Tough Times Naked
I met smart, beautiful, insightful Amazon woman Susannah Breslin when we were both on Candace Bergen's former talk show together, and whenever I read her work, I'm always impressed, and remind myself to seek out her writing more often. She pulls together an always very readable piece of prose, but, even better, she says and thinks things other writers couldn't get near if they tried.
Just found this link through Instapundit -- to her piece on recession in the porn industry. Apparently, some magazine didn't find it quite the upbeat nudie industry piece they were hoping for and didn't publish it (idiots!), so she published it herself on the web.
An excerpt:
Three years ago, Powers shot four to five movies a week. Nowadays, he's lucky if he shoots two a week. Like many other businessmen, he's been forced to cut corners. Ergo, the "life support system for a penis" of yesteryear has been replaced by the lower maintenance RoboCock."We got rid of the male talent!" Powers crows, triumphant. He enumerates the benefits of working with an animatronic phallus on one hand. "They don't complain as much. They're always hard. You don't have to feed them." Of course, the 21st century woodsman does have one drawback. "They've always got bolts falling off," Powers admits with a shrug.

Ok.
But how does RoboCock give you the "money shot"? Vinegar and baking soda?

Oh man. Was that a depressing lunch time read. It did supply the quote of the day though.
“Anal sex is, like, a very emotional thing.”

To keep bolts from falling off, just tighten the nuts.

I am in IT and we are being outsourced to India. Now the male porn dudes are being outsourced by a machine. Who is going to be left to actually pay for obamacare?

All the best porn is on VHS tape. Sometimes there's even a suggestion of a plot.

Remember the film critic who used to critique pornos? "At first the story was slow, then it got interesting, and I became more interested, and then I became really interested, and then I became REALLY interested. Then I lost interest." He would repeat this three or four times for each movie.
I can't get this article out of my brain. I just don't buy the "I couldn't get a regular job so I'll let them anally violate me with a machine" excuse. And the whole omelette thing has me off eggs for the rest of the year. Where's Lena when you need her?

Don't miss Grace Undressed, then.
Seriously.

I wonder how much of this is the broader economic recession and how much is the fact that porn fans no longer have to pay even for video content? Plus the explosion of amateur stuff. I think the economics of that industry are being changed as fundamentally as they are in the newspaper biz.

How many new daily newspapers have been launched in the past 2 years? How many daily papers do you know of that aren't hemorrhaging money, in threat of bankruptcy if they haven't declared it already, or already out of business?
Regardless of what Breslin claims, I don't believe that the porn industry is in the same state. I've visited or bought memberships in a lot of porn pay sites over the past 10 years. All of the sites I liked are still in business. I won't hazard a guess as to how many new pay sites have been launched over the past two years, but there are certainly plenty of them. Google "thebestporn dot com" if you want to get a good idea of what's out there (NSFW). If porn for pay is a desperate, dying business, why are so many new people getting into it looking to make money?
Everything Breslin writes about is out there, for people who want it. But implying that this is THE face of porn, and the only way to make money in it, seems like a severe distortion to me.

Let me put it this way. Amy has written for both Hustler & the LA Times. Which of those two do you think will be the first to go out of business? Sam Zell already declared bankruptcy for the Tribune Company a year ago. I haven't heard any news that Larry Flynt is about to do the same. Not saying the threat from amateur stuff & piracy isn't real, just that the business isn't doomed yet.

Since when did Videotaped porn movies = "The porn industry".
Yeah, it's not like the old days where you made up some script in 10 minutes and got two people to screw on camera.
You'll have to put more effort into it to put yourself ahead of the competition AND you'll be making less money.
His whining of "Content" is very illuminating as to why he's having problems.
So was the complete lack of security on the set. Sheesh.

"I’ve come to understand that porn is a funhouse mirror reflecting whatever we want to see in it.
If people didn’t want it, it wouldn’t be made."

An interesting read!
I couldn't decide if she liked it, or didn't. The article felt as hollow & glassy eyed as the porn actors themselves. Neither for it or against, just What it is.

Anyway, I don't think I believe them all crowing "it's for the money," either. If they didn't need a certain amount of attention, they would find other ways to handle it. I couldn't imagine a mortgage payment high enough, that I'd agree to be on camera, getting stuffed by a dildo machine.
I'll toast to their memories next time I watch a pron. @cheers@
