Male 44 now... 1/2age + 7 yr on the low side, + 10 yr on the high side.

Male 36.... 38 on the high side, 26 on the low. I would still like to have kids. 38 is pushing the edge already.

Female 44, 55 on the high side, 38 on the low.

I'm a man.
When I did the online dating thing I was 49 and my cutoff age was 50.
Bonus fun fact: I think 39 was the lowest I looked for.

Male, age 22. If I were to use online dating, I'd go no lower than 21, probably not much higher than 32. The low mark being more important than the high one.

When I did online dating, I was 29, and my upper age limit was 40. The youngest was 26, although I generally prefer men my age or slightly older.
MonicaP at February 9, 2009 6:51 PM
26. my cut-off is 40. My lower is 24. Granted, there are exceptions. Thereafter, it's a balancing test.

Male, 39 now, but not currently single.
Last time I looked online I was 38 and would have cutoff my online searches at 30 or 35 depending on the site. In the off-line world my cutoff was more like 45.

Why is that, Shawn (or anybody)? Why is the off-line cutoff higher than the online?

Male, 32 now. Did on-line dating around 30. I was looking for someone between 21 and 40.
Toubrouk at February 9, 2009 10:51 PM
Female, 32. When I tried it out, I went for 5 years younger or older. Did make exceptions for older than that but it depended on how I 'connected' with the person.

Male, 44. I don't know if online dating existed when I was single, so I really don't know much about it. Having said that, I guess I'd go with 35 on the low side and maybe 50 on the high side. I wouldn't say those limits are rigid, though.

Female 38- My cut-offs would be 21, if he has some intellect; 55, if he is still active. I'm in my sexual prime, so that's important.

I'd guess b/c he thinks people are probably lying about their age in their online profiles.

Female, did online dating thing when I was 35, and was looking for men up to 5 years younger and 12 years older. In practice, I stretched it to include guys 7 or 8 years younger, and 15 or so years older, when the individual guy seemed promising.
By the way, Shawn -- I automatically ruled out any guy who was looking for an age range that excluded women his own age, even though the age range he was looking for might include me. I assume a guy who ONLY wants younger women, to the exclusion of women his own age, is juvenile and shallow, and therefore a waste of my time. I'll bet I'm not the only woman who thinks that way.
Since in practice you actually DO date women your own age and older, if you ever do online dating again, you might consider extending the age range on your profile to match. Otherwise, you might be turning off some women you'd be interested in -- the young'ns as well as the old'ns! Weed out the women that are unattractive to you by their photos and interests, not by an arbitrary age limit you wouldn't even apply in real life.

I'm 32.
The oldest age I'll search for is 48. The youngest is 37.
I used to have a far higher 'older' limit-25 years older was fine, but the older I get, the older people who are 25 years older than myself look :)
My date on Sat. night was 52. He's Indian though, so he looks far younger. The majority of my exes are 15-20 years older than myself, I have no idea how I'm going to find dates when I'm in my seventies, hehe.

Whoops-
Forgot to answer Amy's question of why I'll date 'older' in real life!
When I meet someone in the real world, I can tell whether or not I'm attracted to them immediately. Too many people on online dating sites use pictures that are 3+ years old. If I see a man online and think, "Well, he looks great for his age!",there's no guarantee that he actually does look like that.

I did on-line and phone dating over a 3 year period, when I was 46-49 (just turned 50 on the weekend!). I'm a female, and my range for a man was between 21 and 55.
I figured out pretty quickly that age didn't have much to do with emotional maturity, responsibility, or physical fitness, so I looked at each man as an individual. I'm also at my sexual prime, so I need a guy who has taken very good care of his body and is very energetic. I found that the guys in their 50s generally hadn't taken care of themselves (there were exceptions of course), and were not in the same headspace as me. They were either looking to settle down very quickly, or play the field like a teenager. That's just a bit of a general trend, and like I said before, I looked at each guy as an individual.
I also wanted someone tall, unmarried, and employed, which comes in all age ranges too.
I never went for the daddy figure, and always went for younger guys my whole life, because I like to play and have fun, and don't feel like I need guidance.
In the face to face world, where nobody knows how old you are, I get hit on by guys from 20s up to 70s. Last weekend this guy chatted me up at a bar and I asked him out of curiosity how old he was. I figured he was 49, but he said he was 39, so who knows what was true. I have no idea how old he thought I was.

I worked for one of the big online dating sites for nearly ten years. I read hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of ads. My observation is that it's largely contingent on what type of relationship they're looking for. Men looking for NSA are reasonably flexible, since it's "just sex". Though they *ask* for the moon and stars, they'll accept a black hole (baDUMbump!). Men looking for fetish types (BDSM, etc) are reasonably flexible, since the D/s aspect can outweigh the physical attraction. Men who are *truly* looking for LTR are reasonably flexible, since love is often surprising, though they tend to have ranges that resemble "up to 15 years younger, to 2 years older". It's the "hey, we'll see what happens" men who are most demanding. They tend to be the guys who think that a relationship is founded on what they perceive they "deserve" - which is, naturally, an 18 year old nymphomaniac supermodel with natural DDs and a trust fund.
Women looking for NSA tend to be a bit more particular than the men (no surprise, as they're the in-demand sex) and want the same age to a bit older, with a handful who want much older - ie, Daddy and/or Sugar Daddy. Women looking for LTR usually want slightly younger to 5-10 years older. And "we'll see" women slightly younger to maybe 5 years older.
Different age brackets also have different ranges, but the basic overall gist is this.
Oh, and the bigger a guy claims his Mighty Member to be, the more arrogant his ad is, and the worse his spelling.
(just for fun, check out whywomenhatemen.blogspot.com - it's by a man, so fellas, don't get bent out of shape)

Just got back from a winter vacation and I'm not sure if you are still looking for input, but here goes anyway.
I was looking online when I was 51-53. My range was 5 years younger to 3 years older. I met my wife through a dating site three years ago and she is 3 years younger than me.
