LA Press Club Awards
Well, I was a finalist for Journalist of the Year, and against Tim Rutten and two others from the LA Times, and I didn't get that, but I did win a first place award for my column. It's the alt weeklies/papers under 100,000 circ category:
C6. COLUMNIST
1st Place: Amy Alkon, Creators Syndicate, "The Advice Goddess"
Judges' comments: Alkon's column is a searing combination of science, libertarianism, and sass that makes for fun and thought-provoking reading. She's not afraid to make people angry.
2nd Place: Gustavo Arellano, OC Weekly, "Ask a Mexican"
Honorable Mention: Amy Klein, The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles
My blog picked up a second place award:
I7A. BLOG - INDIVIDUAL
1st Place: Brad Greenberg, The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, "God Blog"
2nd Place: Amy Alkon, AdviceGoddess.com, "Tea & Crumpet/Know Your Death Squad"
Honorable Mention: Jill Leovy, Los Angeles Times, "The Homicide Report"
And here are a few other awards I got:
B5. SIGNED COMMENTARY
1st Place: Jervey Tervalon, LA Weekly, "The Slow Death of a Chocolate City."
Judges' comments: Well written in a clear voice, this commentary takes readers into a community and gives them a look at changing demographics from a different point of view.
2nd Place: Amy Alkon, Creators Syndicate, "Look Before You Sleep."
Honorable Mention: Marc Cooper, LA Weekly, "East Versus West."
C13. HEADLINE
1st Place: Todd Cunningham, Los Angeles Business Journal, "Broke-o-Matic"
Judges' comments: Clever and appropriate.
2nd Place: Amy Alkon, Creators Syndicate, "Opportunity Knockers"
Honorable Mention: Jay Firestone, The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, "One Camp, Two Camp, Red Camp, Jew Camp"
The entire list of awards is here.

Well deserved too!

And... I doubt that any of your competitors can wear that so well. Hey - ask a Mexican!
Radwaste at June 22, 2008 12:38 PM
I love Gustavo. Smart, talented, funny, and adorable, and a really nice guy. We just hung out in Philly. Of course, being a Mexican, he carried around a box of Tasticakes all night that they were giving out at the event. Tony Ortega and I tasted one...blech! Frosted flour and lard...Tony being largely (I think) Italian with a slash of Mexican couldn't eat them either.

You look like an elegant 1940's movie star, Amy!
Robert W. at June 22, 2008 1:15 PM
Why, thank you!
I love wearing evening gowns. I'd like to wear one every day -- and sometimes do wear one with a leather jacket just around town. Now if only I could get a pumpkin coach and four horsemen...
Amy Alkon at June 22, 2008 1:32 PM
Congratulations Amy. I am glad for you, and delighted to see a voice of reason recognized. Well deserved, in my estimation.

You look gorgeous on that photo. But you also look so - stern. You've won! Let's see a big smile on your face!

Reason took home a bunch of awards. Naturally, as a libertarian advice columnist (I had no idea, but I guess it comes through even in my thinking about relationships) they sat us (Gregg and me) at the Reasonoid table.
Amy Alkon at June 22, 2008 5:21 PM
Smokin' hot, Amy. Let me know when you dump Gregg.

Oh, and Hubba-Hubba.

That photo wasn't on here this morning. While not meaning to credit the photographer disproportionately, you should, um, thank him for taking that picture.
We like to think that's your car-thief-chasing uniform.
Crid at June 22, 2008 7:56 PM
You look gorgeous- green is really a great color for you! Soooo elegant! Congratulations to the fullest!!!!

P.S. Crid...I always wear evening dresses, even when fighting crime -- just not with a train, as this one has, because people in Los Angeles are entirely unaccustomed to walking around people wearing dresses with trains. I think 25 people stepped on the back of my dress last night -- to Gregg's credit, he was not one of them. (Gregg has back shots, but he was a bit busy today, so he just gave me this one.)

Well done, Amy! So cool about the awards, and you look STUNNING. I'm loving the long, curvaceous hair - it matches your body! Gorgeous gown, too.
Jackie Danicki at June 22, 2008 10:19 PM
Amy - that's a great photo! Deserves an award all by itself! And 1st place columnist - I bet you feel pleased with yourself! Must stop now, I'm running out of exclamation marks!!!

Congratulations, Amy!
Your blog and Reason's are my two favorites and I was heartened to see both of you cleaning up. My optimistic side* thinks that you are helping to usher in a new era of journalism when readers like me can choose our sources based on content and quality rather than who can deliver a hunk of paper or broadcast signal to our homes. It's exciting.
* To call it my optimistic side is probably overstatement. Maybe optimistic corner or molecule would be more more accurate.
Shawn at June 23, 2008 5:30 AM
Conrats, Amy, well done! And I agree with everyone, you look smokin' hot! Great photo! And your hair is perfect! o_O
Flynne at June 23, 2008 6:11 AM
Congratulations for all those prices, Amy. You deserve them.
I have to say, you are beautiful on this picture. The tasteful green dress is complementary with your red hairs, making them both look stunning.
Suddently, I have a new-found respect for Gregg. My favorite poet once said:"Judge the value of the flame by the moth it attract". The best for both of you.
Toubrouk at June 23, 2008 7:14 AM
Congratulations! That is terrific! And well deserved. You do great work on your column and your blog. I googled advice goddess because I read your column in our local alt weekly and have become hooked on your blog. Your hard work pays off. Excellent writing.
And I have to concur, that is a beautiful pic of you. Greg's a wonderful photographer but he had the subject to work with too. And I also have to agree that green is your color. I liked the 1940's movie star comment. Very apt. Very beautiful and glamourous.
Donna at June 23, 2008 7:27 AM
I see that congratulations are in order, but truthfully, I skipped through all the text to see if you'd mentioned where you got that delightful dress. I know it's not news that a redhead looks lovely in hunter green, but really, it takes you from the "well dressed" category into the " wow, who's that?"
Congrats on your acheivement (the writerly one).
christina at June 23, 2008 11:32 AM
Believe it or not, Loehmann's. It's Tadashi, and I got it for more than half off the regular price. I buy evening dresses whenever I find them at a bargain price.
And now, only for readers of this blog, a fashion tip: Wasteland, the used clothing store in Santa Monica, on Fourth between Broadway and ?Arizona?, I think, got in THE most amazing stuff. Maybe from some star or fashion forward person. I found a Lanvin jacket for $18, Balenciaga for not much more. Amazing, amazing, really wild stuff (if you're looking for designers that look like expensive J. Crew, this is not the shipment of stuff to run over and shop for).
Prices at Wasteland are lower than designer resale -- $18 to $80 for most really groovy things -- but more than Goodwill, another personal favorite. (Best Goodwill/Salvation Army stores, in my opinion, are on 11th near Olympic in Santa Monica and in Silverlake on Vermont. And then, in Paris, I love Chercheminippes, on rue Cherche Midi. Depot Vente, aka resale -- designer, men's, kids', housewares, all in a bunch of stores clustered along Cherche Midi, 6th arrondissement, Duroc Métro, near the smoking dog cafe.)
I also got a really expensive but old vacuum at the Goodwill in Culver City near Robertson for $10. They have good clothes from time to time.
Best recent fashion score: $30 for a Halston evening dress at Great Labels, 11th in Santa Monica, another favorite, but I shop the bargain rack, with an occasional exception. Otherwise, rather pricey.
