Racism Comes In All Shades
More skin color stuff in the news. The model Iman wasn't black enough for some, according to an AFP story about her Sunday interview in Parade:
Iman, 53, also told Parade that her rise to catwalk superstardom did not free her from racism."You suddenly represent a whole race, and that race goes, "Well, that person does not represent our ideals of beauty." For lack of a better term, it becomes what it was like during slavery," she said.
"One had the field nigger and the house nigger. There was this notion that I was chosen by white fashion editors to be better than the rest, which I am not. I did not like being thought of as the house nigger."

I bet there's not really a lacking... She could probably find "a better term" if she thought about it for a moment.

We can't appease everyone!
If everyone would work hard and take advantage of the American Dream we would have a lot less people whining about petty stuff.

That's a bit different than the version I read in Parade this morning. There was no mention of slavery or of field and house niggers.

"it becomes what it was like during slavery"
So it was just like it was during slavery, except that it was nothing like it.

There was also a line cut out of the article about Gregg in the print version of the LA Times (vis a vis the online version). Not surprised that would get cut from Parade. AFP probably got an advance look at it -- as did Gregg at the LAT piece, because it was formerly sold elsewhere.
I was actually interviewed for a piece in today's paper and then not mentioned by name, although my thoughts were used, which pisses me the hell off. I'm waiting for an explanation from the reporter. Perhaps she had all of the exact same thoughts I did. It is possible -- but seems rather unlikely. I'm hoping an editor did this, because it is not responsible or ethical journalism to interview somebody, paraphrase their thoughts in your own words, and not credit them for them.
