Big Boobed Bimbos For Justice
It's not that big boobs make you dumb; in fact, epidemiologist William Lassek and evolutionary psychologist Steve Gaulin have found evidence to the contrary -- that women who have "bimbo bodies" are smarter and have smarter children.
Unfortunately, a number of British women with big boobs -- those mentioned in the article below -- are pretty damn dim. They just don't understand why Marks & Spencer's bras for bigger boobs costs a little more money. (Uh...because they're, like, engineered like a Sherman Tank crossed with Fort Knox crossed with the Golden Gate Bridge?)
Lucy Ballinger writes for The Daily Mail that this bunch of apparently commie idiot ladies are actually...get this!...protesting...and demanding that Marks & Spencer charge the same amount for the much-more heavily constructed big boob bras that it does for the less-engineered littler boob ones:
...members of a new group on the social networking site Facebook called Busts 4 Justice have stopped buying full-priced bras from the store in protest. Its founder Beckie Williams, a 25-year-old children's writer from Brighton, said: 'It is like having a tax on bigger breasts. I hover on the brink of where the bras get more expensive so I noticed the difference in price.
'I started trying to cram myself into the smaller sizes and realised that it was ridiculous - M&S says it needs to charge more because of the construction of the bra, but different sizes of jeans must have to be constructed with different types of workmanship, I don't see how bras are any different.'
Most British women wear bras of a DD size or larger. M&S sells some designs in sizes ranging from a 30DD to 42J cup.
Earlier this week, M&S executives came under fire from shareholders who told the annual meeting that their fashion ranges were aimed at too young a clientele and offered too much cleavage for the chain's loyal older customers.
Many of them linked the plunging necklines to the store's fall in sales.
Or could it be the plunging IQ's of some of their customers?
Take it from one who knows. Bras By Boeing isn't far from the truth. Of course I should pay more, and do.
What's next, demanding that they charge the same for a Mercedes as they do for a Ford Focus?
Actually I get their point. Often bras in stores such as Marks and Spencers(which isnt that great anyway). Will have huge differences in the price depending on size. In some cases I've seen in bras of the same size and construction the price differece between a D and a DD was nearly 50 dollars and to add insult to injury the AA-D will be on sale.

Like, Rule Brittainia.
Who knew about this?

As somebody with, well, big boobs, I can tell you that there's a big difference between a bra in a smaller size and in DD and up in construction. The best bras I've found are Empreinte, from France, which come in a big boob/small back size. (American big boob bras tend to assume you have the back of a longshoreman, which I don't, and it's impossible to find them in a 30 or 32, let alone a 34, which is too big for me.)
Best American bra for girls with boobs: Lunaire

But, there's really nothing constructed like Empreinte. Expensive, but they last you YEARS.
Victoria's Secret are made for girls with flat chests (relatively speaking) or fake'uns.
Amy Alkon at July 13, 2008 1:56 AM
And the bad thing about American bras, including Lunaire, for big boobed girls: They assume you'd like to have the twins flattened out. The French bra makers lift and separate you like you wouldn't believe.

Disclaimer: unsound (but irresistible) speculation based on anecdotal evidence below.
They have big boobs for the same reason I do. They're fat. The British were 5-10 years behind America on the fat curve, but they've almost caught up now. Scotland is home to more fat, ugly women (percentage-wise) than anywhere else I've ever been. Don't get me wrong; there are still extreme hotties there, but the percentages are low.
As for the topic at hand, I um, fully support these ladies' right to protest, but wouldn't it be simpler to just shop somewhere else? This doesn't strike me as a product with big switching costs and I haven't heard of a monopoly or cartel in bra suppliers.
Shawn at July 13, 2008 3:24 AM
Oh no....morning coffee snorked on the keyboard.
Rule Brittainia indeed; Crid you're adorkable (this is a compliment) but before you hop a plane, understand that these ladies need the bras so that their bosoms don't drop into their waistbands. My grandmere had to roll hers up before tucking them into her DD.
juliana at July 13, 2008 5:06 AM
(some)American women expecting special consideration,
for free, simply by "merit" of big tits?
So, what's new?
If they're using them to "feed the children"
then the special socialist "tax exemptions"
and WIC attitudes INSTANTLY click right in.
Now, about that threatened "entertainers" strike in the US.
CaptDMO at July 13, 2008 6:33 AM
Despite extensive fieldwork, I'm no expert on this. But....
If it's all about being fat, why aren't American women in the lead on this? Bra sizes aren't something I've given a lot conscious thought to since grade school. But given our fascination with them back in the day, we'd know if the average American size was double D... Hell, we'd have had a snarky song about it in seventh grade.
Maybe there are a lot of obese women in the western world, but that still seems like a bogus statistic.
Crid [cridcridatgmail] at July 13, 2008 9:58 AM
Actually, it's easier than ever to find circusy-large bras in America, where it used to be that I could never find them in my size. Now, I just can't find them in my back size.
Amy Alkon at July 13, 2008 10:21 AM
If big bossomed women are more intelligent... I must be dumber than a post :(.
Kendra at July 13, 2008 10:38 AM
Amy,
I think you need to post a broader article on this topic. Please include some photographic evidence (of you) in and out of the bras in question. In the spirit of scientific and economic inquiry, we need to see the ample evidence of which you write.
Gordon at July 13, 2008 10:51 AM
"circusy-large" hehe!
Crid: "... why aren't American women in the lead on this?" They might be. The problem is that when you're working out national averages in north america lots of "small" races are included. Heck the mostly-tiny Chinese women alone could lower the average size.
Big boobs don't always mean you're fat. My mom could put your eye out but the rest of her is slim and fit. But if you were a C cup as an adult and you're now a DD, or if they're accompanied by an additional chin or thigh-sized upper arms you're just kidding yourself. And I'd bet my next paycheque that the vast (sorry) majority of the Busts 4 Justice crew fall into the latter category.
I'm no defender of M & S but I don't think they should be penalized because these gals only exercise is waddling to the kitchen for a cuppa and a bacon buttie.
catspajamas at July 13, 2008 10:53 AM
Any, where are you finding these bras of myth and magic that lift and seperate the big twins? Please tell me I don't have to go to france. If I have to pay more for 'designed by boeing' I will quite happily. It's got to be cheaper than a reduction. The twins (DDD for the purient and curious) are tired of being smushed!
(Don't even get me started on the last bra I bought with "New Anti-roll technology." Now there's an ego boosting phrase. I have a 36" ribcage. I do not have 'rolls.')

http://www.advicegoddess.com/archives/2008/07/13/big_boobed_bimb.html#comment-1568453">comment from ElleEmpreinte are simply the best. They are extraordinarily expensive now, thanks to the dollar being à la poubelle (in the wastebasket), but I have to say, I keep them for years and years. They are exceptionally well-made. As for the lifting and separating, don't get the seamless ones (the ones supposedly for t-shirt wearing...I'd rather show seams than smushing). And even the really sheer looking ones are fantastic. Here are some:
http://biggerbras.com/empreinte-bras-fine-french-empreinte-lingerie.shtml
You should probably try a bunch if they're returnable. Also, there might be some store out here that has them -- if you're in Los Angeles area or someplace relatively cosmo/urban. And they sometimes have them on eBay, but never in my size. The small back thing is especially hard to fit.
PS Lunaire does make THE best sports bra, underwire, the lift and separate variety. I used to wear it under an extra small Tadpole bra from Title Nine Sports when I ran seven miles a couple times a week. They also make the best strapless bra I've found. Looks really plain and ugly, but does it ever do the job!

Guys, see the hell you don't go through trying to hold these babies up? Well, I guess it's rather enjoyable for you, providing you aren't worrying about holding up your own.
Amy Alkon at July 13, 2008 11:40 AM
And here's the bra I wore over it, from Title9...sorry, not called the Tadpole bra anymore. I got an extra small, then again, I wear 32 back in the USA and 80 or 85 in Europe -- 80 is right...85 is all I can find, usually.

Amy Alkon at July 13, 2008 11:43 AM
Oh, as for what 'causes' big boobs.
My sister and I are at opposite ends of the spectrum. I'm a 36DDD, she's a 32A/B. I take after the Slovak/Czech part of our ancestry. She takes after the German/English part. So there's your genetics.
Growing up, we've also eaten different things. Sis prefers veggies and too much meat (more than a few ounces a day) makes her ill. My body craves protein much more than hers does. I can't function without fat and protein in the morning. Other than the veggie/meat thing, we've always eaten much the same (we both have sweet tooths, we've both guzzled hormone laced milk since childhood, we both ate mom's food until we went to college)
Sis has always been more athletic than me too. She goes to the gym three days a week and plays volleyball every few nights. I hate to jog or work out areobically (all the jumping around makes the boobs hurt), but I love strength training and yoga.
I guess that doesn't really help. Sis and I are as opposite as can be despite any genes and upbringing we share.
Elle at July 13, 2008 12:24 PM
Wow, you weren't kidding about the price. But if they last longer than the department store bras then it'll all come out in the end.
And pretty designs too! I haven't had a pretty bra since I was a C-cup.
Thank goodness tomorrow is pay day.
Elle at July 13, 2008 12:40 PM
See? See? Women can talk the joy out of ANY topic.
Crid at July 13, 2008 12:41 PM
Well, Crid, see what you get for listening to them?
Just filter it to the background, "waa, wa-waa, waa, wwaa..." like Charlie Brown's teacher, and wait for a visual cue.
When they sort it out, the solution will be nice for everybody.
Radwaste at July 13, 2008 12:54 PM
On a similar topic, stores need to knock it off with the vanity sizing. If you are a large, admit you are a large and move on with life. Find some clothes that fit you well and vow to drop some pounds if it bothers you. I just tortured my poor boyfriend in Old Navy and Express over the weekend trying on three or four versions of the same clothes, trying to find something that fit properly,
Admittedly, it's a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things, but I'd love to just walk into a store, grab my size and leave.
MonicaP at July 14, 2008 7:15 AM
Annoys the hell out of me. I'm 5'9" and thin, but not like I'm about to die of starvation, and I sometimes wear a size 0. I am not a size zero.
Amy Alkon at July 14, 2008 7:22 AM
Not just the construction but, hello, extra material. Of course, you have to pay more for more. They're being ridicous.
T's Grammy at July 14, 2008 8:23 AM
But the inverse is true of swim wear. The less material there is, the more it seems to cost. Must be the construction...
moreta at July 14, 2008 11:39 AM
Higher prices for larger sizes isn't just a Bra or women-only thing. It applies to guys as well, even those that don't wear bras.
Even when I was only "Tall" (as opposed to Big&Tall) the 3 or 2 Xl shirts that provided enough room for my shoulders almost always cost a little more than the XL/L. Same with pants. Longer inseam? Extra $. Longer inseam/extra waist? 2xExtra $.
Discrimination? I don't think so. It's just more material involved, more manufacturing, and sometimes (since I seem to more frequently see those who make me look anorexic) - those sizes don't sell as many so there's a markup to have the same profit as the more common sizes.
Though it does encourage shopping at outlet stores.
Jamie (SMS) at July 14, 2008 11:53 AM
That these women are idiots goes without saying. That these women are counter-productive idiots is just gravy. Most bra makers don't make the high sizes - probably because it's not terribly profitable. Extra engineering, fabric, and probably machinery makes it so you're really stuck for options if you've got bigguns. My friend carts around F cups, isn't fat, and is always bummed about having no choices, let alone having options that are pretty and not grannyish. Go on ladies, give M&S some more guff. They may just decide to give up on the big sizes altogether and then you'll really be bummed. You'll be tucking those babies into your waistband instead.
christina at July 14, 2008 1:35 PM
Look at the bright side: if we ALL grow bigguns the prices should drop : )
catspajamas at July 14, 2008 2:52 PM
Bra shopping just sucks. I have the opposite situation to Amy--flatter chested with broad shoulders, and the opposite assumptions are true: If you a B, you must be tiny all th seems to have trouble finding a bra that fits. grumble grumble.
Monica at July 15, 2008 8:23 AM
Believe it or not, I was flat-chested until sometime in high school. I think I wished a little too hard for boobs.
Amy Alkon at July 15, 2008 8:38 AM
The Lunaire Sportsbra is $60 in Toronto, so I guess I should protest too.
Chrissy at July 15, 2008 11:57 AM
At least they HAVE big bras!!!
I have to order mine from them! It's all about Fantasie of England.
It's odd, you'd think with all the fat people in America you'd be able to find a decent bra in the G and beyond range... I guess Americans settle for larger bands, smaller cups, even though Oprah tells us not to...

On a related note (?): BBC News report "Teenager finds bat asleep in bra"
"A teenager who thought movement in her underwear was caused by her vibrating mobile phone found a bat curled up asleep in her bra.
Abbie Hawkins, 19, of Norwich, had been wearing the bra for five hours when she plucked up the courage to investigate.
When she did, she found a baby bat in padding in her 34FF bra. The hotel receptionist said she was shocked but felt bad for removing the "cuddly" bat. "It looked cosy and comfortable and I was sorry for disturbing it," she said."
"I did not notice anything as I put my bra on. The night before I had had one or two drinks and I was getting ready quickly. The bra was in my drawer but it had been on the washing line the day before."

-Hi;) I do believe your blog feedback is very affirmative, thanks. I find the website that you have created has good information. I was reading one article earlier today and I have a question for you: efective home workout is one that does not use exercisers, takes little space, trains power, is great in time, and is flexible. We all face regular pressures with work, social commitments/ long commutes .. Our fitness bears the brunt of this shortage of time. What are the best workouts to do at home?
