Think gun violence is only a recent problem in America? Think again.

Per Conan's link:
The Mohawks were the first group to take advantage of the opportunity. Within a decade of the Dutch establishment of Fort Orange (Albany) in 1626, right on the Mohawks’ doorstep, the tribe had an arsenal of 400 muskets and plenty of ammunition. As a whole, the Iroquois League possessed at least twice as many guns. The Mohawks and members of the Iroquis League used this weaponry to wipe out rivals in the fur trade and seize their people as captives. The Hurons, Eries, Susquehannocks and many others in the Great Lakes and Ohio country met this unfortunate end.
Whoops! There goes the Noble Savage Stereotype.

From Conan's linke:
European technological superiority, particularly in terms of guns, cannot serve as a blanket explanation for Euro-Americans’ ultimate triumph over Native North Americans. In early Quebec, Jamestown and Plymouth, colonists held an advantage in firearms only for a handful of years before Native people began building their own arsenals. The founders of later colonies, such as Pennsylvania or Georgia, arrived to find indigenous people already furnished with the best gun technology Europe could produce and keen to acquire more. Except under the rarest circumstances, no one state authority had the ability to choke Indians off from guns, powder and shot.
All true, but I would say that in the heavily forested eastern coasts, that was the native's downfall. A bow is quiet, and does not mark your position with a blast of sound and smoke, has a higher rate of fire than muskets, and in skilled hands quite deadly. Combined with asymmetrical warfare, they could have at least slowed the immigrants move west.
There goes the Noble Savage Stereotype.
Anyone still using that old chestnut should be asked a simple question: had did the Sioux become a plains tribe? they didn't start out that way. Or explain the rules of lacrosse as played between tribes.
Under current law, it is illegal to shampoo hair for people outside one’s family without a cosmetology licence – which requires 1,500 hours of training or a two-year apprenticeship, $200 in fees and passing an exam. Many people across Michigan have been fined and punished for shampooing hair without a cosmetology license. For perspective, the Federal Aviation Authority requires the same number of hours for airline pilots (up from 250 prior to 2014).
Now, even if you're feeling like you've been exposed as an adoring 7th-grade puppydog in Ms. Helms after-lunch Social Studies class, you should try to press on through the shame. I mean, this has happened on this blog before.
What are your dreams like on the night after one of these?

The Comanche were able to make West Texas / Northern Mexico uninhabitable for white people using only bows and arrows for decades. Until the advent of the repeating rifle, the Comanches were able to drive off white settlers from Mexico and Texas who were armed with single-shot muzzle-loading flintlock weapons.
Bows and arrows were quite deadly, but absent modern steel broad heads, a stone arrowhead did not carry the fast killing power that a .75 caliber musket ball did.
Even modern broad head arrows fired from a modern compound bow are slower killers. A bow-hunting acquaintance of mine explained that you shoot the deer in the soft tissue with a razor-sharp five-point broad head that he barely feels and then follow the trail of blood as the deer bleeds out.
So, the wound track and shock wave generated by the firearms of the colonial days had value to the Native American tribes, despite the slow-reload time and smoke. As the article points out, you could use a firearm to kill an enemy hiding in the brush, but an arrow would be deflected.
As for marking your position, the article points out that the natives used the weapons for close-range combat, firing one shot and then launching a swarm attack with hand weapons (axes, tomahawks, knives, etc.).
A smooth-bore musket only had an effective range of less than 100 yards. Even the British infantry only used their famed Brown Bess muskets to fire 2-3 volleys and then attacked with bayonets, a weapon with which the British infantry was particularly deadly and widely feared.
A rifled flintlock in those days had a range of up to 300 yards, but could take over a minute to reload, whereas a musket in experienced hands took about 20 seconds to reload. Later, pre-prepared paper cartridges would cut that time down.
The bow and arrow have definite advantages as killing tools but, despite faster reload times and better accuracy, there is a reason they were supplanted as weapons of war by matchlocks, wheellocks, and eventually flintlocks. Native Americans recognized the advantage gunpowder had over human muscle in propelling a projectile at an enemy and quickly adopted the new weapons.
Native Americans adapted faster than most natives to then-modern technology. In the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War, the Zulu captured Martini rifles and turned them on their enemies. However, accustomed to muscle-powered projectiles like spears, they aimed high to account for gravity, often overshooting their intended targets as a result. The Zulu never adapted their famous Buffalo Horns tactics for modern warfare and weaponry, eventually losing to the heavily outnumbered British.

The Native Americans also did not have the woodworking skills of the Medieval English. So, they were not using anything comparable to the famed English longbow with its legendary range and killing power.

Will there even be a Trump library?
Can any fucker anywhere pretend he read a book in these years/decades?
How about a Trump Presidential Android, maybe circa Samsung Note 7? It wouldn't take up much space, and would be memetically self-immolating.
Crid at March 29, 2018 3:11 PM
Obama made his "library" a "community center" complete with a basketball court.
In keeping with that theme, perhaps Trump's "library" will be an amusement park and arcade.
Perhaps community centers and arcades are all we want of presidential libraries today - perhaps what we deserve.
