It's a bit condescending, as it starts out with an assumption of racism on the part of white men and white supremacy on the part of society, but it's an interesting article.

Though her subjects are worried about catching COVID-19, many see it as one of the unfortunate but acceptable risks of life.

This harkens back to the City Journal article on the red-blue divide on risk I linked to a few threads back.

We often think of blue states as being more open and tolerant of individual freedoms; they were the first to allow gay marriage, for example, and are more liberal on transgender issues. But openness to social change is only one aspect of risk. When it comes to other issues, blue states often stress protecting the community over individuals’ right to take risks and bear the consequences. ~ City Journal

Conservatives are less risk-averse in financial and personal matters than liberals. Liberals tend to stress community safety over individual freedom. There's room for both in a society, but a balance has to be struck.
