In America, hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions make their careers defending the security of money in typical finance. They drive to work, they fill millions of well-lit and well-heated offices, and they pursue their careers with passionate ambition, using enormous resources to do so.
Bitcoin miners and nodes are a tiny fraction of that, by any proportion of the wealth involved.

Yep. This month, we're celebrating the one-year anniversary of "Two Weeks to Flatten the Curve."

It might actually prove worth it, if enough people get a clue about both the unaccountability and totalitarian nature of the elected and unelected bureaucracy. Assuming, of course, that there is still a way to vote ourselves out of this nightmare.

There are too few odes to indoor plumbing. On the other hand: Billy Edd Wheeler, Ode to the Little Brown Shack Out Back
As a resident of Austin, I second that emotion. We never lost our water during the recent winter event but many others did, including some folks that we know. People here were melting snow in order to flush their toilets. So, yeah, we need multiple songs singing the joys of running water.

From Dear Abby:
"Man Takes Umbrage at Women Who Are Stingy With Thanks"
DEAR ABBY: I am a male reader with a complaint. Have you noticed that women hardly ever compliment men? On anything! They expect men to compliment them but never reciprocate.
If you move furniture, take them out for a nice dinner, buy tickets to their favorite show, buy them a gift, they don't have enough manners or couth to say thank you or express appreciation. Getting a compliment is like pulling teeth from a great white shark while he's feeding.
Don't women ever think, "Maybe I should say something to HIM instead of expecting him to say it to me"? Where do they learn this behavior? Are they taught this growing up? Or do they just not care or even realize?
-- SHAKING MY HEAD IN NEW JERSEY
DEAR SHAKING: My late mother, God rest her soul, once commented to me that people with "class" never use that word. In this case, I will make an exception and tell you that individuals of both sexes who have class were taught from early childhood the magic words "please" and "thank you," and to express gratitude.
I don't know what kind of women you are involved with, but I'm suggesting it is time to upgrade the quality. Do not spoil anyone who isn't willing to spoil you right back.

Trouble is, neither the LW or Abby seems to realize that there's a big difference between giving compliments and saying please and thank you. The top-rated commentators were far more astute.
On the other hand, I liked the comment about "class." It reminds me (even though this isn't exactly the same thing) of how many of the better-educated Gen Xers never seem to use the word "cool" in casual conversation. Even back when they were teens.

If you've had a weird communication with Glenn Greenwald at some point (✓) or have often thought his takes on complicated events were over-caffeinated and silly (✓✓✓✓✓[…]), you might enjoy this interview.
See especially the part about his work habits as a lawyer.
Yeah, ladies. Give out lots of compliments to men and then see what happens.

Men and women are indistinguishable in all ways. You cannot tell the difference between them. No no. No differences.

NicoleK, I take it you read the comments - or maybe you guessed what they said.
Bottom line: Yes, it's rude not to say please and thank you, within reason. Or to accept favors or gifts with no intention of returning them. (The latter is even often illegal, in business, regardless of anyone's gender.)
However, any man who thinks women should be flattered by compliments (regarding her looks) from male strangers or from male co-workers - and/or gets offended when she doesn't return such compliments - doesn't understand that such compliments are not, typically, a part of common courtesy. Again, regardless of gender. (Praise for work well done is another matter altogether.)

> We're men.
The all-time prettiest young woman I ever knew — not most beautiful, not most alluring, not most attuned, but prettiest — understood that. She was perfectly courteous to everyone always… But she wouldn't smile with teeth until you were a friend.
Once I go to know her, and to know there were no psychological scars in her development or anything, I put it together....
If she smiled, guys — even passersby in elevators, etc. — would presume she was proposing marriage.
It's okay to dislike crypto, but energy ain't the problem.
