War And Commerce
Still finishing my book, and I just slept for seven hours (from about 5 to midnight), despite all the small bombs people have been setting off all evening.
I'll post more in the morning, but here's one for now:
My Uber driver from Jordan tonight on the way home told me, wisely, that commerce is the opposite of war.

That Uber driver has never met a Ferengi, or the Rules of Acquisition.

It's just in one you sell stem bolts, and in the other you sell exploding stem bolts.

By all means, since the "competent" and "adult" presidents, along with the "adult" Secretaries of State who wanted to be president, successively kicked the North Korea can down the road, let's heap all the blame, along with all the contempt and derision we can muster, onto the president into whose lap the problem has now fallen.
It might be time to clear out that old fallout shelter in the backyard and practice your desk drills. After all, the last "adult" president gave Iran room and money to develop its nuclear missile capabilities, too.

The trans-mafia strikes. Apparently, one's sexuality isn't fluid enough to detransition.

Oh, about 50-some-million voters who thought the alternative was far worse, I suppose. Why do you ask?

Reversion to sarcasm is noted on the ledger, boys.

Coney, your larger concern is BAKED RIGHT INTO Mead's tiny essay... That's probably why it came to mind for you. So, like, your point was already answered wild mine remains unaddressed: *This* president is not to be trusted handling matters of such grave concern. He can't vanish from this one in a fog of lawsuits. Accordingly, I am grateful that the assignment of this responsibility to him is not my fault. I sleep well at night. No matter how desperate the hour, you apparently are going to want to feel personally aggrieved on this guy's behalf: "heap all the blame."

Why would you suppose such a thing? He defeated Hillary, one of the weakest candidates in history. Why can't you give her credit for her wretchedness? The meaning of this election is bigger than this loathsome little man.
To attach yourselves to him in personal affection is really, really weird behavior. How desperate are you to take a defensive, wounded posture? The meaning of his election is not about him.

Cool beans Gog. I didn't know you personally knew the president. Invite me along some time.

I thought I was! In any case, the die-hard Trump fans are (to me) as silly as the die-hard Hillary or die-hard Bernie fans. They're just politicians.
You have to pick the one you're least disgusted with, not worship the shmoe(s) -- and I THINK that's what you're saying, too.
If we know Trump is only the lesser of two weevils, can't we just laugh at his silly tweets and the media's insane hysteria and watch out for REALLY BAD CRAP instead?
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at July 6, 2017 4:39 PM
To be honest, I don't think any president would be up to handling the mess that has been dumped in Trump's lap.
We have a military exhausted by 12 years of near constant warfare, a depleted stock of weapons, and an intransigent dictator hellbent on causing an international incident and possibly sparking a global war.
I'm not personally aggrieved on anyone's behalf.
I just think chastising Trump for the situation ignores the reality of the can kicking that has been going on regarding North Korea for the past 60+ years.
Conan the Grammarian at July 6, 2017 8:59 PM
No no no Gog. Crid is a die-hard unTrump fan. That is why he comes off as so silly. He doesn't want Hillary. He doesn't want Trump. And he really doesn't want to accept that those were the only two options. Oh well.
