realize that), you have to accept that the dogma reflects what they think now, or at least what they have thought in the recent past. To make any progress, we have to start making the argument why the Western way is better. Ignoring the problem won't make it go away.

I will, however, be gracious and mention something I should have also said at another thread:
It IS legal to sleep with consenting strangers. Provided, that is, they are not being paid for it and are not underage. No, it is not "too much wooorrrkkk" to find out the latter information. Parents of teens and preteens are never going to let that law change, so accept it. Any adult can lie and claim "he/she lied about his/her age" when the kid didn't actually give an age.
