Drinking Violets
Things in France are not always what they seem at first glance. In fact, this happens with some regularity. And it's often a good thing. Take, for example, this carton of apple juice Gregg bought me. Only it's not just apple juice. It's apple juice and violets. And it's actually very good. Just not a taste I was used to.

I was in Toulouse last summer, and they had violet everything! Violet liquor, violet vinegar, violet perfume, violet mustard, violet hard candy, violet syrup, candied violets, violet lotion, violet ice crea violet soup... bref, all things violet.
It was great! Especially the ice cream!

Can you describe the taste of the ice cream? Best I can do the apple juice, the violets took the edge off the apple, and gave the juice a slightly perfume-y taste, but not in a bad way. Tasted like, I'm embarrassed to put it this way, more sophisticated apple juice.

A friend described a trip to Australia where she enjoyed some Eucalyptus ice cream.
I asked "What was it like?"
She replied, without enthusiam, "Vick's."

The high-end smoke shops and hipster toy stores in Portland, carry violet gum and pastilles (come to think of it, the only damned store in Portland where I could find un-roasted coffee did too - unfortunately the coffee was too expensive). The six year old and I loved to pick up a tin of the pastilles now and then, but they were rather prohibitively priced, at $2.89 per. (the gum was $1.25 for a five stick pack!?!)
I'm not sure about apple juice, but I would love to try it with rosehips....

When he was living in San Diego, my brother took my (then 3)six year old and I to a nearby town that was fucking nuts about the garlic. There was a store that sold garlic ice cream and a ice cream parlor that also carried it. (I was happy to go home with a full quart of garlic oil)
I know there's a name for the flavoring, but I forget what it's called. PeptoBismol tastes kind of like it. Anyhow, a dear friend of mine once decided to use that flavor for a batch of ice cream she made. Those of us who endured a scoop of that were pretty much lacking enthusiasm too.

The ice cream had sort of a fruity edge to it that is hard to describe... perfumey, too, but like a fruity perfume. Not quite citrus, but there was a slight acidic undertone that went well with the sugar and cream.
It tasted the way a fruity perfume OUGHT to taste.

The apple juice sounds fine, but the ice cream sounds great!
I'm a bit of an ice cream nut. My favorite that I can do here in the States is to add a little very good Balsamic vinegar to a good quality real vanilla ice cream and then stir. It has complexity like a good wine, but yet completely different context.

The ice cream IS great... Rose ice cream might be my favorite, though. Lavendar is pretty good as well. Floral ice creams are easy to find in little sidewalk parlors, the kind that have one of those freezers out front, in France.
Speaking of food, but off topic... I have a request! Amy, you mentioned you eat a lot of veggies with olive oil to keep your figure trim. Would you mind posting a few recipes so your fat fans can share your wisdom?

nearby town that was fucking nuts about the garlic. -- Are you talking about Gilroy, CA?
Pepto Bismol tastes kind of like it.
I'm pretty sure the flavor of Pepto Bismol is Teaberry. They used to have that as a flavor of gum. Yeecckkk!

AHHHH Got to love South Korea. Let see what they have for some strange tastes -
ALOE juice - Nice sweet (because the Koreans add alot of sugar) but the little jelly bits of ALOE can be a weird.
FLOWER gum - Koreans have a whole weird bunch of gum tastes not like the Americans and Canadians with ours mints and a little bit of cinnamon. They have lots of fruit gum. Flower gum tastes like a little tiny whiff of aerosol odor freshener. Ok but an acquired taste
PINE soda - like drinking a semi flat 7-up with a splash of Lysol. Still pretty good.
GREEN-TEA chocolate, ice cream, bread, cookies. Hey understand green tea is healthy and works ok in a shampoo but do you need to put it in every food. Chocolate is gross, Ice Cream is ok not much flavor, bread is still bread but green and the cookies also just green and gross.

I hate green tea. It's one food fad I'm not following. You know what else is gross in chocolate? Curry.

While going to Japan for a short visit I took a look at the Korean Side Duty Free. I had heard about it but I could not actually beleive it.
Kimchi-Chocolate.
They had some other chocolates like ginseng and red pepper paste. BUT KIMCHI and chocolate. Yes the taste of cabbage, red peppers with chocolate.
