I Got My Ph.D.
It was early Thursday morning in Vegas, at the Riviera, where I'm attending the evolutionary psychology preconference.
Had I known all I'd have to do was check into a Vegas hotel, I would have done this much sooner.
Twins researcher Nancy Segal joked that I could tell people I got my doctorate at the University of Riviera (URLV).

Is there a doctor in the house?

Just be sure you pick a side in whatever is the theoretical conflict du jour. As long a you pass the comprehension test, you're set. Given the pieces I've read where you have connected data and theories to real life, you seem to have a pretty strong foundation. Nobody would doubt the Ph.D., Which is why it's not needed.

Dr. Alkon, can you write me a scrip for ... What?
Oh.
Bugger.

Well, you know it really ain't true that you can get a doctorate from UNLV just by driving through town.
You do gotta slow down and open the window so they can fling that diploma in there.
Yes, an oldie but a (not very) goodie.

What is a "preconference?" Like pre-planning planning sessions? Maybe we pre before we pare?
Lordy.
"Cooperation is the foundation of social behavior, yet the dynamics underlying the evolution of cooperation are still widely debated, with some arguing that complex cognitive abilities are necessary for cooperation to be selected. Here I use agent-based models to ask whether the simple ability to leave uncooperative groups, the ‘Walk Away’ strategy, can foster the evolution of cooperation. I find that the Walk Away strategy leads to spatial and evolutionary dynamics that promote cooperation in the absence of complex cognitive or behavioral abilities."
This describes a preconference presentation. I wonder what is presented at the "real" conference.
Imagine that!
I am going to have a pre-talk with my son, before I talk to him.
And now you can play doctor in a Vegas hotel room. Did you brings your whites? Medical lubricants?

What is a "preconference?"
The SPSP conference was going on over the weekend, but I couldn't stay because I am now in Berkeley for a newspaper conference. Just woke up. This was the one-day ev. psych conference prior to the SPSP conference, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology:

Oh, and Athena's talk on the Walkaway strategy -- cooperation versus defection (leaving) -- was pretty interesting. She's a student of AJ Figueroa, who I have a lot of respect for. He's a skeptic's skeptic, started out in animal behavior, owns a collection of swords, and is the guy you want to sit next to at dinner if you like great conversation. Which I do, and I did.
One of the best talks there was on the nature of pride, by Jessica Tracy. Last talk of the day. I hope to do a blog item on it when I'm more awake.

Please do something on the nature of pride!

Amy- now that you're a doctor, do you mind taking a look at this?
Eric at January 29, 2010 9:00 PM
What's troubling to you, Eric, the itching or the swelling?

You first, Purp! What's on your mind?

My Sister-in-law in Mexico City is a retired RN. A couple years ago, a doctor friend invited her to attend a seminar for doctors. She said her sister, my wife, was visiting her. He said, well, bring her along.
It was a nice seminar, and they were able to understand it all. But, they were both called Drs. all the time. My wife thought it was funny.
