Sorry, Mr. Muslim, Women In America Haven't Had Their Rights Revoked Just Yet
Most conveniently, if you're a Muslim man living in a Muslim country, and you want to ditch your wife, you say "talaq" ("I divorce thee") three times.
To a Muslim man's dismay, judges ruled that that sort of thing isn't going to fly in Maryland. Nick Madigan writes for the Balt Sun:
Yesterday, the Court of Appeals rejected a Pakistani man's argument that his invocation of the Islamic talaq, under which a marriage is dissolved simply by the husband's say-so, allowed him to part with his wife of more than 20 years and deny her a share of his $2 million estate.

Oh boo friggin' hoo. What, we're supposed to feel bad for this idiot? I feel sorry for the woman who put up with this asshole's abuse for 20 years!

Flynne - How do you know the man has been abusing the woman for 20 years?
Norman at May 8, 2008 7:16 AM
[Sarcasm]Well, I believe we can't reach the civilization level of Saudi-Arabia. It is sad to know that we are ignoring the "Enlightened Ones" who should guide us, poor Dhimmi people, towards the path of true justice. It is a loss for us to have departed of our medievalist view of justice and morale. How many Hollywood tarts and "Celebrities" sluts would deserve to wear chastity belts today?[/Sarcasm]
Oh well, It's good to know that there's places in the world where the religious flying **** got caught by the gravity of common sense, laws and integrity.

Y'know, Norman, I don't. I was making an ass of myself, assuming that this guy was a moron, because he thought he could divorce his wife just by uttering an Islamic phrase 3 times. I really have no love for people of that ilk. My bad.

Canada, the United States and much of Europe have a way of life that attracts immigrants. This way of life is the primary reason for our prosperity that is so attractive to the rest of the world.
When people come to North America to get a piece of the American (or Canadian) dream, but still want to stick way of life from their country of origin, it reminds me of Amy's description of "cafeteria feminism". I'll take an order of prosperity and freedom, but I want Sharia law when it suits me.
Steamer at May 8, 2008 7:43 AM
Norman? What I said before? Based on the following, from the article Amy linked to, I have to take it back. The guy is a class-A abusive prick:
In 2003, Aleem's wife filed for divorce in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
When he filed a counterclaim, he did not object to the court's jurisdiction over the case, according to the ruling. But before the legal process could be completed - and without telling his wife - Aleem went to the Pakistani Embassy in Washington and invoked the talaq, in effect attempting to turn jurisdiction of the case over to a Pakistani court that later granted him a divorce.
"If we were to affirm the use of talaq, controlled as it is by the husband, a wife, a resident of this state, would never be able to consummate a divorce action filed by her in which she seeks a division of marital property," the judges wrote in their decision.
They said the talaq "directly deprives the wife of the due process she is entitled to when she initiates divorce litigation."
Muneer Fareed, secretary-general of the Islamic Society of North America, said that if Aleem had traveled to Pakistan and invoked his talaq there, it might have been recognized in a U.S. court under the concept of comity, under which nations accept the premise of a law in another country "whether or not we agree with the law or its spirit."
But Aleem, he said, attempted to circumvent any such agreements.
"There was a certain lack of faith here because the husband initiated the talaq after his wife had filed for divorce," Fareed said. "He was trying to defeat the ends of justice within the American legal system."
Need I say more? Abuse can be emotional, and mental, as well as physical. YMMV

"
That's fine if he is a resident of Pakistan, but he is a resident and maybe even a citizen of the United States. Does anyone think that an American citizen, living in Pakistan, could choose to be judged under American law if he didn't like how Pakistani law was applied to his case?
Steamer at May 8, 2008 8:12 AM
At least in Saudi Arabia, if you complain about how the law is applied, judges have been known to apply it even more harshly.

When I was in court getting a separation agreement put in place, my lawyer told me pretty much the same thing. The judges are all powerful and if I complain about paying $400 a month, it could quickly become $600 a month.
Steamer at May 8, 2008 8:30 AM
His plan might have worked in Europe. Europeans seem hell-bent for dhimmitude.
winston at May 8, 2008 11:09 AM
Flynne - I read that too. But it doesn't say anything about the last 20 years. For all we know, she's been abusing him for 20 years and he reckons he's paid enough and wants out with all he can carry.
I'd be surprised if this was actually the case, but it is a possibility. I know, I should get real. But with Amy Alkon presiding, we have to present evidence.

Fair enough, Norman, fair enough. o_O

Still, it would be so cool if the judge in Maryland, after banging the final gavel, did the "In your face" dance.

I've begun to wonder if "Radical Muslim Views" really has more to do with being an Extremely Selfish Male Bigot than anything to do with religion. But tying it in with a religion provides good cover, no?!

I've postulated that the only reason young white males in America are converting to Islam is backlash against gender feminism - especially in college.
"You mean I can beat women and get away with it? I can tell her to do something, and she can't say no? Where do I sign up?"
brian at May 9, 2008 4:38 AM
Shit, brian, that's a scary thought!
Flynne at May 9, 2008 5:14 AM
Hmm...so I can have multiple wives, and they all do as they're told?
Sounds good. Pass me the signup sheet brian! (insert rolling eyes here)
