One thing I see so often in the work I do, volunteering as a mediator (for LA residents w/disputes who want to avoid expense & hell of court) is how damn frequently people (wrongly) assume the worst motives behind others' actions. Maybe don't start from the "people are shit" POV?

I beg to differ. Anyone who calls Trump supporters Nazis or racists *is* shit. Because everyone knows better, whether they'll admit it or not.

At some point masks and gloves will become cargo cult status symbols: they're used by people who are simply trying to emulate the "experts". Because Science!
I'm guessing masks are more beneficial. Gloves I see as providing a false sense of security. Unless you're changing gloves on regular basis, they'll be just as dirty as your otherwise unwashed hands.
But I'd like to see the scientific studies into the effectiveness of masks, gloves, and social distancing. Why 6 feet? I've seen at least one learned person say that was a made up number. I've seen one of Amy's retweets say that the proper space is 20 feet outside and 27 feet inside.
Has anyone looked at central air as a contributing factor to spreading viruses?

Surprised they're not calling for an armed SWAT team.
I used to live in a high-end condo. Jane Pauley owned one of the apartments, and Hulk Hogan's mansion was right next door (I think his ex-wife still lives there). A more petty class of individuals you will never find.

Sorry, but from Brad Edwards' tweet it is OBVIOUS he's s#!t. He has self-identified for our convenience.

I got side tracked, but this did cross my mind. Perhaps "Meal Team 6" will be sent out. In case you missed it:

Meal Team 6 will insure all the evidence "disappears". If Hoffman Estates doesn't send out an MRAP, I'll be disappointed.

Yes.
I'm guessing masks are more beneficial.
Masks (except for the special N95 ones worn by medical people) don't do much to keep you from picking up other people's viruses in the air. They do help keep your own viruses from getting to others. They also help keep you from touching your own face by mistake.

It's not just the nouveau riche who tend toward petty.
When I was living in the Bay Area, I lived in a townhouse complex. The neighborhood was being gentrified, having started out as working class housing, but invaded by the middle class as housing prices in nearby towns were rising exponentially.
With concerns about rising porch piracy and vehicle break-ins (thanks to Prop 47), the HOA set up a meeting to discuss creating a neighborhood watch and invited the local police. An officer came and presented simple security household measures, talked about crime trends in our area, and then opened the discussion to questions.
People started immediately asking how to enforce parking rules on the neighbors, one of whom was singled out by several people. The perpetrator was a contractor and drove a work truck larger than his driveway, so it stuck out over the sidewalk. You'd have thought he was clubbing baby seals on the driveway, the venom and vicious hatred that was directed his way - all because he couldn't fit his truck in the driveway or in his garage. His house was on the route of my evening walk, so I knew the house. I simply walked around the truck, as these folks could have. They wanted him fined. One person even asked about having him arrested.
The officer tried, but finally gave up, explaining that the town's police force was small and, with rising drugs, homelessness, and porch piracy, overworked already; that ticketing hardworking folks for parking violations in their own driveways was a waste of police resources, not to mention a rather petty concern. Needless to say, with the failure to turn the local police into an enforcement arm of the HOA, the neighborhood watch idea fizzled out and the busybodies went back to citing non-comforming paint jobs and overgrown lawns.

How miserable is a person's life who needs to monitor and whine about trivial things that don't effect them or their quality of life? Do they feel that this gives their lives meaning perhaps.
Jay at May 9, 2020 9:27 AM
911 for an ice cream truck?? I hope every idiot that does that gets fined for wasting police time.

An ice cream truck in Hoffman Estates?! OMG, the end is near!
The replies to Brad's tweet can't seem to grasp that Hoffman Estates is a village, not an HOA. They also can't seem to grasp that it was the village manager who urged people to call 9-1-1 and not the reporter.
Hoffman Estates has banned ice cream trucks since at least 1997 - per the Chicago Tribune. The ban was enacted for what were cited as public safety reasons. As of July 28, 2016, they were still banned, according to NBC Chicago.
From the Chicago Tribune on May 23, 1997 [emphases mine]:
Midwestern suburbs are strange places. They're a bizarre hybrid of small town and big city - with the best and worst of both exaggerated.
Conan the Grammarian at May 9, 2020 1:11 PM
I'd like to see someone try to fine people for calling 9-1-1 - especially after the village manager publicly urged them to do so.
It was the village manager who urged people to call 9-1-1, not the reporter. If someone in Hoffman Estates calls 9-1-1, they'll get the Hoffman Estates police department.
Hoffman Estates is a village, a town in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago with a population of 51,000+. Sears is headquartered there. The village is also home to the US subsidiaries of several Japanese companies.

IRA Darth Aggie: Why 6 feet?
CDC: Because droplets from sneezing and coughing can't travel more than 6 feet.
IRA Darth Aggie: Challenge accepted!
CDC: Thanks to IRA Darth Aggie, we now recommend social distancing of 20 yards.

I have no idea why a law/regulation was needed for this ice cream truck.
If somebody gets sick because they bought something there, then they know not to go back.
Like if he was selling raw milk.
In other news, don't tell people they're not important. They'll make up ways to SHOW YOU OTHERWISE, YOU PEASANT!
Radwaste at May 9, 2020 4:56 PM
It wasn't for just this ice cream truck. Hoffman Estates banned all ice cream trucks when children were hit, or almost hit, by cars running across the street for ice cream without looking both ways first.
Conan the Grammarian at May 9, 2020 5:51 PM
Who cares what some housing development wants to have for rules. Don't like it, don't live there.
NicoleK at May 10, 2020 4:17 AM
Town, NicoleK, not housing development.
And many other Chicago suburbs have banned or restricted ice cream trucks, too. See my earlier posts.
Conan the Grammarian at May 10, 2020 5:24 AM
Making it an actual law does sound draconian
NicoleK at May 10, 2020 8:04 AM
With the inevitable advent of peer-to-peer networked electric cars and on-the-fly charging, those ice cream trucks will be driverless, automated, refilled by drones, and running 24/7.
Dear Diary: It's 3:00 a.m. and that damned ice cream truck is outside again, playing 'Pop Goes The Weasel' for the millionth time, just sitting there. Waiting.
I never should have gotten drunk and bought that ice cream bar three years ago.
