When Violence Against People You Disagree With Is Okay
If you accept (or worse, engage in) violence against the "other team," you are not for free speech or non-violence, you're just a selective thug.

Headline: Police Arrest Berkeley Professor Accused Of 'Bike Lock' Assault
Rob Shimshock writes at The Daily Caller:
Police arrested a former professor Wednesday who allegedly used a bike lock to assault a man at an April rally in Berkeley, Calif. After 4Chan identified Eric Clanton, a man who taught at Diablo Valley College in California, as the perpetrator behind an assault at an April 15 Trump rally, police placed him in custody, according to the East Bay Times. Authorities arrested Clanton due to suspicion concerning his use of a firearm in a felony and assault with a non-firearm lethal weapon.
Masked and clad in the black clothes of an anti-Trump antifascist, Clanton allegedly attacked at least one person with a bike lock, causing the victim to bleed profusely from the head.
While investigating Clanton, 4Chan users matched the former professor's facial structure, jeans brand, shoes and backpack straps to that of the assailant. Berkeley Police arrested Clanton over a month after 4Chan's evidence surfaced.
From later in the piece: He "taught ethics, philosophy and critical thinking..."
Right.
Max Kennerly, wryly:
@Popehat But the article doesn't describe the victim's political views. No way to tell if it's a felony or if it's totally awesome until we know.

If you taught at a community college, are you really a "professor?"
Diablo Valley College is a community college in Pleasant Hill, California, in the East Bay.
I used to live a few miles away from DVC. It was not known then as a hotbed of political activism, unlike its 4-year cousin to the north.

The truth is, these days, anybody with a Ph.D. who can get a job...
It's really tough out there.
Growing up and going to University of Michigan, I used to be a snob and think you weren't really somebody if you didn't have a job at an institution like that.
Now, young, talented researchers are working as dogwalkers -- or thereabouts.

Not in STEM, which pretty much explains the education bubble.
Can't get a job teaching engineering? Go work as an engineer. Unfortunately the same doesn't hold true for degrees in Philosophy.

If they're not doing research, are they really "researchers?" Or, are they underemployed dog walkers?
Conan the Grammarian at May 26, 2017 7:45 AM
FWIW, a friend who is earning his PhD in electrical engineering from UT(exas) taught at ITT Tech for a while. It paid significantly more than the graduate assistant gigs he was getting at the university. He liked his students.
Back to the topic: It is just so foreign to me that anyone thinks it's ok to hit someone on the head with a chunk of metal because of the way they vote. That someone is so self-righteous in their views that they justify attacking people. The ugliness of the political divide in our country is scary. I would be even more worried if I lived in certian dark blue cities (like Berkley, or LA.) And I'd be worried even if I leaned left polically- thuggery affects the whole community, and leftist revolutionary-types don't stop when they've won. They start purging their own ranks.

Actually it does, if you can find someone who employs philosophers.

Back in the day, half a century ago, I noted the campus left selected or recruited significantly fewer mesomorphs than our proportion in the campus would suggest.
Seems to be the same today.
Just sayin'
And maybe you shouldn't cause us to start thinking something like, "If it's okay for them....."

They're not underemployed, just overcredentialed.

I hired a few, for this thing in the mid-nineties... It was just after the divorce, and the freelance gigs were really starting to payoff, so I need a bunch of philosophers to help wi
Totally kidding. Never hired any philosophers.

How do you feel about violence against Dem Moozlims?
...The 1.575 billion non-violent ones, I mean.

"After 4Chan identified Eric Clanton,..."
4chan?
Reminds me of a story...
Porn icon Jenna Jameson was having trouble with a stalker, and not getting satisfaction from cops. A contact with Anonymous/4chan/oneofthoseshadowyorgs resulted in the reply, "Tits or GTFO", which made her mad, but after awhile, she relented and sent said pic. Immediately, she received a complete personal history and background check on the guy, and an assurance that his phones, computers and bank accounts had been disabled...
Fun to think about, innit?
Radwaste at May 27, 2017 5:24 AM
@Crid: No violence against the muslims, just stop importing them. And gtfo: leave their countries alone.
The US is responsible for an awful lot of the mess in the Middle East. We just can't stop meddling, selling them weapons (Trump continues this proud tradition), financing violent groups, overthrowing governments. Just one minor example among so many: We gave weapons and money to the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda at the same time we were hunting Bin Laden.
Frankly, it's no wonder they're pissed at the West. If you insist on repeatedly kicking a wasp nest, you will eventually get stung.
Stop importing muslims from pissed off regions, and leave the damned wasp nest alone. Simple.

It will be fun to see you, or some health-care-plus-retirement government employee of your dreams, asking immigrants at the border whether or not they're the "passed off" kind... and noting their response on a clipboard or Ipad.
For the record.

Pissed. Pissed off.

I'm so sick of politics at this point I can barely bring myself to surf the net anymore. I am irritated by those who refer to Trump as "Drumpf" and equally irritated by those who use the term "libtard."
I just can't be bothered anymore with listening to everyone bitch about whose team sucks more. Near as I can tell, they all suck.
On the other hand, bring up a problem - any problem - and I would LOVE to engage in a discussion about how said problem could be solved. Start by agreeing on a definition of the problem, illustrate with background about how the problem came to be, enumerate solutions and what obstacles those solutions would have to overcome. I love that kind of conversation. Instead I'm surrounded by noisy dullards bitching and moaning about Red pillers or Libtards or whoever they hate. Sod them all.
Oh, and in other news, Hi Crid! It's always good to see you out and about. Cheers.
