Protestors.. of what?

Bill Maher is a smug ass, but sometimes he hits the nail on the head.
In this clip he laments America's lack of ability to get things done vs. China's ability to build a bridge in 43 hours; calling Americans a silly people who are "having a woke competition deciding whether Mr. Potato head has a dick."
I disagree with him on the need for high-speed trains, but agree with him on the comparison of China's ability to build millions of miles of rail transit while we're "$6 billion in the hole just trying to finish the track connecting vital hubs of Bakersfield and Merced."
"The truth? You don't want the truth. You want to hear that Americans are better than anybody else. They're kicking our butts, that ain't luck. There's your truth. Sure, the great old American do-or-die spirit. Yeah, it's alive. But they've got it. I tell you, we'd better get it back. We'd better get it back damn fast. Instead, we're strutting around telling ourselves how great we are. I guess if I was really a leader, I would've told you this months ago. Instead, I was telling you basketball stories. I put myself in front of the town and I' m really sorry. I swear to you, man, I' m really sorry." ~ from the movie, Gung Ho

Breona Taylor's death. From last year.

China's ability to build a bridge in 43 hours
If/when that bridge collapses and kills dozens or hundreds, there won't be lawsuits filed, there may be a committee put together to investigate the cause but they won't fault the government if the contractor cut corners to meet the deadline. Someone will be executed, or sent to a camp, or they may find some reactionary elements to blame for sabotage.

I can respect vituperation of this magnitude.

> If/when that bridge collapses and

Nope, it's time to take the point. When in 2020 the CHinese needed to build a hospital in four days or whatever, they did it. I'm sure there were problems- A few missing computer ports, a few oxygen ports that were jammed…
But they did it. That project was sitting on a shelf somewhere until someone in government said 'Time to do the hospital-in-a-week thing.' Within seconds, an underling opened the manila folder, picked up the phone, and started checking things off the list.
Can you imagine that happening in the United States? Where? DC? Nebraska? Louisiana?
The Chinese are competent. They're evil, too, but they're competent. See the comment on the previous page at March 14, 2021 5:46 PM.
As Srinivasan says: Progressives need to understand that states can fail; Libertarians need to understand that states can succeed.

America used to do that kind of thing. When there was a need for a polio hospital in North Carolina's Catawba Valley, the town of Hickory built one within 54 hours.

Our system is mucked up with red tape. It's been a long while since the difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes only a little longer was a thing.

For a public educational, this bit fails the competency test. Why muffle the good news?

I’m a bit old for going cross country by snowshoe or anything else. Except in the best of weather.
My son went to work Saturday evening (at a large Satellite facility) His relief did not report in yesterday morning so he ended up working a 34 hour shift.
Good news, we didn’t lose power. Everyone is safe. Son made it home this morning.

The Japanese bureaucrats adore red tape as much their American counterparts. And yet they can fix a sinkhole of this size and complexity in a week:

For most everything I've loved in life outside the bedroom, sushi bar, and scuba site, I wish to God that this web page had been around when I was a teenager to explain the technology of my career, technical, and artistic aspirations.

Right now I'm enjoying the cold fear sweats of Pelosi and Elizabeth "Fauxcahontas" Warren over the Newsom recall.

"The Japanese bureaucrats adore red tape as much their American "
Red tape doesn't quite have the same meaning in other countries.
in Japan red tape mainly means a hierarchy based on competency. In the US especially in gov't it is based on power fights and incompetency, can't get rid of the incompetent. Though it's getting worse
Other countries it's worse. Red tape is based on graft and bribery. the US is bad but still a long way away from needing to pay an official to actually get anything done.

Didn't CA recall Jerry Brown a couple years ago? It feels like Californians are forever recalling their politicians.

OMG I'm old. I was thinking of Davis. And it was in '03. And it feels like a couple years ago.
NicoleK at March 16, 2021 11:49 PM
You might want to look deeper into Japanese red tape Joe. There is a hierarchy but it isn't based on competency.
