Enjoyed this article the first time I read it. I had forgotten about it. Ostensibly a humor magazine, Spy had some insightful acorns hidden in its oak forest.

Reading this gives one perspective on the Baby Boomers raising their Millennial offspring as pals rather than as parents. And gives one insight into why we are on our second generation of adult-children. It's a vicious cycle, and we need to get out of it. This world needs the grown ups to be in charge.

Exactly. And it will find them, inevitably… But because the popular mind has no appreciation of stoicism or rigor, we are really, really not going to like the ones who get the gig. They'll be disinterested in things we (presently, perhaps momentarily) enjoy tremendously, such as self-determination, free thinking and broad literacy.

In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king, and in the land of children the adult is running the playground.

I wasn't really referring to some benevolent dictator coming along and taking charge. I was referring to the need for our society to become less juvenile.

We need to get away from man-children (of either sex) being in charge of our arts, culture, etc. We don't need more movies about thirty- or forty-year-old adults behaving like drunken teenagers on a weekend bender. We don't need another JJ Abrams adaptation of a formerly-adult franchise, turning it into teenaged fantasies in which characters become starship captains despite barely being out of the academy that teaches them to be starship crewmen. We don't need more feces-laden "art" reminiscent of a toddler showing off his first big-kid poo to everyone in the room, the artist valuing shock as much or more than genuine appreciation.

We need the adults to exercise their self-determination and elect politicians interesting in governing, not political posturing - and then hold them accountable.
