The Hybrid Car You Never Hear About
Adventures in biodiesel. Everything you could want to know, and maybe a little more. Especially interesting is the question why aren't the car companies mass-producing more fuel-efficient vehicles -- when they have them designed and "fully functional"?

Well - why didn't you have a Sony Beta VCR, and why do so many think that spyware and viruses are a normal part of their on-line experience?

I'm not quite connecting all that.

I, personally, have a hybrid car instead of biodiesel because I'm not technically savvy enough to deal with creating, then maintaining the latter.

I did. I used it professionally as well as domestically, and it was way better than the VHS.

Because they haven't heard about Ad-Aware and AVG, poor dears?

And, I might add, because they don't have Macs.

How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways.

Arrrgh!!!! This article really pissed me off. The only reason these cars aren't massed produced is that somewhere, someone would lose money on it. THIS is what's wrong with capitalism. Sure, you can argue that the consumer gets what they want, but unfortunately the average consumer has no real mind of their own and only wants what they have been told to want.....

Hey - the answer is, "Consumers don't want cheap little junk, or something that nobody else is buying." But, I have to point out that VW is selling diesel cars right and left. Strangely, Isuzu, who produced diesel engines for Chevrolet's Chevette and who makes the 300+HP Duramax for the 1-ton pickup, is not on the market with a small diesel to compete with VW in cars. Nissan once offered the D21 Hardbody compact pickup with a 2.5L 4-cylinder diesel.

The big deal for Americans is that a car can't seem insubstantial, it has to go when you step on the gas pedal, and it shouldn't steer like a barge. Why there isn't a diesel Element, minus a few ugly panels, I dunno!

Diesel is $2.85 a gallon.

Yes, Diesel is $2.85, but diesel trucks are getting as much as 50% better mileage. Where I work, there is a minimum drive distance of 16 miles; the Site security boundary is that far out. The staff out here has found the utility of having a Corolla to come to work, and the Dodge Turbo Diesel or Ford Powerstroke to tow boats, travel trailers, etc.

They find it wonderful to get 22+ MPG rather than 14-16 when bobtailing.

I have a 2-month-old Sentra, which gets 34 MPG; VW makes a couple of cars which get 48, but they're about $5K more. The story is the same for cars and trucks: drive a lot, you'll pay for it one way or another.

I wish my company would let me work at the house, but they won't.

I drove a Diesel Rabbit for 18 years, but never again. 52 horsepower just doesn't cut it for anything but carrying Beta tapes, Macs, and Birkenstocks.

Incidentally, bio-diesel is a non-renewable resources as it depends on using up our diminishing supply of top soil and lots of chemical fertilizer from oil; not to mention the harm the pesticides do to the drinking water.

My solution is to cut back on air travel.

Incidentally, diesel causes cancer, but I suppose shorter life spans will aid conservation so maybe that's a Good Thing.
