Want Easy Access To Health Care?
Grow four legs and a tail. Here's Ted Balaker's reason.tv video on why your pet has better access to health care than you do. Of course, it's government regulation that's the problem -- legislation Nixon signed that regulates hospitals right out of opening:
On the upside, if you're a doctor, your clients are unlikely to bend around and lick their own balls.
I would not say that vets are cheap either.
So competitioon here does not seem to be a cost-curbing factor.

Amy,
When did Nixon sign that legislation, late 60's, early 70's?
Conditions identical to now? Not likely.
So, things have changed, and the law needs to be changed, but the entrenched hospitals don't want the competition. The laws created a monopoly. Just another case of government regulation that's the problem. Like that regulation about discrimination that got signed a few years before Nixon's hospital stuff.

Btw, female dogs lick their pussies too.
Um, yeah, but it's funnier to say it the way I did than "dogs lick their own genitalia," which is why I said it that way.
This is not a site that has it in for men -- quite the contrary -- so there's really no need to add, "Girls do it, to, ya know!"

I have that that dogs have better health care too! When I was struggling with giardia lambia, a parasitic infection, doctors kept telling me that it was just my nerves. (I know, Amy, that you don't know of any doctors who would not run a test - but this was MY experience)
I asked a lab to run a test for it and was told that they could not do it without a doctors orders.
I stopped by the vet's office to ask them for the test, but never got out of the car (I was too embarrassed).
Later after doctors did decide to test me, they would not just test for the parasite, they insisted on thousands of dollars worth of tests to rule out all possible problems.
Finally, I was diagnosed and given an eight dollar prescription.
I told my vet that I almost came in. They laughingly told me that they would have just given my the medicine - and it would have only cost $2.00. It was cheaper than the test - and had virtually no side effects, so ranchers just give it to their cattle a couple of times per year prophylactically.
Hmmm, maybe using a vet regularly would not be so bad an idea.

Amy,
But of course, my friend.
In fact, many times we have commented on rude and stinky people.

On the contrary, when I had a doctor who wouldn't perform what good research showed me were necessary tests I switched doctors, and got the tests I need.
I just got a test for bone density, and I also just had my vitamin D levels tested. Came in at 64, good, and I'm taking 5,000 iu daily of Biotech vitamin D.

I went to 4 doctors. I visited most several times so they could see that the problem was affecting me and I was deteriorating. When do you get frustrated?
I was finally able to get some help when I went back to my original doctor and stomped my foot and demanded that he do something - even if it was to lock me up in an insane asylum.
PS. Now I am getting great health care. It just seemed to take a medical crisis before doctors discovered that my body is not like everyone else's and symptoms may not show up the same way.

Good posting Amy. I thought it was going to be ridiculous when I first saw it, but I learned another valuable thing from your blog.
I find Jen's story really compelling. I have a neice who went through three years of hell, and probably half a million dollars worth of health care testing and care. Her disease that had her on death's door and eluded the medical community in America, Germany, and Austria? Lymes disease.

Eric -
I have a friend who went through the same thing. He finally found a local doctor that specializes in Lyme's. He's getting treatment, but it's slow and debilitating.
Part of the problem is that the average person is afraid to confront their doctor. They view the doctor as all-knowing. Not true, he's just as human as you.
My doctor continues to be amazed that I actually research the medications I'm given and I understand them.

Are you kidding me? Last year I had to put a cat down - congenital heart disease. As part of the tests I took him to a veterinary cardiologist. $600 for an echo cardiogram (yeah it was b&W), a chest tap to relieve pressure, and a 6 page report on his condition. I am unfortunately a cardiac patient myself. My echoes run 4 grand. Now mine are full color Doppler enabled, there is more value, but we don't always need the latest and greatest. I was frankly insulted when I had a simple fracture and they showed me the x rays on a wireless flat screen monitor.
You try dieing and getting cremated for a hundred and twenty bucks.
