A little wiped out from my writing day!
My document with my next book and columns crashed and wouldn't come back up. I have backups, but I didn't want to lose even a little of today's work -- plus I need my doc to open.
Luckily, the program is Scrivener, greatest writing program, and only $49 (with 30 days free trial), plus they have been super to me when I've had the rare emergency. Rare because it's great fucking software.
Between the generosity of the Scrivener folks, who tweeted me a potential solution, and Gregg, who talked me through the next steps, all is well. However, the stress reduced my cognitive ability to around that of a houseplant.
So...
You pick the topics.

So, who thinks Boris Johnson will pull through?
NicoleK at April 6, 2020 11:16 PM
Interesting how while thousands die from COVID-19, deaths from other causes have gone way down. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the federal government agreed to pay all costs related to COVID-19; so hospitals, insurance companies, public health agencies, state governments are attributing everything they can to COVID-19. Makes me wonder if what we're being told is accurate, or a lot of people making sure that a crisis is not going to waste.

Unfortunately, Boris Johnson has children, so if he doesn't survive, he will not qualify for a Darwin Award.
He thumbed his nose at COVID-19; there is a price to pay for such rank stupidity. I would cut him some sympathy if he caught an illness virtually no one knew existed, a la Freddie Mercury. But he was openly contemptuous of the very simple safety protocols that were in place. Unless he went around with his fingers in his ears for the last four months, going "La-la-la-la-la-la-la!", he knew perfectly well what to do. And he didn't do it.
Stupid is as stupid does. And given how contagious COVID-19 is, why hasn't he been charged with a crime, for willfully spreading this disease?

Based on computer models, experts at IHME predicted 50,962 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in New York on April 1st.
Two weeks ago:
Governor Cuomo: "I need 30,000 ventilators now!"
Trump: "They don't need 30,000 ventilators." Sends 4,000.
Cuomo: "Four thousand ventilators? You pick the 26,000 people who are going to die!"
Washington State sends 400. Oregon sends 140. Maybe 1,000 sent from China (hope they work)
Media: Trump, most evil man in the world, abandons New York, doesn't care that tens of thousands will die.
This week:
Actual number of hospitalized patients in New York on April 1st: 18,368.
There was a decline in the number of hospital admissions for COVID-19 during the past few days. This is good news. Hopefully it keeps going this way (hospital admissions have been declining in Washington for about two weeks)
Cuomo: "We don't need any additional ventilators right now. There is no hospital that needs ventilators that doesn’t have ventilators, there is no hospital that needs PPE that doesn’t have it in the state system.”
You can't blame Governor Cuomo for his anxiety, or his frustration two weeks ago with Trump. He was reacting reasonably to the expert's predictions based on their models. Trump was reacting reasonably to different expert's predictions.
Dr. Fauci: “I’ve looked at all the models. I’ve spent a lot of time on the models. They don’t tell you anything. You can’t really rely upon models.”

So, who thinks Boris Johnson will pull through?
Depends. If his physician prescribes hydroxychloroquine + zinc + zpac, he should be fine, minus whatever underlying conditions. Whilst the plural of anecdote is not data, there's way too much information pointing towards that combination's effectiveness to dismiss it out of hand.
Not Invented Here is not particularly scientific, either.

Who thinks the grave dancing if he does die will be especially ugly?
Rest of the country: "Didn't you learn any lessons from Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the massive blackout of 1977, the Great Northeastern Blackout of 2003, and Hurricane Irene in 2011? You've been governor since 2011."
New York's chronic financial mismanagement has left it inadequately prepared for an emergency. According to one news source, "...emergency room shortages have long plagued the state's healthcare system." Cuomo declined an opportunity to purchase 16,000 ventilators in 2015. Although, to be fair, that's probably not all on Cuomo. New York's legislature is not exactly a model of honesty and probity.
Shiny new projects get politicians elected and re-elected. Stocking the larder does not. So, politicians have a habit of deferring long-term maintenance projects for the next guy to handle. The problem for Cuomo is that he is his own "next guy."

Can we get this chiseled into the entrances to the New York legislature buildings and the governor's mansion?
Hold, wait. That's overly punitive. Let's engrave that on the legislative bodies of all 50 states, DC and the various commonwealth regions. Perhaps make that part of the oath of office? applicable to all levels of government.

Imagine the response of conservatives -- and probably many libertarians as well -- if Obama had been assassinated.
Or if Hillary had been elected and then assassinated.

More on what Germany - and South Korea - are doing right:
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/04/world/europe/germany-coronavirus-death-rate.html
Elsewhere, it was said that the high number of nurses in Germany could be one of the biggest factors in their success rate.
Btw, Germany has well over four times the OVERALL population than that of the Netherlands - but right now, the former has had only 1900 deaths and the latter has had 2100!
(Belgium has had 2000.)

While rambling around YouTube last weekend, I came across a clip of Jerry Seinfeld, Norm Macdonald, and another guy who's Jewish (who I believe is also a comedian.)
Jerry told Norm that he had the "greatest Jew joke...that I love" and said to Norm, "and you're not gonna get it...that's the joke."
So Jerry told the joke:
The third guy immediately started chuckling, while Norm looked baffled (he either truly didn't get the joke, or was playing the part.)It took me a second or two, but I got it.

“Btw, Germany has well over four times the OVERALL population than that of the Netherlands - but right now, the former has had only 1900 deaths and the latter has had 2100!”
You assume, incorrectly I believe, that Germany is doing something different care wise, or vector control wise, when in reality they are counting differently.
Germany only counts corona virus deaths when there are not other overwhelming comorbidity factors. So if you die of heart disease or cancer in Germany while infected with Corona virus, cancer or hearth disease is listed as the cause of death.
There is great suspicion that New York is doing the same thing, because the feds are picking up some of the costs of care for corona virus patients.

Heh, I showed my kid something similar five minutes before showing her the quick way to do it.
I gave her a problem like 65*7, or something, and first taught her 7(60+5) is 7*60+7*5, and had her do ten problems, then I showed her the short cut.
The reason is I want her to get the why of it, not just memorize how to do it. It took like twenty minutes.

Deer lord, no.
He would have been elevated to sainthood at the very least, if not straight up godhood. Do not make martyrs out of those you oppose politically. I believe there is an English king who has some experience with this.
It's much better that he exited office, and lived long enough to see all his signature accomplishments reduced to ash. That it took less than 4 years is simply a bonus.
No sainthood, no godhood. Just ash.

Isab, it would help if you'd provide a link - AND prove that the Netherlands and Belgium count differently than Germany.
As my Czech friend pointed out, it's not as though the Dutch are known for the love of discipline that Germans are, so the latter patients just might be following all the orders they get from their medical and governmental superiors and thus saving their own lives, even when already infected.
