Coddled Little Campus Princes And Princesses Present Their List Of Demands to U of Maryland
There's little that reflects an obscene level of overprivilege as going to college and -- iinstead of studying -- focusing on demanding everything short of foot rubs and hourly cloth diaper service from the administration.
That's what (as the WaPo headline puts it) "minority students" at the University of Maryland are doing. They've issued 64 demands, including a demand for prayer rooms in every major building and shuttles to a Muslim center.
My suspicion -- in this case and others? Well, getting back to the opening line of this post, ask yourself what sort of person has the incredible opportunity of going to college in America in 2017 and puts their time into activism instead of learning?
Sure, it's a way to have unearned power over others -- if they can push administrations into meeting their demands.
Also, through their activism they can feel they are doing something -- something important, for a cause -- which means they have good reason to ignore their school work.
And maybe there's a reason for doing that -- such as the practice on many campuses of "diversity" admissions: admitting students who might be qualified for a lesser school but who are prioritized and admitted at a school they'd otherwise be nixed from simply because of the color of their skin or their background.
Law prof Gail Heriot goes into detail at at Heritage about how "race-preferential admissions policies hurt minority students" and actually make for "fewer African-American scientists, physicians, and engineers and likely fewer lawyers and college professors." (The whole piece is worth reading -- especially the part about Justice Mosk and the Bakke case.)
About the latest coalition of brats acting up on campus, Valerie Strauss story in the WaPo:
A coalition of 25 student organizations representing eight minority communities at the University of Maryland has presented a list of 64 demands to the administration. They include increased mental-health support and scholarships for marginalized students, as well as prayer rooms in every "major" building and shuttle service for Muslim students to a Muslim center. The coalition, called ProtectUMD, sent a letter with the demands to officials at the University of Maryland at College Park in late November and met with a group of them at President Wallace D. Loh's request, according to the Diamondback, the school's major independent student newspaper. The Diamondback recently published a special project explaining each specific demand as it relates to students, which you can see here. (A full list of the demands is below.)
...Among the 64 demands (which you can see in full below):
• Required diversity training for Greek organizations and groups recognized by the Student Government Association.
• An immediate response to hate speech or actions from university officials, including a consequence for the perpetrators.
• Penalties for groups that screen movies that "perpetuate false narratives and stereotypes" of Muslims.
• Acknowledgment during every campus event that "this is indigenous land," along with efforts to "officially recognize the tribe or nation whose land upon which the University of Maryland is built."
• One room in each major building designated for prayer.
• A full-time undocumented-student coordinator to advocate for, advise, represent and protect undocumented and "DACAmented students." (DACA is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which shields some undocumented immigrants from deportation.)
• A declaration of the College Park campus "as a sanctuary campus for undocumented and DACAmented students and their families."
• Converting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies Program into a department in order to provide curricular autonomy.
• University System of Maryland divestment from Maryland Correctional Enterprises, the prison industry arm of Maryland's Division of Corrections, as well as "student divestment from businesses and companies invested in MCE and the prison industrial complex."
• Shuttle service for students on the College Park campus to the Diyanet Center of America in Lanham for "Muslim students to have access to a place of worship and participate in the many activities that the center hosts."
So, forced speech, forced indoctrination, and special privileges for Muslim students? Got it.
Some of the others include: "The University employ more professors of color in all university departments."
So, we're going to be hiring people on the basis of their skin color rather than their merit. And outside of providing a few "of color"-ful faces to liven the place up, how is that fair to the students?
Also, how insulting to professors who are black who are smart, insightful, hard-working, and great at what they do -- and how awful that people must wonder whether they got where they are because somebody shoved a far more qualified Asian kid off of the college admissions ledge.
More: "Make free legal advice available for students participating in activism who face slander or other dishonest claims while exercising their rights to protest and free speech."
Oopsy! They forgot that they removed free speech in their other demands. Oh, right -- that's probably just the removal of free speech for Jews who support Israel and people who voted for Trump.

The Great Prophet of humanity, Bill Watterson, saw the prevailing trend that would lead to this mindset.
Largely in response to the social justice warrior mindset, Republicans enjoyed a sweeping victory in the last election, gaining the White House (with at least three Supreme Court justice picks), the House, the Senate and the majority of governorships in the states.
I find myself especially intrigued by the fourteenth item on the list of the University of Maryland's student coalition of special snowflakes' demands.
The terribly ironic part is that items six through eighteen on that list fall under the heading of "Accountability for hate speech or action."
They actually believe "hate speech" is a thing. This concept has never been defined by any court nor codified into U.S. law for the simple reason that what they call "hate speech" falls under the category of "free speech" in the U.S.
Hate speech is just for private organizations like YouTube and Facebook to censor those icky expressions of opinion that might make marginalized groups feel bad. Except white males. It's all right to try to make them feel bad.
But the social justice warriors do not believe in free speech and never did. On February 25 of last year, for instance, students at CSULA physically obstructed other students from attending a lecture given by conservative commentator, columnist and lawyer Ben Shapiro, who is actually an alumnus of that school.
On May 14, two Black Lives Matter activists at DePaul University deplatformed conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos. They blew whistles, stole microphones and actually threatened Yiannopolous. Security was on hand, which DePaul forced Yiannopoulos and Breitbart to pay for, but they refused to involve themselves.
To me, Milo Yiannopoulos is as repulsive (both physically and mentally) as any human being can get. But no one has a right to prevent him from speaking.
I don't really know what to do about all this, but since we have a conservative government now, I wrote to my Senator Marco Rubio and asked for legislation that would deny federal funding to any college or university that failed to take swift and decisive action against those students and faculty that acted to suppress free speech, meaning arrest and expulsion for the students and dismissal for the faculty.
I don't know what else there is to be done about this, but I'm open to suggestions.

"actually make for " fewer African-American scientists, physicians, and engineers and likely fewer lawyers and college professors." "
Of course, the elites who run such programs don't intend for African-Americans to become any of those things. They intend for African-Americans to become emotion-driven, race-resenting, reactionary political activists and government dependents. It's all about expanding the client classes. The people in those middle-class occupations? That's where political opposition comes from. Can't have that. Better to employ the Curley Effect at the academy, so they can nip that middle-class sort of thing in the bud.

Here is the answer that should be given to these snowflakes (and snowflakes at any college):
"As president of this esteemed University I want you all to know that my door is always open to help you transfer to an institution that better serves your needs."
Repeat as necessary.

One does not need a special room set aside for prayer, nor does one need a special bus to go to mosque. All one needs to know is which way Mecca lies, and one may pray the day away.

U of Maryland is a public institution. Prayer rooms are certainly contrary to the First Amendment, and thus a non-starter.
This sanctuary stuff will end soon enough, regardless of what the University does. My prediction is that they will cave, as soon as the Feds shut off the money spigot.
The public can decide if it wants to pay for the rest of this nonsense, or not. I'd lobby my representatives to cut funding to the University, but I don't live in Maryland.

MarkD, but you could lobby your Representatives to cut federal funding to all schools who subscribe to this garbage.

Not merely forbidding movies with "false narrative" about muslims, but punishment. This could include virtually any movie or TV show about the middle east or terrorists, including documentaries about 9/11, or Sniper, or Seal Team 6, or the documentary about the Olympics terror attack years ago (I have seen actual complaints about all of these from Muslims). Because THEY get to decide what is a false narrative.
What is "hate speech" and who gets to decide? Clearly one could no longer debate the wisdom of policies advocated by BLM, but according to these special snowflakes one also can't mention the word Trump because his very name is hate speech.
As for the rest, they are lobbying to increase their own tuition. Do they think the money for all this stuff comes from someone else?
