The Worst Thing I Have Ever Seen On TV: Dr. Phil Exploiting A Mentally Ill Actress For Ratings, Continued Fame, Money
I just saw a clip from the show in a New York Post article, but I was horrified.
Horrible Dr Phil used an obviously mentally unwell actress for TV ratings fodder, under the guise of "helping" her.
She looks unwell, rattled on about things that weren't there, and was clearly someone who could not make rational decisions about whether to go on a TV show and expose herself to the world in this condition.
"There's a worrying disc inside me," she told Dr. Phil, 68, while pointing to her leg. "The man who's threatening me is the Sheriff of Nottingham."
If you find out a woman is in this condition -- which, believe me, they do through all the copious pre-interviewing they do on that show -- you use the power of the show and (if necessary) a few shekels of the money Dr. Phil surely has to get this woman help.
Some of my tweets before we left to go to a friend's house for dinner:
I also sent this to @Oprah:
@amyalkon
@Oprah Unsure if you have anything to do w Dr. Phil show still, but this is barbaric--doesn't seem to fit your ethos
Exploitainment has hit a new low I couldn't imagine was possible.

I have something of a crush on Shelley Duvall going back to the movie "Brewster McCloud" (shows you how old I am). To see her now breaks my heart. She is in obvious need of real help and instead this charlatan drags her in front of cameras to make money off her pain. I hope, dearly, that some good might come of this in that she gets the help she needs.

Stanley Kubrick picked on her during the filming of The Shining, driving her to nervous exhaustion, the state he wanted her in to play the character. Wonder if that had anything to do with her current state.

Y'all hear the one about Joni Mitchell's Morgellons? Cosh suggested in early days that the story floated by her people was deceptively cheerful, but I can't find a link... It was in his twitter feed, which is a fucking whitewater river of stuff. Her Wiki entry still seems somewhat obfuscatory.
Kids, do not lose your mind.
It would be bad.

Also, we shouldn't blame Kubrick. The girl was a starlet... From that realm, "nervous exhaustion" will translate into your life as "Man, I'll probably have a nice, cold brewski after I get home from work."
She was an actress acting, and the movie wasn't that great.

Dr. Phil, eh.
Years ago, I read a tale of the good doctor: A representative of his show called an author, asking questions about his recent book.
The author gained the impression he was to be invited to appear on the Dr. Phil Show.
The caller advised he would not be invited. On the Dr. Phil Show, she explained, "The expert is Dr. Phil. If you were invited, you would be the expert."

Dr. Phil, Oprah, and others like them are exploiters. period.
They, like so many on the left, claim that they are doing "good" but the reality is they exploit others (and usually those who are very vulnerable) for their own gain.
Oprah hit a new low when she went after that sales person in Switzerland, accusing her of bigotry, in order to gain publicity for her latest movie.
These people are so far removed from how others live they don't realize (or should I say "care"?) how others' lives are impacted by their actions.
