CNN this week published a report copying almost word-for-word a Chinese Communist Party press release praising the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s efforts to contain the coronavirus and degrading the U.S. Navy’s failures to do likewise.

Almost as bad as CNN's promotion of Chinese propaganda is the network's defense of its decision to run state-sponsored agitprop.

Michigan two-fer.

Citing concerns over violating civil liberties, sheriffs Mike Borkovich, Ted Schendel, Ken Falk, and Kim Cole who protect counties along Lake Michigan in the northwest part of the mitten said in a joint statement that the governor “has created a vague framework of emergency laws that only confuse Michigan citizens.”

“As a result, we will not have strict enforcement of these orders,” the sheriffs said. “We will deal with every case as an individual situation and apply common sense in assessing the apparent violation… We believe that we are the last line of defense in protecting your civil liberties.”

Operation Grid Lock looked pretty succesful.

The operation, organized by the Michigan Conservative Coalition (MCC), directed protesters to stay in their cars and circle the capitol, honking their horns. Live shots on Fox News showed thousands of cars stacked up around the statehouse. Some protesters sported signs that said, “tyranny worse than the virus” and “honk if you love liberty.”

Initial unemployment claims numbers for last week are out, 5.2 million. That takes us to +20 million people lost their jobs over the last four weeks, or a 13% raise in unemployment. The total unemployment rate should be around 17%.

On the bright side 5.2 million is under 6 million from the week before. But it is still too close to the saturation point to tell if things are getting better.

Taking selfies with wild animals is really, really dumb.

This the third time that the Indian state of Odisha has seen a seflie-related fatality in just five months.

A 50-year-old man was crushed to by a wild bull elephant's trunk while trying pose for a photo with the animal last December. That same month, another man was trampled to death by an elephant after sneaking into the Khamar forest range to snap selfies.

That bear story reminds me of another one. A guy got his leg ripped off by a nurse shark. After getting patched up (as well as they could) he was getting interviewed by police and park services. The fellow originally tried to claim the shark came out of nowhere and just ripped his leg off. After a little bit of prodding and being told just how unlikely that was he admitted he was sitting on the shark trying to get a picture of him riding it like a cowboy.
