Oh...By The Way, Senator...
From a New York Times article by David M. Herszenhorn:
As Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut and chairman of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, put it Friday morning on the ABC program "Good Morning America," the congressional leaders were told "that we're literally maybe days away from a complete meltdown of our financial system, with all the implications here at home and globally."
Hmmm, maybe it'll take them a while to get to the detailed complaint I sent them, the House Finance Committee and the Comptroller of The Currency about a week ago about my several-month investigation of Bank of America. The information I've uncovered about B of A's spectacularly lax security at teller windows has led me to believe that every consumer customer of the bank, certainly in California, but possibly in the nation, has been put in substantial danger of identity theft.
You didn't think I'd forgotten about B of A, now did you?
Thanks, Norm!

Amy - you might as well. With the acquisition of Merrill-Lynch, they're the biggest bank in America now.
And their practices are common, even among regional banks.
It's like they don't give a fuck about security at all. They make the websites more difficult to use, but anyone with a fake ID can hoover your bank account in person.

Oh, and one more thing - if Dodd had even the slightest shred of decency, he'd resign and commit seppuku in the Capitol rotunda for his complicity in the meltdown of the financial markets.

I'm just a lurker, but I read your column a lot, Amy. I moved recently to go to grad school (still in the same state), and I now need to open a new bank account (my bank is regional and there isn't a branch down here). I wanted to let you know that based on your experiences I'm not going to Bank of America! I'm thinking about Wells Fargo instead. Thanks for sharing your account and warning me of the dangers!
