Something similar was addressed on an episode of Babylon 5 : a boy was denied a simple operation to save his life because the religion of his family insisted that only draft animals could undergo such a procedure. The doctor operated anyway. The boy would be completely well. The family killed him.
Good ol' religion!

But I wonder what I got as a vaccine back in the day. I suspect the area may not have to use this particular vaccine.

Religion is often used as a shield for things people just don't want to do; or used as cover for things they really want to do. Remember, American slavery was both defended and vilified on the basis of religion.

Often, culture is cited as religion - e.g., female genital mutilation, the very name of which says "evil practice" - and handed down as such. Islam has a fair amount of Arabic tribal traditions that fundamentalist Muslims cite as religious rites. ISIS cites many cherry-picked hadiths (not found the Quran) as justification for their doctrine.

And, since Hassan codified the religion 1,500 years ago, Islamic rites and doctrine never evolved. There was no Protestant Reformation or Vatican II in Islam.
