Portland Mayor Rethinks Lawless Shit-hole Approach
Portland used to be a nice place. On Thursday, rioters burned the courthouse there -- Portland as usual, these days. If somebody isn't getting murdered, something's being burned down.
The Mayor, it seems, has been jolted to is senses. At the Wash Ex, Andrew Mark Miller writes:
The mayor of Portland, Oregon, has submitted a request for $2 million in funding for the police months after the city slashed the budget in a move he advocated for.Mayor Ted Wheeler, a Democrat, asked the Portland City Council for the additional funds, citing a surge in gun violence throughout the city, according to the Oregonian.
The city has had 208 shootings so far this year to go along with 20 homicides, compared to only one homicide at the same point last year.
The mayor and the Portland City Council slashed police funding last year in response to racial justice protests in the wake of George Floyd's death.
"The cutbacks created a vacuum that undermined public safety and the very communities whose voices the Council -- and our community -- seek to amplify," J. W. Matt Hennessee, the leader of the Inter-Faith Peace & Action Collaborative, said in a letter to the Oregonian.
Genius move, defunding the police -- great for "woke" show, at least before people start gunning others down in the streets.
Heather Mac Donald points out that it's poor and elderly minority women and others who need protection who want their neighborhoods policed and kept safe.
It's the weakest who suffer in these "defund the police" showboats -- like babies who catch a stray bullet in a drive-by.

Ted Wheeler is the biggest failure of a mayor in America, which is saying something. His State of the City address was relabeled "State of the Possible" (insert barf emoji):
Wheeler also announced the creation of five "action tables" that will further the work of his top priorities for the city: Safety and Compassion, Clean and Green, Community Events, Business Reopening and Success, and Reputation Recovery and Rebranding. Members of the public are welcome to join these action tables.
"Action tables." "Safety and Compassion." "Reputation Recovery and Rebranding."

Re-funding the police is necessary, but may not be sufficient. A big part of the problem is that Wheeler, his police chief and DA, and the state attorney general and governor made a policy decision to pretend that Antifa and BLM are "protesters" and that only right-wingers (and all of them) are terrorists. So long as that remains the official truth in Portland, that city will continue to be a blight on our nation.
Better to nuke the place than allow that to continue.

World travel broadens your perspective on just how lawless and shit holey the possibilities are.
Isab at March 14, 2021 9:53 AM
My travel experience was not especially broad or deep, but it certainly wasn't concentrated in modernity, and yours was my observation as well.
So many little things... Like—
Stuff that seems obvious in postwar America. So obvious that we don't even see the forces that make it happen. We're born woke, and live that way until the first paycheck… When we have some questions about deductions.

In the age of always-online public surveillance cameras? If there's one lawless third-world thing that can never happen anymore would be death squads roaming at night in troublesome areas. Specially if you consider that that kind of things are always done with the off-the-record blessing and support of the police/military/feds.
I mean, there's plenty of videos of that kind of thing on LiveLeak.
Sixclaws at March 14, 2021 4:08 PM
Can't tell what you mean.

Those mask mandates were certainly a two-fer, weren’t they?
Isab at March 14, 2021 4:29 PM
Can't tell what that means, either.
Crid at March 14, 2021 5:52 PM
@Crid,
I thought you meant that someone would suggest applying third-world solutions to an increasing problem in a first-world nation.
@Isab,
The mask mandates are meant for harvesting a treasure trove of images/video and train software to recognize people with the most minimal amount of detail.
Sixclaws at March 14, 2021 7:17 PM
> someone would suggest applying
> third-world solutions
Absolutely.
But it seems like you selected that word to help make the point attributed to Thomas Sowell: "There are no solutions. There are only trade-offs."
If the Third World really 'solves' problems, why does everyone want out of it?
Ah... Okay, Isab meant that the mask would protect the wearer from gummint observation as well as deadly disease. Got it.
Masks also hide chins, which is kind of cool if you (sometimes) carry a spare.
But I agree with Six, the challenge of identifying people from just the eight square inches visible from middle-nose to just over the eyebrow is the kind of dare that AI researchers take in stride nowadays. Those people are learning to drive without drivers! Identifying people behind masks will be easy.

Not all Third-world nations are created equal. At the end of the day it all sums up on what kind of European nation colonized it.
I still keep on hearing elderly people talking about how things would have beem so much better if the English had conqueres Latin America instead of the dumpster fire Spaniards.
Sixclaws at March 15, 2021 11:54 AM
The English had rule of law. A habit they exported to most of their colonies. Pretty much every other European nation had law for the highest bidder. Which really wasn't that different than what most conquered nations already had going.
So what difference does that make? Look at Hong Kong. What resources did Hong Kong have? Pretty much nothing. It was a shitty island off the coast of China. What skilled people did it have? None. Anything else special about the place? Nope. Just rule of law and low taxes grew a piece of nothing into a city of 7 million with a GDP around $400 billion. Now that the Chinese are back in control it is returning to a bit of nothing.
