Hat Crime
That more people -- including me -- don't wear them more often. Here I am in one of my favorite Amy Downs hats, enroute to Virginia Postrel's DeepGlamour hats party, where you can see a closer shot of that hat.
I love, love, love Amy Downs' hats. If you're up in the Pacific Northwest, go visit her shop. I'm hoping she's still doing the glam hats, now that she's moved from the Lower East Side (where I bought her hats in my Advice Ladies days) to flannel shirt territory.
On a related note, another thing I do is wear evening dresses for everyday wear. I buy them on sale -- 75 percent off, around now or at off times -- so they end up costing less than regular clothes a lot of the time. We shot a photo on the beach last night for Psychology Today, which is serializing my book (yay!) and I wore an evening dress I got for $19.99. I just love that!
P.S. The dress I'm wearing here isn't an evening dress, but it is by some Italian designer -- got it years ago for $9.99 on sale at Daffy's on 18th Street in New York. If your style doesn't change with the trends, you don't have to buy the trendy crap; you can just buy what looks great on you when it's deep-discounted!
P.P.S. Sorry boys who aren't homosexual. This has been a fashion moment. It won't happen again -- for a while, anyway.

Congratulations on the serialization by Psych Today - and great hat!

Wait, what? As long as fashion means "accentuating the assets of the female form", I'm good.
If you can get more chicks to dress hot instead of wearing sweatpants and flip-flops everywhere, you're doing the heterosexual males of the world a service!
brian at August 24, 2009 7:43 AM
So the party was called "You're the Top". What I have to know is, did they play the Cole Porter song of the same name at the party, with the *original* lyrics? The song was originally a paean to Mussolini, with lyrics that started:
You're the top, you're the great Houdini.
You're the top, you're Mussolini.
At a party with a bunch of libertarians, that would have been a scream!

I love hats. I can't really pull them off, though.

I used to wear a cowboy hat when I had horses, but I mostly wore it when riding, and sometimes I'd wear it to the bar. That one was black felt; right now I have a blue, kind-of open-weave cowboy hat, very light; I wear it on really hot days when I don't want my scalp to burn, and when I'm in the garden. Keeps the bugs outta my hair! o.O
Oh and Amy, mucho congo-rats on the Psych Today gig, that's awesome!

Mazel Tov on the serialization!
... and we Orthodox Jews never gave up on hats. Yes, they are great (and in sunny areas, a necessity).

No, no, no, be my guest! I like it when we get away from politics and economics for a little while.
So, if you're swapping lids with Virginia Postral, et al, is that an example of that cap-and-trade I keep hearing about (take that, Crid, for lame joke of the day!)?

I'll second THAT.

I love hats, but the big ones don't work for me. I have to wear short-chick hats or risk looking like a mushroom.
MonicaP at August 24, 2009 9:44 AM
Thanks, Ben-David.
Gregg wears hats, too. And they're actually worn (okay, sometimes drenched and sat-on), like he actually wears them, which he does. Hate that look of a man in a hat that looks like a costume, rather than a part of who he is.
I get his -- and a few of mine -- at http://www.fedoraprimo.com/ in Santa Monica, by where I get my mail. The guy who owns the place, Frank, is great, and will help you pick a hat that doesn't make you look like an ass.

Neat site. I guess I've been wearing a Trilby with my overcoat in the winter, but I never knew what it was called. On the other hand, my fashion sense is pretty much limited to wearing what the men's store tells me to. I'll send the link to Not-So-Old RPM Mama so she knows what to get me for Christmas.
"Ohhhhhhh...that was bad!" -- Ms Alkon, I've been inflicting myself on anyone within earshot for over four decades now. I blame my Daddy.

More congrats on the Psychology Today serial deal, Amy (and on the sublime hat - the poise and the pose!).
Just thinking off the top of my head (not trying to pun there), that your agent could do worse than look to the UK for further serial deals IF the book has a Euro imprint?
The Mail UK pays very well indeed for excerpt rights AND your book suits its A/B readership profile - a witty, sexy, mouthy yank sounding off about modern manners would be catnip for its Lifestyle sections? (Either for the daily paper or the Sunday color mag?)

I wish I had pale skin! But I'm olivey, so I can't do all black, if I wear black I have to throw in a color to make up for it, lest I look sallow.

I adore big hats, and have several I'e bought, as well as several I inherited from my beloved Nana. The kookier the better! My absolute favorites are the ones my Nana used to wear to the derby every year. Sometimes, I'll take one out and wear it around town. It never fails to surprises my neighbors. They all think I'm reserved and quite.
I also always wear a large floppy hat when I'm outside. It makes me look ridiculous, but it's my favorite hat and it does protect my face from the sun. On especially windy days, I'll use a colorful knitting needle as a hat pin. My hats allow me to express my hidden wild side. :) :)

Mixed feelings on Amy's hat. Striking visual, but I just can't see her under there.

Two ss's looks cool, though. Everyone acknowledges this.

Love the hat. I wear one every single day as I walk to and from work and have the lovely whiter-shade-of-pale skin that goes with being a redhead. I adore Wallaroo hats for summer (wad them up in your purse or suitcase and they spring right back into shape).

Hip-hip-hooray for Psychology Today!
And speaking of accentuating the female form, whatever happened to the slinky dress you wore in this post?:

Slender woman, big hat, cool look.
Had to give up reading Psychology Today. Every ad and about 75% of articles were for the female audience only: frustrated girl vs clueless, mute guy. Granted, the last issue I read was a year ago but I wasn't motivated to go back.
Anyway, nice hat!

I'm inspired to go scout out dresses now. I'm broke, but hey, payday is in less than a week! So if I find them now, I can go get them then.
I'm off to look for dresses!
Don't think it can be an evening gown though, I teach, and have to dress pretty conservatively or as a hippy. Those seem to be the teacher options. I have long hair so can pull off hippy pretty well.
