National PR Person's Day
While looking for updates on the story about the misappropriation of foster children's gift cards/funds I noticed that the L.A. Times, which has long banned my advice column from its pages (despite the fact that I regularly kick their ass at the LA Press Club Awards), promotes this bullshit "holiday" I got press releases about, "Boss' Day":
Did anyone know we could talk about: National Boss Day. It’s not only secretaries who get a day, people! Bosses deserve recognition too. And their high salaries, expensive clothes and carte blanche to tell you what to do certainly do not take the place of a thoughtful card and perhaps a small gift one day a year. Think about it.
You know, if you're somebody's boss, and you hired wisely, they're the one who deserves the attention, not you, you big girl's blouse.
The guys the work for me use boss's day to "roast" me. It's much more fun than getting a stupid card telling me what a great boss I am.

Someday I'll give a dinner for all my assistants, past and present, so they can all make fun of me.

I absolutely LOVE my boss. He and his family are excellent people! I think I'll buy him lunch today. Either that, or we (me and the rest of the crew here) will take him out for happy hour at the local pub. o_O

"And their high salaries, expensive clothes and carte blanche to tell you what to do certainly do not take the place of a thoughtful card and perhaps a small gift one day a year."
This reminds me of the incredibly stupid company-wide message an old CEO of mine once sent, which went, roughly, "...as we enjoy our bonus for the year..."
He made 4 million that year, and his message was to those of us who made his bonus possible - for 1/100th the $$.
While I know that the only satisfactory way to correct the way a job is done is to take it yourself, I may still point out such idiocy.

Smart bosses share the wealth. My assistant gets a bonus when I do an article, I get her coffee when I order Ristretto, and she'll be getting a bonus when I get my book advance. She's fantastic, and fantastic should be rewarded.

"...certainly do not take the place of a thoughtful card and perhaps a small gift one day a year"
Does the writer realize executives make so much money they defer their pay to reduce their taxes? And that this perk increases the tax load on their company? And that all the workers have to produce MORE to offset this money-grab?
I'm happy to buy a man a drink on his birthday but I draw the line at Bosses' Day. What brown-noser came up with this one?!

One who works for Hallmark, I'm guessing.
