Famously Stupid
The 40 dumbest quotes of 2008, by John Hawkins. A few samples:
5) "White people shouldn't be allowed to vote. It's for the good of the country and for those who're bitter for a reason and armed because they're scared." -- Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Jonathan Valania26) "We'll be eight degrees hotter in ten, not ten but 30 or 40 years and basically none of the crops will grow. Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals." -- Ted Turner
I typically don't post on climate change because climatology is very complicated, and I don't understand it. I guarantee you that Ted Turner and the girl in my French class who does flower arrangments don't understand it, either, but somehow, that doesn't stop them from mouthing off about it.
38) "Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don't care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks."
--Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings on Sarah Palin40) "Winnie the Pooh seems to me to be a fundamental text on national security." -- Obama foreign policy adviser Richard Danzig
36) "Many spiritually advanced people I know (not coweringly religious, mind you, but deeply spiritual) identify Obama as a Lightworker, that rare kind of attuned being who has the ability to lead us not merely to new foreign policies or health care plans or whatnot, but who can actually help usher in a new way of being on the planet, of relating and connecting and engaging with this bizarre earthly experiment. These kinds of people actually help us evolve. They are philosophers and peacemakers of a very high order, and they speak not just to reason or emotion, but to the soul." -- Mark Morford
33) "I've abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system." -- George Bush
Um, you were the biggest big Democrat this country's had in office since FDR.
28) "(Sarah Palin's) greatest hypocrisy is in her pretense that she is a woman." -- Wendy Doniger at the Washington Post
I didn't think she was qualified to be vice-president, but she's quite the woman, and, I'm guessing, a lot hotter than you are, Wendy. (Sadly, it seems the bikini pictures were a hoax.)
22) "'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. 'Gangsta rap' didn't exist." -- Alicia Keys11) "Please understand what you are looking at when you look at Sarah "Evita" Palin. You are looking at the designated muse of the coming American police state."
--Naomi Wolf
Good god. I'm scared to read the whole list. And these people are paid to tell us what they think!

I don't understand why these people are paid to tell us what they think. Oh wait, I do. The sheeple do it.

Awww, no. He's not one of ours. the Republican Party's gotta own their mistakes. If he had managed to do even one thing right, they'd be taking credit.
Republicans made a choice, and now they're the party of W, Palin, and Joe the Plumber. If you're going to aim for the Lowest Common Denominator in elections, don't be surprised when you get it.
franko at January 7, 2009 12:14 PM
Franko - Bush gave your guys everything they wanted. They wanted the Medicare part D, they got it. Kennedy wrote the education bill.
Bush is ALL YOURS PAL. Bush is not and has never been a conservative. And too much of the Republican party followed him over the cliff.
Comparing Palin to Bush in terms of conservatism is like comparing apples to bricks.
brian at January 7, 2009 12:23 PM
I'm not a Republican for two reasons: 1. I'm a small government fiscal conservative, and 2. The Republicans are too busy pandering to the religious nutters. Part of the reason they fail at being what they profess to be: the party of small government and fiscal conservatism. They're anything but.
And Naomi Wolf is truly an idiot. Such a big idiot it seems like she must work at it. Squint at anything she writes or says and you can see the fumes of moronism wafting off of it.
Amy Alkon at January 7, 2009 1:04 PM
Great list! That Richard Danzig quote stands out, though. I'm still wondering what kind of drugs he was on that day. Or maybe he mistook himself for Glenn Danzig?
Cousin Dave at January 7, 2009 1:20 PM
Did everyone hear Joe the Plumber is now going to be Joe the Foreign War Correspondent?
>> Bush is not and has never been a conservative.
Interesting. He sure quacked like a conservative.

The problem is, there's been a muddying of the term. There's a big difference between a fiscal conservative (aka "classically liberal") and a religious nutter conservative (aka a "social conservative").
Amy Alkon at January 7, 2009 1:50 PM
Although Bush is clearly a fiscal liberal, I'm afraid Republicans will have to assume the responsibility for Bush. Conservatives need to make it clear that although Bush is a Republican, he is not a Conservative and that this type of individual belonging to the Republican party is unacceptable. If not, we will have the repeat of the ridiculous myth that the 30's depression was caused by Hoover's adherence to Conservative laissez-faire principles when he clearly was a "progressive" (he threw everything including the kitchen sink at the economy). If conservatives defend Bush simply because he was a Republican than we will have to deal with decades of people being told Bush's conservative ideas and the implementation of these ideas got us into the mess we're in.
So Franko, he's not one of yours officially, but he implemented all your economic policies and look where that got us.
Charles at January 7, 2009 2:00 PM
Eric -
He did? Not from anything I ever heard. As soon as he said "compassionate conservatism" my bullshit detector redlined.
I knew he was a liberal from the word go. Not a conservative bone in his body.
Of course, he was more of a liberal in the JFK mold than in the Barack Obama mold, but still a liberal.
Anyone who believes that government is a valid solution to social problems is ipso facto liberal. That includes so-called "social conservatives" who want to ban anything.
brian at January 7, 2009 2:01 PM
Great list! The only one that didn't belong there was the Kathleen Parker quote. I think she was making a valid point, although poorly worded.
Karen at January 7, 2009 2:23 PM
Brian, you lump so many kinds of people under the term "liberal" that you give it a whole new meaning: "persons whose political policies or opinions Brian dislikes."
Axman at January 7, 2009 2:25 PM
I put Conservative Republicans in the same category as Bigfoot. Lots of gullible people believe in both.
Eric at January 7, 2009 2:41 PM
If Sean Penn can be a foreign correspondent, why not Joe the Plumber?
KateC at January 7, 2009 2:51 PM
Hmm. "Conservative". "Liberal".
Let us not forget the "idiot" who thinks that the President handles Federal money.
Radwaste at January 7, 2009 3:10 PM
No, Axman, I'm quite certain that you've created that categorization all on your own.
Mine is as it ever has been. Anyone who does not accept the truth of Ronaldus Magnus is not a conservative. That truth is this: "Government is not the solution. Government is the problem."
George Walker Bush did not believe that. I submit as evidence his belief that the government could fix the school system if only it would get more money and power. NCLB worked out well, didn't it? He also pushed for the expansion of Medicare.
Those are both positions taken by the Modern American Liberal. Of course, Thomas Jefferson would not recognize our use of the words "liberal" and "conservative" as they relate to politics today, but there it is.
In the 2008 Presidential Selection, there were no candidates on offer from any party. There were liberals, communists, socialists, fascists, lunatics and imbeciles. But no conservatives.

People should be as famous as they wanna be. You can always ignore 'em.
Also, it's not that Alicia Keys is right, but her resentment is righteous.

Comparing Palin to Bush in terms of conservatism is like comparing apples to bricks.
Well, they are both red.
I submit as evidence his belief that the government could fix the school system if only it would get more money and power.
He didnt belive that, he SAID he belived it
NCLB worked out well, didn't it?
It did exactly what it was designed to do, hasten the death of literate reasoning americans.
People tell me I'm parinod but I swear people in power are trying to return us to feudalism and turn us into serfs
PS I agree with 7&17
lujlp at January 7, 2009 5:46 PM
These just either make me shake my head at the stupidity or open my mouth in horror and shock.
I just love these leaps of logic and rhetoric.
Like thus:
Palin uses guns. Most people who use guns use it to kill people or even animals. Thus people who use guns will kill people (whoops forgot about those animals). People who like guns are usually Conservative. Conservative people do not agree with (liberal) Jewish doctrine or black viticrat dogma. Since they do not agree they do not like said people. So since said conservative people use guns, they use guns to kill, they will kill all blacks and Jews.
Ahh - know I get it.
Another one with fantastic logic.
Global Warming is the world getting hotter. Deserts are hot! Hey the world is going to turn into a desert (completetly forgetting about rain and water). No plants grow in the desert. Food comes from plants! So we will have no food!
Oh my god Panic!
Or it is just plain hate! Of course they go ME! hate speech - NO not me!
Or the stupidist logic of all. I am a woman! I know what a woman is? All women are just like me! Thus All women must think like me! I do not like this person! She does not THINK like me so must be something else. She is not a woman because I know what a woman is.
Same bloody argument used against black conservatives.
The amazing about these comments are they came from published authors, radio commentators, University graduates.... People who you think could put together a sensible conclusion, thought or valid opinion.
One more for the Road!
Amy (The Advice Goddess)is a Nazi and she will kill all blacks and Jewish people!
Amy does not want children. Thus people who do not want children must hate children. People who hate want to get rid of what they hate. How do you get rid of children - you KILL them. So Amy is baby killing Monster. Who else killed babies hmmmm the NAZIs. So AMY must be a Nazi! Nazis do not like Jewish people (whoops lets ignore the fact that she is Jewish). Since she hates Jews she is racist so she must also hates blacks, too. Once again since people do not like something they want to get rid of it how do you get rid of blacks! KILL EM! SO thus AMY is a NAZI!
God I could continue with this shash. I wish people would use basic arguements witht thier opinions.
PS for those MORONS out there who did not read my post. I LOVE AMY she is not a NAZI. She is the ADVICE GODDESS!

Stoopid people shouldn't be allowed to vote, neither should they be allowed to write for Newspapers.

Before 24x7 news channels and the Interweb (a series of tubes), we had fewer gaffes. Fewer voices clamoring to be heard. Fewer news hours in which to blurt out something wildly inappropriate in the desperate desire to be noticed.
But today, even someone in the carpet reclaiming business can reach out to the world and say "Hey! Look at me! I can fit this billiard ball in my mouth!".
Life am good.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at January 9, 2009 1:47 PM
I've got one for this year's list already:
"We applaud the folks at City Crab and Seafood for their compassionate decision to allow this noble old-timer to live out his days in freedom and peace," said PETA President"
They were talking about a restaurant releasing a huge lobster back into the wild. Where, you know, there's no predators or anything. Just peace and kumbaya.
