Whistle Your Way To Jail
In yet another report of P.C. gone mad, a college in the UK is taking steps to protect construction workers from -- get this, college girls who whistle at them. It's like a piece from The Onion, only it's pathetic, not funny. Rupert Neate writes in The Telegraph:
A further education college is having to protect builders from wolf-whistling girls, in a reversal of traditional gender stereotypes.Officials at West Kent College in Tonbridge, Kent, sent an email to all pupils warning that the behaviour was "totally unacceptable", and saying any students caught harassing contractors would face disciplinary action.
...Meanwhile new laws could see wolf-whistling builders placed on the sex offenders register. The Sexual Offences (Scotland) Bill will create a new offence of "communicating indecently", punishable by up to 10 years in jail.
The legislation is intended to punish sexual harassment by text, emails and letters, but ministers also aim to include sexually explicit comments to strangers. It is expected that the law would only apply to persistent offenders.
At the moment, workmen who repeatedly make obscene comments to passers-by can be convicted of a breach of the peace.
I mean, come on...is whistling, a form of junior-high hazing by adults, really that damaging? And if you're a guy and a woman whistles at you...are you upset? As commenter John Robinson wrote on the site:
Oh, I'm glad I live in America, where college girls are still free to make suggestive and inappropriate remarks to workmen (or, indeed, to any man).
My personal favorite line from a guy on the street, from when I lived in NYC, of course:
"Never seen a body like that on a white woman!"
Whoops...I think I might've even said "thank you" instead of flagging down a cop to have him arrested.
thanks, lujlp

The males are dead. Long live the males.

I heard this Radio 4 the other day. They pointed out that the college hadn't actually received any complaints from the builders about this and all the builders I know (a small but measurable group of chaps) said they wouldn't be offended by such things.
Well actually they said "Cool!" and other such phrases about the concept of student girls wolf whistling them.
Yes we have a bunch of PC idiots in various parts of our bureaucracy. But the rest of us are doing just fine.
Simon, your friendly Brit.
PS If any ladies feel the need they can always wolf whistle me I won't be offended.

Since we're talking Europe, isn't that about what you'd get for murduring someone?
By the way, the only time a woman whistled at me, she followed up with, "Gee, I didn't know manatees lived on land..."

The father of a college roommate of mine used to say "In fifty years it will be cheaper to lock up the sane people and let the crazies run loose." That was about forty years ago. Looks like the Brits are about ten years ahead of schedule.

I'm not a college girl, but consider yourself whistled at, Simon! >_O
I consider it flattering when some construction worker gives me the eye and a whistle - who doesn't like to be admired? C'mon, even those women who pretend to find it offensive are secretly flattered, even if they won't admit it. And most, if not all, of the guys I've whistled at were appreciative. Why can't we just enjoy looking at one another, the way nature intended, without the uptight bitches getting their shorts in a twist about it all? But hey, it just occured to me, that the ones who are the most offended, are the ones who aren't getting whistled at! No wonder they're offended!

And this is why a guy can get fired for sexually harrasing the girl in cubilce 1 by flirting with the girl in cubicle 15
lujlp at July 23, 2008 6:19 AM
I categorically reject the politics of "me too" that lead to idiocy like this. It should not be illegal for anyone to whistle at anyone - you should take it as a compliment, or shrug it off. Male or female.
But I can't help feeling a tinge of "it sucks, don't it" when I see someone feeding feminists "equality," and noting that they immediately choke. In the words of Kathleen Parker, "what preciousness hath feminism wrought?"
But that feeling is quickly overshadowed by the sorrowful reflection that this only feeds the victim-identity-mamamamatheywuzmeantome-machine that brought us to this point.
On the other hand, perhaps this is the answer. Perhaps this is the best way for Atlas to Shrug - Okay, if thats the way you want it, thats the way we'll play. But I don't know. Not convinced one way or the other yet.
WolfmanMac at July 23, 2008 6:21 AM
Unbelievable!
The guys (and girls) making wolf-whistles and comments are (for the most part) just people, enthusing about other people and YAY SEX in general. Why do we demonize that?
I turned 40 last week and got a few great catcalls on my daily walks. Made me feel good! And when I got an "Awwww, yeah! How YOU doin'?" I always smiled and said, "Fine, thanks, how are you?" and lo and behold, the guys were nice humans who appreciated a friendly, conversational word, just like the rest of us.

More british stupidity. And having some guy let me know I'm attractive in pretty base terms can really perk up an otherwise crappy day. Come on, we all like to think we're hot! Even male construction workers (the poor tender dears!)
momof3 at July 23, 2008 7:55 AM
I love it when I get catcalls and hit on. It's flattering. The only time it gets annoying when some loser (you know the kind that are always writing Amy like the one in her new column how women should be less picky) won't take a polite turndown. Just 'cause I said no doesn't mean I wasn't flattered, just that I don't let strangers pick me up. I'll accept a date when we've met socially and there's some chemistry but a complete stranger, no. I'm not looking for Mr. Goodbar. I love the guys who drop a line like that, Amy, and move on like they weren't expecting anything for it, just letting you know your beauty's appreciated. My favorite to date was when I was wearing a new spring dress and sandals on a gorgeous day and this guy behind me passed by and said, "Great legs," and kept going. The compliment is so sincere done like that. And, boy, did I ever feel good about my legs!

And sell pheromone suppressors...
DaveG at July 23, 2008 9:57 AM
"we have no registered complaints on this issue..."
Biased journalism - Rupert didn't interview any of the sweaty workmen. If I were one of them, I'd be petitioning the college to send the girls to whistle at me. All creepiness aside, that would really make my day, as the ladies here have attested.
PS In Britain, how many summer days, on average, are truly hot?
DaveG at July 23, 2008 10:07 AM
I know it's fun to be ogled, because back when I was middle-aged I caught a young woman eyeing me with unfeigned desire, the way my wife did when we were newlyweds. When I tried to catch her eye to let her know I thought she was sexy too, I realized she was actually staring at the dish of chocolate almond ice cream I was holding.
Oh well. At least I know what it would feel like if it ever really happened.

Likewise, I used to see Ted Danson at the gym, and I used to stare at him in the parking lot. I think he assumed I was into him, but I really just had a thing for his car (the EV1).

> - who doesn't like to be admired?
Coddled girls. Girls who've been kept in aggressively-managed surroundings where all the behaviors of their fellow children/students/campers were completely controlled, so they've never encountered a human impulse in the wild. (And the men in thier cohort have never expressed one.) They're right to be scared....
Apparently one cluster of these ninnies survived to adulthood in Britain. (And --whaddya know-- they're working in higher education! What a surprise!) Enacting policies like this is their best effort to ensure that the creepy terror they feel in their own flesh lives on to torment another generation. (That's one of the biggest reasons people get into education, management, and even parenthood: To make the sure those who follow aren't more comfortable.)
It probably won't work. The women in Britain are going to be dealing with immigrants whose masculinity it completely unconstrained by this kind of stupidity. Those guys won't even know what this shit means, let alone know how to play along.
I looked up the school on Wikipedia. Here are my two favorite headings (contiguous):
| Notable alumni

| * The Countess of Wessex (Sophie
| Helen Mountbatten-Windsor, née
| Rhys-Jones)

| Content-control software

| The college computer administration
| maintains a content-control software
| system using Websense which blocks
| websites according to several categories,

That's how a culture blows its brains out.

Most stupid, PC laws are made clear, by a simple reversal of pronoun gender.
I've made this point, to opprobrious uproar. White, western men have been neutered by white, western women. One sees white women applying totally different standards to black men for example. Black men are very sexually aggressive, and this is interpreted as an attractive quality. When white men are sexually aggressive, it's interpreted as sexism.
Tha's why, except for a recent two month experiment suggested by Amy, I date foreign women only.
So, what you write is quite correct, and it works the other way too. In general, and with notable exceptions like Amy, American women are inferior companions.
Jeff at July 23, 2008 4:06 PM
Jeff, I've been coming more and more to the same conclusion - that white women are best left alone.
There is almost a kind of odd subjugation of Western men taking place, even if that's more metaphoric than literal.
Frogz at July 23, 2008 4:57 PM
Jeez, Frogz and Jeff, I really feel for you guys if that's the conclusion you've come to. I'm white, I'm with a white man, and this: Black men are very sexually aggressive, and this is interpreted as an attractive quality. When white men are sexually aggressive, it's interpreted as sexism. to me, is a totally alien concept. I don't see sexually aggresive black men as attractive, I find them pretty damn scary. Same with overly sexually aggressive white men. Approach me calmly, like a normal human being, and I'm apt to respond a helluva lot better than if you come on like a freakin' gang-banger. I just find that repulsive.
Flynne at July 24, 2008 6:42 AM
Flynne,
Repulsive is an excellent word for it. But you are not a representative sample of the population. A sizeable and growing portion of the Western Female population feels differently, and an even greater percentage don't see whats going on for their "I'M NOT LIKE THAT" blinders.
WolfmanMac at July 24, 2008 8:14 AM
The UK leads the world in PC Stupidity, that's for sure.
I think that it's amazing that a woman will be labled a sex offender for whistling at a construction worker, who will likely appreciate the attention, and she'll possibly be imprisoned for 10 years, but the courts will do nothing against women who make false allegations of domestic violence or rape.
Wow. What kind of mindset thinks that this is ok?
Gretz at July 24, 2008 8:02 PM
It wasn't quite whistling, but...
When I was in graduate school I was walking to school, wearing jeans, when a car full of high school girls drove up from behind.
As the car passed, one girl leaned out of her window and yelled at me, "What an ass!"
I took it as a compliment.
