Separation Of Mosque And State
Canada has "taken it on itself to be the defender of radical Islam," in the words of Western Standard publisher Ezra Levant, interrogated by Canada's joke of a "Human Rights Commission" for publishing the Danish "anti-Muslim" cartoons. (As Treach wrote on the Daily Gut, where I got the link to the video of Levant's opening statement:

A Canadian imam claimed to be anguished by Levant's decision, and when he couldn't convince Levant to apologize for hurting his feelings, he reported Levant to some sort of quasi-legal government board called the Alberta Human Rights Commission. Last week Levant was legally compelled to sit before them and be subject to their questioning about his motives, and he demanded to record the proceedings. He obviously came prepared. If these people were expecting meek compliance...

Here's the first of the tapes of his kangaroo court appearance:

As he so eloquently puts it in the end of the first of the tapes, "It is not I who am on trial, it is the freedom of all Canadians."

The rest, in reverse chronological order, are here. Further background is on his blog, here, including the entry "The limits of free speech, and the power to order me to apologize," which marks a sad day for Canada.

Still think there's no reason to worry about Muslims in the west? Think again. They'll abuse our laws and freedoms to take over our society and enslave us to their backward religion -- if they don't just murder us all.

That's infuriating. Fuck. I hope Canadians step up here and demand that this commission get stripped of authority to hear these sorts of cases. And for someone to tell this whiny Imam that there's no right to be offended. Shit.

This Canadian Human Rights Commission is the same body that is trying to silence Mark Steyn.

Correction: He has the right to be offended. He just doesn't have the right to make the government force the offender to apologize.

Is it just me or does the woman ("interrogator"?) look incredibly annoyed. I spotted at least one eye-roll. I don't think she likes to have her power and authority challenged. The fact that she is on such a commission, upholding such insane ideas and violating this man right and left, means that I dislike her. In fact, I'd like to grab the pencil out of her hand and put it where the sun don't shine (except, I doubt it would fit up there next to her head).

Are there more tapes????? I'm HUNGRY FOR THE REST!

GO TEAM EZRA. He's quite the little speaker, btw...totally aroused my go-win-fight spirit. I'll go hold up signs to support the victims of this shit when it starts happening here.

Nice - realized there's a link to the rest. Duh.

Just watched the next video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iMNM1tef7g

He doesn't need a lawyer. He is great. He's appealing to me and making me want to throw up my fists!

Whoops - meant "no right NOT to be offended"

WOW! I would not completely believe this if I didn't see it. Islam has quite a foothold up there if the CANADIAN GOVERNMENT is wasting this citizen's time on free speech issues. I'm sure the Imam talks in such a sweet, caring tone when mentioning western values, eh?

Amy,

Good on you for posting this! The primary problem here isn't the Muslim plaintiff - there are bullies of every race and creed. The problem is with ultra-liberal, politically correct bodies such as this Human "Rights" Commission. They have absolutely NO BUSINESS hearing this case. The very fact that they are should be the nail that shuts them down.

This is truly an ugly blemish on my country. Our new motto should be: "Canada: The True North, Questionably Strong, and Not So Free".

I think the best way to address this sort of junk, is to fight fire with fire.

In that spirit, I demand a hearing before the Ontario Human Rights Commission!

(if enough liberals are hauled before these commissions, then the Canadian press would take notice)

She looked like she couldn't even be bothered to listen and did she have a late night or something because she was not only rolling her eyes, she seemed to be having trouble staying awake and concentrating. Or maybe it's something a little less fun keeping her up at night. Like her conscience.

I think he should file a complaint finding that horrible paint by number painting offensive. They got something against the city? (Yes, I'm being tongue in cheek; that would be no less absurd than this is.)

I could care less about offending a muslim. In fact, I wish I was back in Iraq at the trigger of a 50 caliber machine gun, then we could see who I could offend.
