They did it with John McCain too, through his funeral and its endless sequels. “If only the Republican Party were dominated by a Republican like [Insert Name of Dead Republican Here] instead of that awful, awful Trump!” they sobbed as they shed their crock-adile tears, because it was a crock. There’s never going to be a Republican with a pulse who is not Der Führer reborn. Not McCain. Not Mitt. Not Bush 1.0 or 2.0. And Jeb!, had he become 3.0, would have been Hitler too.
I am certain that, at some time in the future, President Xi and I, together with President Putin of Russia, will start talking about a meaningful halt to what has become a major and uncontrollable Arms Race. The U.S. spent 716 Billion Dollars this year. Crazy!

I knew the stories but hadn't put it together... Three presidents with Pacific service. ~ Crid at December 4, 2018 9:20 AM
If you're counting presidents with Pacific service, you should consider:
Lyndon Baines Johnson - While serving as a US Representative in Congress, Johnson was called to active duty in the Naval Reserve. After a year spent inspecting shipyards, he was sent to the Southwest Pacific as an observer and political ally by Franklin Roosevelt, Johnson rode as an observer in a B-26 on a bombing mission to New Guinea. The plane, according to Johnson's later medal citation, "developed mechanical trouble and was forced to turn back alone, presenting a favorable target to the enemy fighters." Johnson with his movie camera was able to "obtain and return with valuable information." Douglas MacArthur recommended Johnson for the Silver Star, citing his "marked coolness in spite of the hazards involved." Johnson was the only member of the crew to be recommended for and awarded a medal for that mission.
Richard Milhous Nixon: Nixon could have received draft deferments for his government job or for being a lifelong Quaker, but rejected that route, applying for and receiving a commission in the US Naval Reserve. After a year of stateside duty in Iowa, Nixon requested sea duty and was assigned a role supporting logistics operations in the Southwest Pacific.
Gerald Rudolph Ford: Gerald Ford served as an assistant navigation officer on the USS Monterey (CVL-26) in the Pacific theater through several combat actions. Ford was almost washed overboard in the Halsey typhoon of December 1944, recovering his footing at the last minute and rolling onto a catwalk.

Didn't know about Ford & LBJ! ~ Crid at December 5, 2018 12:06 AM
LBJ's medal is often portrayed as a political move by MacArthur. In exchange for lobbying FDR to provide more funding for MacArthur's command (the Southwest Pacific), LBJ was nominated by MacArthur for the nation's third-highest combat medal.
In 1964, The New York Timesreported the incident in somewhat more sympathetic terms.
