Don't Say "Never Again," Just Ask "When?"
The Holocaust will happen again -- unless all the Jews clear out of Europe. And if it isn't the Jews losing everything, it'll just be non-Islamic Europeans. Bye-bye Western civ! As I've said here, "Visit old Europe while you can -- because it won't be around for long!" Diana West writes in The Washington Times of what's to come:
Europe, as we may readily observe, is very far along in an accommodation with its still-increasing Muslim immigrant population that is resulting not in the Europeanizing of Islam, but rather the Islamizing of Europe. As Bernard Lewis declared in 2004, Europe will have an Islamic majority by the end of the 21st century at the latest. As Vlaams Belang's Mr. Dewinter recently put it, "We are becoming foreigners in our own land." Such tragic pronouncements turn conversation with Vlaams Belang into a kind of political free verse -- sadly evocative but rooted in a desperate reality that should shake American complacency. That is, "foreigners in our land" is poetry; Mohammed as the most popular boy's name in Brussels for six years running is implacable fact. The idea that "We are living on a dying continent but we are not dead yet," as Mr. Dewinter has explained, is metaphorical. His citation from Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi that "Allah is mobilizing Muslim Turkey to add... 50 million more Muslims" to the European Union augurs world-class revolution. Is such a revolution desirable? After writing nearly incessantly about Islamization since September 11, I won't surprise anyone by saying no -- not if freedom of conscience, religious equality or women's rights are your bag (not to mention the glorious representational artwork Europe's museums are stuffed with). Besides, the strategic implications for the United States are, in a word, bleak.
In multiculturally totalitarian Belgium, however, you make such judgments at your own risk. Vlaams Belang, a conservative, free-market party that stands for Flemish secession from the French-speaking part of Belgium and opposes continued immigration, now stands trial in a Belgian court for a comment -- a comment! -- Mr. Dewinter made in 2005 to a New York publication, The Jewish Week. When asked why Belgian Jews should vote for a party that espouses "xenophobia," Mr. Dewinter replied: "Xenophobia is not the word I would use. If [it] absolutely must be a 'phobia,' let it be 'Islamophobia.' Yes, we're afraid of Islam. The Islamization of Europe is a frightening thing."
If convicted of the "crime" of "Islamophobia" ("1984," anyone?), the party would lose its state funding. In a country that effectively prohibits private political fund-raising, Vlaams Belang -- the largest party in Belgium -- would ultimately cease to exist. And so, too, would free speech in the center of Europe.
...As Mr. Vanhecke put it in a recent speech, "They call us 'intolerant' because we oppose intolerance. They call us 'fascists' because we oppose Islamofascism. They call us 'the children of holocaust perpetrators,' because we oppose Islamists who are preparing a new holocaust against the Jews."
America must start paying attention to Europe. And to Vlaams Belang.
I'm reminded of a question I asked my father when I was a kid: "Why didn't Jews in America do anything about The Holocaust? Why didn't anybody?" He didn't have an answer. Maybe people were as complacent then as most of us are now -- caring more about the Anna Nicole Smith of the day than the wolf in a bomb vest at the door, waiting to impose Sharia law, dhimmitude, and/or death on the rest of us.
Reminder: Every victory for Islam in America is a victory against the free society we now have, and a chipping away of our freedoms.

But victories in Iraq, and other third world shitholes, don't count?

Personally, I see the upcoming French elections as a leading indicator on how Europe will be heading towards a path of confrontation or capitulation to the Islamic threat. A Nicolas Sarkozy victory will be an optimistic sign of Europe's survival.
Joe at March 17, 2007 10:05 AM
Do you really think French people fear the encroach of Islam more than they fear having socialist protections taken away? Well, I guess that's exactly what you're suggesting the elections will predict. I think the French left will probably be denying the danger of the encroach until they're taken away in boxcars.

You see victory in Iraq, Casca? I see a huge mess of our making, while we've divided forces that could have been rooting out Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and taking out their leaders worldwide.

For my generation Europe is already dead, we look more twoards Asia for culture. Peeps my age are more impressed when I say I've been to Japan, than anywhere in Europe.

Well, Ségolène Royal's poll numbers just plummeted at the end of February, 2007. Her lack of foreign policy experience, a string of national controversies and the possibility of losing votes from Francois Bayrou's UDF as the saner leftists' choice. Even though Bayrou's campaign has centered mostly on E.U. policies. Also, key UDF (Society in Movement) politicians are openly supporting Sarkozy’s campaign.
Sarko just has to move more to the center. Distance himself from looking too pro-America or pro-Atlanticist policies. Concentrate on law and order policies and immigration reform. Since December 6, 2006, he has stayed consistently above 50% in the polls.

I am well aware of American paranoia but this really takes the cake. I can only assume it's a sort of wishful thinking on the part of some Americans who are convinced all of Europe are 'anti-American' when in fact we simply agree with over half of your citizens, namely that you are being governed by morons. Diana West is a joke. Vlaams Belang is not a 'conservative' but a member of the far right. We had quite enough of those 70 years ago, but clearly America still has a love affair with lunatic extremist (most of whom are white, Christian and citizens of the USA)
Mike Power at March 17, 2007 2:02 PM
I'm a post-Jewish atheist; fiscally conservative and socially libertarian, but...I read. Apparently you don't. Whatever you think of Vlaams Belang, Europe is being overrun by people who don't seek to live and let live but to transform Europe into a place under Sharia law, where non-Muslims are dhimmis -- taxed for not being Muslims and turned into third-class citizens without rights...if they're even allowed to live. We're next. It's different here in the USA simply because our population is so vast.
As I've said before, I think belief in astrology is just as stupid as belief, without evidence, in god, and the ensuing waste of life worshipping The Imaginary Friend. That said, astrologers don't want us dead, don't feel compelled to run the lives of the rest of us based on the moon being in Aquarius, and don't wish to pass laws and have allowances made to accomodate their silly-ass beliefs. I'm no fan of any god-believing religion, but most of the Jews don't seek to legislate the tenets of Judaism on the rest of us, and I rail against the Christian fundamentalists who try. Still, what separates them from far too many Muslims is the fact that they just want us to bend to their will, they don't want to kill us for not believing as they do.

Mike -
Get your hands straight. Fascism is an inherently leftist ideology. Which, of course, is why I am opposed to the term 'Islamofascist', as they fail to be fascist right from the first go (the first goal of Mussolini in his Fascist Manifesto was to guarantee the vote to all women, which Islamists oppose). The proper term for them is "Islamists", because their ideology completely fails to be described by any traditional left-right scale. To the Islamist, the whole of the law shall be Islam, and anything else shall be destroyed. I can think of no political ideology that requires the removal of all evidence of any competitor throughout history such as Islam does.
Mike, you may think we are paranoid, but we are not. We're simply aware. And in 20 years, when the Islamists have demographically achieved that which has evaded their military prowess for the past 1,300 years, you'll be singing a different tune. While glowing in the dark.

I only wish we were paranoid. The truth is, I didn't give Islam any thought until 9/11 -- but, from all the reading I've been doing since then, I think anybody who isn't feeling alarmed by this must be on a 24/7 news diet of Anna Nicole Hilton (my name for Saturday for the national useless-celebrity-mania).
Amy Alkon at March 17, 2007 5:42 PM
From what I've read of the 1930s and 40s, most people, even the leadership, were not aware of the extent to which the Nazis were going forward with the holocaust.
Today we have some Islamists fully announcing their intentions, beheading people on the internet, and still we have self haters/apologists like Mike Power who will get on the boxcar knowing full well what is in store.
Mike, you say "Diane West is a joke". What exactly is funny, or wrong about what she writes? You say "Vlaams Belang is not a 'conservative' but a member of the far right." Compared to what? And just because someone is far right, does that make them incorrect?
It seems to me, Mike, that you have joined the religion of self-hatred and anti-Americanism.

"You see victory in Iraq, Casca? I see a huge mess of our making, while we've divided forces that could have been rooting out Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and taking out their leaders worldwide."
Of course you do, because you know nothing about how wars are fought, and strategy is executed. I visited my nephew in Yuma this weekend. He's a career Army Ranger type. He's never been to Iraq. But he's spent a lot of time in the mountains of Afghanistan. It's Spring, and the bad guys are coming back into Afghanistan from their Pakistani safe harbor, and we're killing them by the bushel as I write this. There isn't a corner of this world where we don't have a finger in the pie of this fight, you just won't read about it in The Times, because their writers don't know anything about national security policy and our military either.
Casca at March 19, 2007 10:33 AM
You are paranoid and I think poorly read. Check the real statistics on the supposed over running of Europe.
We have over reacted in ways that have increased their power. Time to stop and think.
don at March 22, 2007 12:31 PM
Don, besides being a little light in the grammar and syntax department, you're uninformed. A little closer to home, 12 percent of Canadian Muslims thought it was okay to kill the prime minister and blow up parliament. That's 84,000 people. Muslims, that is. You go to Europe often? I do. To France, where this is a serious problem. Up til about six months ago, I was planning to buy a small apartment in Paris. Not anymore. Read Robert Spencer and see if you would call him "poorly read" and paranoid. On the contrary, I'd call him sober, extremely informed, and wise to sound the alarm.
Oh, one more thing: If you're going to make a contention -- "We have over reacted in ways that have increased their power" -- you might support it. Otherwise, you're just wasting space. Kind of like all that unused space in your head with all the air whistling through.
