Thankfully, at least some of the commentators pointed out that if a woman doesn't want to have sex on the third date, it does NOT mean that she has a low sex drive - or would be sexually incompatible with him! It doesn't even mean she's saving sex for marriage - or is exploiting him financially.

(I'm sure that over the last century, many have pointed out that just because even married women need a lot more foreplay in bed than men, that doesn't mean they're incompatible or that her needs are irrelevant. So what's the difference when it comes to dating?)

I just wish Miss Manners would tackle the "third date" problem. I searched and couldn't find anything. She DID famously say that silence is best, because a woman's explanation for her refusal to date a man, marry him, or do "anything in between" typically only makes the man very unhappy.

That's all very well if the woman doesn't mind losing him. Trouble is, what if she doesn't want to lose him and she IS saving sex for marriage - or at least until she loves him? Silence can easily send the wrong message.

Besides, leaving aside those men who definitely ONLY want short-term relationships, would a man today really believe that a woman who doesn't have sex on the third date would make a bad wife?
