I am Jewish and thus I'm told I control the weather. I can't recall making it rain there, but perhaps it's because I was a little busy this morning doing laundry and baking my neighbors into matzos.

• Anyone seen Cousin Dave yet?
• Lenona, you were talking about Maher the other day, and I agree with you-- He has a few clear thoughts about what he sees, but the problem is that he's never let that interfere with saying the trite, lefty things. It's showbiz, after all, and being popular is his business. Jon Stewart seemed even less principled.
I'm only three years younger. In the early naughts, Maher was dating a smokeshow of a makeup artist from one of the Hollywood tabloid shows I worked at, a tall, slender brunette with a sneaky smile, about 25 years old. Despite sincere effort, it was impossible to feel resentment: If I could have, I would have too.
His interview with Rogan a few months ago was pretty good, with some surprising glimpses of integrity. (He thinks internet porn in out of control and speaks with considerable passion about it, for being child-free.)
Crid at June 21, 2020 1:36 AM
Similarly-- I always liked Dennis Miller's comedy more than it deserved, given the transparent mechanics of his delivery and his reliance on more-talented writers. But I liked him in this Shapiro interview. He's graceful about falling out of the limelight for senioriaty, and admits that his only real gift as a comedian was "a fast hard drive."

The theory is babies will naturally hold their breath and paddle when tossed in the water. It is an instinctual thing. I think it is water babies early swimming training . I hear it works.
Never brave enough to try it with my kids, and don’t know if it was a thing yet when they were infants, but did do something similar with our son.
Bought the daughter a bike at four and was teaching her to ride it. The son, two was desperate to ride the bike as well. So we put him on it, no training wheels, and off he went. He had no fear and an innate sense of balance. Took him a day to learn how to pedal. He doesn’t remember learning how to ride. It is like he always knew.

Thanks, Isab. As usual, Twitter won't function unless one has quite a bit of time on one's hands. So I gave up with the video. I couldn't even get the back arrow to function.
At any rate, I'd already seen a TV news story on infant swimming classes, many years ago. Except that the infant was fully clothed. They said that was because when children drown in pools, it's very often when they ARE fully clothed, so that's part of the "training."

Oh, and Amy, that's interesting. I'd always heard it was the Druids who controlled the weather. Never anyone else - aside from witches, I suppose.

Remember all those kicks he gave you? training, just training.

I can't believe nobody's blaming George W. Bush for the weather.

It's been a little while since they promised a chicken in every pot. Tho that may make a come back.

I have a brother-in-law who did that with his children. They'd been taught to right themselves in the water and stay afloat.
He'd visit his mother in the old folks complex with his family and toss his daughter into the pool just for the shocked reactions he'd get from the octogenarians sitting around the pool..
Conan the Grammarian at June 21, 2020 8:10 AM
Btw, Conan, thanks for the Mark Twain quotation - plus your own remarks in that June 20 post - in the other thread.
And if anyone thinks Twain was too harsh in his thinking, well, you probably never heard what the late Harold Bloom said - that even people who READ a certain author's books (and many other books, no doubt) are no better off than those who don't read at all. Now THAT's bad snobbery. (Examples of good snobbery might be "literacy is better than illiteracy" or "facts are more important than feelings.")

Honey, I ain't buyin' you that.
Kid, that ain't no way to have fun.

Maher show is worth the time for me because of the panelists. Learn who to follow and who to run screaming from.
