The Tennis Net Ceiling: Sex Differences In Physical Ability
If men and women played tennis together, it's unlikely there would be female champions, per John McEnroe.
I'm no tennis expert, but I would guess that this is true.
Those who are determined to deny that there are sex differences have a harder time when it comes to physical ability, because men, for example, have greater muscle mass and upper body strength.
Here's what McEnroe told NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro:
On calling Serena Williams the best female tennis player in the worldGarcia-Navarro: We're talking about male players but there is of course wonderful female players. Let's talk about Serena Williams. You say she is the best female player in the world in the book.
McEnroe: Best female player ever -- no question.
Garcia-Navarro: Some wouldn't qualify it, some would say she's the best player in the world. Why qualify it?
McEnroe: Oh! Uh, she's not, you mean, the best player in the world, period?
Garcia-Navarro: Yeah, the best tennis player in the world. You know, why say female player?
McEnroe: Well because if she was in, if she played the men's circuit she'd be like 700 in the world.
Garcia-Navarro: You think so?
McEnroe: Yeah. That doesn't mean I don't think Serena is an incredible player. I do, but the reality of what would happen would be I think something that perhaps it'd be a little higher, perhaps it'd be a little lower. And on a given day, Serena could beat some players. I believe because she's so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke 'cause she's been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, The U.S. Open, etc. But if she had to just play the circuit -- the men's circuit -- that would be an entirely different story.
Here's Serena herself, from the WaPo's Scott Allen:
The 35-year-old Williams, who is six months pregnant, was asked about the possibility of playing an exhibition match against Andy Murray during an appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman" four years ago."For me, men's tennis and women's tennis are completely, almost, two separate sports," Williams said. "If I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 in five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes. No, it's true. It's a completely different sport. The men are a lot faster and they serve harder, they hit harder, it's just a different game. I love to play women's tennis. I only want to play girls, because I don't want to be embarrassed."
I admire Serena Williams on a number of levels, and one of them is the level of no bullshit/straightforward honesty she reflects -- as in her remarks on how women should show some personal responsibility in whether they get blind drunk at parties.
This is what modern feminism needs -- some honesty about personal responsibility and sex differences in male/female achievement. Feminists, many of whom vigorously deny biology, contend that sex differences in achievement come out of discrimination.
The reality is, because men are "success objects" (as in, that's how they attract female mates and better female mates, at that), men have a vastly stronger motivation to invent things and claw their way to the top.

This inspired me to go look up the "Battle of the Sexes" matches from the 1970, when retired male pro and shameless self-promoter Bobby Riggs challenged female pros to a match. There were two played in 1973. The first was Riggs against Margaret Court, who was the #1 rated female player in the world at that time. Court had a better serve, but Riggs kept her off balance by changing speeds, and Riggs won fairly easily, 6-1, 6-2. At the time Riggs was 55 years old and Court was 30. Later that year, Riggs challenged 29-year-old Billie Jean King, who agreed to play a five-set match with Riggs. (Women's matches are usually three sets.) King had studied the tape of Riggs vs. Court and was prepared for Riggs' short game. She fell behind in the first set 2-4, but came back to win it 6-4, and then won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. There was a whole bunch of crowing about these two matches that really didn't amount to much, but the event was a shot in the arm for the popularity of women's tennis.
There was one other Battle of the Sexes singles match played in 1992, Jimmy Connors vs. Martina Navratilova. Both were former #1 rated players but were past their primes at the time of the match, Connors being 40 years old and Navratilova 35. Connors was handicapped by being allowed only one serve per point, and having to defend the doubles court (which is wider than the singles court). Despite these, he won 7-5, 6-2.

I was a swimmer. Guys on our JV team were better than college women with scholarships
I always love it when women say there are no differences between women and men, I hit them with the one two punch of Title IX for college sports scholarships and domestic violence

I grapple, and, whenever I meet a woman who denies that men have strength advantages and who thinks they can kick some guy's ass because they took a couple self-defense courses and do cross-fit, I always suggest they go to a grappling class (BJJ in my case) and challenge the biggest, dumbest white belt there. They WILL lose.
Heck, I've been at this four years and sometimes I'll lose to the biggest, dumbest white belt there when I miscalculate something and get caught in a bad position. Size and strength matter and it's why sports like this have gender and weight classes in competition. Plenty of women can best men bigger than them, but it's because they've become damn-near perfect. Whereas men can best pretty much any women WITHOUT being nearly perfect.
Some guys are even dumb enough to deny that they have a strength advantage and that it's "all about technique." Then I laugh and say, "OK, go to the zoo and challenge the largest male gorilla and try your technique on it."

This is a dangerous dangerous state of mind. If you are a woman, your best defense against a man is to never let him get close enough to get his hands on you. No ju jitsu, no karate, no mixed martial arts, no knife is going to save you from any healthy man over the age of about 13.
I know several women who believe this technique garbage and most of them should know better.
In short, buy a gun and learn how to use it.
On the subject or tennis, you will find that Serena William's hitting partners, are good middle of the road NCAA men's players. They need to be good enough to beat her playing a tactical game (like women do). But no so good, they overwhelm her with power like any man ranked n the top thousand would.
Personally I think McEnroe was being quite generous with the 700th comment.

I've never really understood the propaganda about men and women having the same physical abilities. It's clearly not the case. And by saying it is, are you not hinting that in order to be considered an equal person to a man, a woman must also be physically equal? And if you are saying that, is a shorter, smaller man therefore less than a larger man?

This is one of the reasons the Gender Critical feminists get so upset about the whole "treat everyone how they identify" thing... males are now allowed to compete as females in school sports, and are winning many of those scholarships and championships.

Which is exactly why I don't take BJJ for self-defense, and neither do most women I train with. I do it for the love of the sport. It's a hobby. It's like human-chess and fantastic exercise (mental and physical).
And that's what I tell EVERYONE who says they want to take it for self-defense. Women who take it for self-defense quit within months because they're getting beaten by every guy in class and figure "What's the point?" But if their goal for joining is, "Because it's fun and a challenge and it's good exercise and I want to compete," they actually last.
My coach has frequently been asked, "Are martial arts good for self-defense?" and his answer is, IF you are without a weapon or can't get to it in time ANd your attacker is unarmed, isn't much bigger than you, and is really stupid/drunk, AND you manage to get the element of surprise by reacting quickly enough AND you've been training for many years, full-contact sparring experience (BJJ, Krav) may give you the right mindset to successfully escape and not panick. That can account for a lot or very little, depending on the situation. You're better off trying to avoid danger and never get into the situation where you're trying to fight off an attacker.

A "female". What's that?
Too funny that men will turn out to be the best "females" at everything but baby makin' and feedin'.
Solves our "women" in combat situation neatly.

As more women's sports are opened up to transgender women, the gap between the abilities of male and "female" athletes will become narrower, and maybe even disappear in some sports.
Female athletes who were born with dicks will set new records and raise the bar in women's sports, kind of the way a pit bull with feathers would raise the bar in cock fighting. The current best female athletes will become mediocre, or just pulp in sports like martial arts, but those with feminist sentiments will at least be able to feel proud that women are finally proving themselves equal to men in sports.
Transgender athletes are still very uncommon, probably not enough of them to completely dominate any women's sports or teams, so cis-women will still take a lot of 2nd and 3rd place and runner-up awards.

Over the years, I wanted to emphasize to my 3 girls as they were young ladies not to get over confident about this "equality" thing in terms of safety, so I told them to put their hands together in front of them. Then I grabbed their 2 wrists with one hand and they could not get free. An average man over 60 could hold them with 1 hand easily--it wasn't even a contest. I have also had women hit me or try to and it is comical. Without a frying pan or knife a woman simply can't hurt a man (most women).
But so what--that is not how we should be judging people except in combat. The problem is this insistence on men and women being identical. They aren't.
cc at June 26, 2017 3:13 PM
Now now. We all know how this will shake out. There will be women only divisions and man/woman divisions. Because men playing with only men is discriminatory but women playing with only women is affirming or some such bs.
And both have to get the same funding. Because otherwise you are a meanies head. The fact that there is so much more demand for sports from men is irrelevant.
Ben at June 26, 2017 4:06 PM
We currently have three leagues for most sports: men's, women's, and disabled. The problem we have is that it is unclear where to place intersexuals, transgenders, etc. People with testosterone abnormalities (whether natural or by choice) have no business in the women's league.
Seems to me there are two solutions:
- Stay with three leagues, but change the men's league to "open". The open league is home to all men, as well as intersexuals, transgenders, etc..
- Four leagues: Men's, women's, disabled, and "open". Since the "open" league will include people with hormone abnormalities and people on intentional hormone treatment, it could even be declared as the league with no drug restrictions.
Regardless of the solution, it is essential to restrict women's to biological women without hormone disorders. Anything else is grossly unfair.

I would say without VOLUNTARY hormone alteration.
I find it amazing we live in a world where female athlete get banned for taking a medication for a medical condition for years before sports league decide to ban it, but at the same time people calming to be trans (either way) can compete in womens sports while taking steroids that have been banned for decades
lujlp at June 27, 2017 5:00 PM
No can do, amigo. The whole impetus behind non-binary gender identity is not about biology, it's about feelings. And if you tell a "woman" that she cannot play in the women's league because she's really not a woman, it will hurt her feelings.

Well Justine Henin bulked up through heavy duty weight training and then trimmed back down. She said it didnt help her tennis, and actually made her more injury prone.
Im going to give Serena the benefit of the doubt here, I think after long term steroid abuse she would most likely have difficulty getting pregnant, and she is now seven months along, I believe.
Lots of reasons for avoiding the crazy ITF drug tests. Could be she just went to one of those good parties in LA the night before.
She is an incredible tennis player, just not as good as most men, unlike someone like Ruby Fox or Margaret Murdock who have competed and won sucessfully against men in a sport less dependent on speed and strength.

It's all about feelings.
He "feels" like a boy and should be treated as one in all things, just like a normal boy. And if he wishes hard enough, and Jiminy Cricket isn't too drunk that day, he'll become one, magically. And those meanies on the school administration will see just how normal a boy he is.
And the first day he's sexually assaulted in the boys' bathroom, he'll sue the school, the school board, and anyone else he can find, 'cause they didn't provide extra security for his use of the boys' bathroom.
Sorry, son, you're not a boy. And all the wishing in the world won't make it so. And some of the other boys aren't going to understand that. And they'll do mean things to you out of their own ignorance, and yours.
There's a reason we segregate girls and boys, especially at that age.

New information here, many years later...
FloJo is still the women's record-holder in track.
Seventy-six high-school boys were as fast or faster in 2019.
Make no mistake, though - there is no shame in that. Being the best there is in your field does NOT mean you are to be disregarded because you're not the best in every field.
