Believe -- In Due Process
An Ohio woman falsely accused the Parma Heights police chief of rape, investigators say. Lucky for him, there was video on the of him at a bowling alley and elsewhere on the night she claimed he assaulted her.
Cory Shaffer writes at Cleveland.com:
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A 41-year-old woman faces felony charges after she admitted to investigators that she fabricated a rape allegation against Parma Heights Police Chief Steve Scharschmidt, according to officials.Sylvia Davis of Brooklyn came clean about her allegations after state agents confronted her with multiple inconsistencies in her story as well as cellphone records that showed Google searches that included the phrase "can you go to jail for lying about a cop raping you," prosecutors said.
A grand jury handed up an 11-count indictment Thursday charging Davis with extortion, intimidation, tampering with evidence and tampering with records.
...Scharschmidt told investigators that he went to Yorktown Lanes on the night that Davis said the assault occurred. He said his mother fell down and hurt herself, and he and other family members took her to a hospital to get checked out, where they spent much of the evening.
Surveillance video backed up his story, prosecutors said.

Ah. So you have to be a police chief of a DA to have such an accuser charged. At least now we know what the rules are.

Pretty good alibi. Prosecutors like Mike Nifong have been know to ignore alibis.
But I thought women never lie?

She should have said it happened in high school, 30+ years ago.
Character assassination is so much simpler than proving an actual crime.

Good point. Then it would have been her word against his. It would have been a lot harder or impossible for him to prove his innocence. He probably wouldn't have been prosecuted, but if the mayor and city council are Democrats she might have at least been able to cause him to lose his job.

Typo.

Regrettably, that has become the standard. I remind people that we have "innocent until proven guilty," but the counter argument I get is "that only applies to the court system."
In other words, it's perfectly fine, right and proper to ruin someone's life over an accusation that can't be proven. You just can't charge them with a crime.

The chief of police in Bellevue, Washington (large suburb of Seattle) was also falsely accused of rape, and eventually cleared.
