Something In The Water
Over there in Paris, turning all the trees on the roof of Centre Georges Pompidou bright red.
Merry Christmas to all of you who are celebrating it. Yes, I'm an atheist but I'm not somehow injured or philosophically compromised by making that wish. If you're celebrating Satan's birthday or something, I'll wish you happy that, too, and many, many more.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all out there.
We are set up for a series of 1 foot snowfall storms as far out as the weathermen can see!

Happy holidays all.

it's not for naught that many, many people celebrate the passing of the old and the advent of the new... however you say it, I wish you all the best blessings of a new year. For myself I also wish you all a Merry Christmas, for He did not come only for those who believe...

December 25 is also Sir Isaac Newton's birthday. Our son and daughter-in-law are coming, and since they're both declared atheists and my wife and I are not religious either (lost faith separately before we met), we thought we might follow the Skeptics Society example and celebrate Newtonmas.
Happy rationality, everyone!
On the other hand, if you have religious faith (or just celebrate for the hell of it), Merry Christmas/Happy Hannukah/Gleeful Kwanzaa, and a prosperous New Year.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone! I'll always be fond of this time despite my lack of religion and all the commercialism and other stupidity that tends to arise. Boil it down to the basics and you've got families and loved ones gathering, warm feasts, twinkling lights, and hope for a new year, all in the darkest days of winter. What's not to love?

Wishing everyone a very cool Yule and a properous New Year!
Love to all,

Bah Humbug! Fuckers! (Says the bitter bachelor.)
Y'know, this has been a shitty year for a whole lot of people... Including people who never wanted to take advantage of anyone else's generosity or naiveté.
The paradox is that it's times like these that we need to be most generous with charities. I know this hurts and hurts badly, but Earth is the planet we've chosen to live on.
Perhaps your finances are truly stretched to the limit and you just don't see any room in the budget for full tithing.
Having done as much as I can for '08 in that regard, I needed another way to kick some value out into the world. So after a yearlong surcease following a dental procedure, I've been donating platelets again. It's safe, it takes two hours (tops), they'll often tempt you with (gift) raffles and DVD movies during the donation, and certificates for burgers and shows to take home afterward. And it's essentially painless.
There's a needle involved. (As I get older, it becomes ever-more difficult to be patient with people who are afraid of needles. But that's just me.) Understand that at some point today, or probably tomorrow, you are going to stub your toe, or have a paper cut, or feel some miscellaneous pain in an extremity. It won't mean anything, and you'll forget it happened within forty seconds....
And that's how much pain we're talking about. It'll be over before you could recite the first line of your favorite pop song. If you've ever had a loved one in the hospital, you probably understand that the progress of health care is all about these minor trespasses. Just as you want your your aging uncle with cancer not to whine about it when he gets a new bottle of chemo, you should ask yourself to withstand this intrusion without whining.
If-
• You're not into weird sex or illicit drugs with needles
• You take pride in being a smart person who understands how things work, and can read (or verbally) answer a short (private, fully anonymized) page of questions
• You take pride in being emotionally sophisticated, and aware of how other people's lives work
• And you are a grown human being
...Then you really ought to do this. Or give whole blood, which is just as easy but can be done less frequently.
People, karma is a sober, attentive banker.
Send an email and I'll find a donation site near your home or answer any questions, -ANY QUESTIONS- about how this works and what it means to people.
Merry Christmas.
Crid [cridcridatgmail] at December 24, 2008 2:55 PM
Good comment Crid- I promise I will donate before my birthday in a couple weeks! (It's also supposed to be healthy for men as we don't lose blood as we were designed to, and I've heard it helps to reduce the buildup of iron in the bloodstream.)
Eric at December 24, 2008 4:09 PM
Dude, I'll be fifty soon. If a young woman in an attractive uniform wants a liquid from my body, any liquid, then she gets it, no questions asked.
Bah humbug!
Merry Christmas!
Crid at December 24, 2008 9:18 PM
Stills. A typical narrative.
I mean to turn this into the official Advice Goddess Blog Commenter's Charity for Christmas 2008.
Seriously, if anybody actually goes ahead and does this, or just wants to do this, shoot me an email.

"Yes, I'm an atheist but I'm not somehow injured or philosophically compromised by making that wish." You're funny, I mean it's a good photo but the text you wrote in simply bizarre.

It's just something I think at the Christmas season, in response to all the hysteria and made-up hysteria about saying Merry Christmas. I'll wish you happy whatever you're celebrating, as long as it isn't the death of everyone who doesn't believe as you do (in the case of too many followers of the so-called "Religion of Peace").
