On July 4, 1976, Israeli commandoes rescued 102 hostages being held by the PFLP-EO in the old terminal building at the airport in Entebbe, Uganda.

The rescue mission took place almost 2,000 miles from Israel. The Israelis lacked the logistical means to operate at that range and had to improvise to carry out the operation.

The IDF was expecting to be able to get only about half the hostages out alive. Instead, they rescued all but four. Three were killed in the crossfire and the fourth, Dora Bloch, was later beaten to death by Ugandan soldiers at a Kampala hospital in retaliation - on Idi Amin's orders.

Casualties among the rescue forces were expected to be high as well. However, only one Israeli soldier was killed in the operation, Yonatan Netanyahu, older brother of the current Prime Minister of Israel.
