In one the later books (maybe Eat The Rich , PJ O'Rourke says the history of famine isn't about there not being enough to eat, but that people don't have enough to eat. That is, people don't starve, but they can be starved. It's not a natural state, it's something we do to each other.
That's one of those I laughed at with my hand over my mouth.
