Illegal Immigrant Health Care
Michael Vitez writes for the Philly Inquirer about "dumping" -- a family leaving an illegal immigrant relative in a U.S. hospital, and not intending to come get him or her.
Mrs. Kim is 4-foot-8, speaks no English, and has been in America, illegally, for a decade. She has arthritic knees and can no longer stand. She needs a nursing home. But none will take her.Because of her illegal status, she is ineligible for Medicaid, which pays the bill for two out of every three nursing-home residents. Without Medicaid, and with no means of her own, she became Abington's problem.
Covering illegal immigrants was a red-hot issue during the health-care debate. When President Obama vowed to Congress that "the reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally," Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina yelled, "You lie."
The final bill provides no remedy for Mrs. Kim.
On March 12, after 80 days, the charges - the sticker price that few pay - were $444,208.63. The true cost of her care, said Louis Incognito, Abington's reimbursement director, was $1,200 a day - $96,000, and rising.

This is the "tell" that the existing health-care system contains a shell game, one that deserves to be stopped, not enhanced with more government and other lying:
"On March 12, after 80 days, the charges - the sticker price that few pay - were $444,208.63. The true cost of her care, said Louis Incognito, Abington's reimbursement director, was $1,200 a day - $96,000, and rising."
Have you actually read that out loud?
The bulk of health-care spending would seem to be an outright lie, based on this man's statement. I know my Blue Cross, Blue Shield statement always contains numbers that no one was paid.
And yes, there's a fix for that!

The solution? Send her ass home. To-I"m guessing-Vietnam. The day she entered the hospital would have been a good day to do that.

What is the problem? Deport her. First class, red-carpet, all expenses paid trip back to her homeland.

Kim seems more a Korean name than a Vietnamese name but there has been a certain amount of inter-country movement over time in Asia so, really, there's no telling.
But I'd still say Korean by the name.

It has been said but it bares repeating...
All that is needed to fix this problem is an all expense paid trip back to whereever it is she snuck in from. The hospital can write off the expense as a bad debt and move on.
I also think that they should find her family and deport any of them that are illegal too. Isn't it against the law to abandon people at a hospital like that anyway? Or is there some fucking "confidentiality" law somewhere protecting these fuckers?

Meanwhile, lots of our veterans receive no care and are homeless.... grrrr.

the problem here is that the government in most cases will not let the hospital or the nursing home send them home! There is a case that was taken to congress about a florida hospital that had a patient that i think was basiclly brain dead or something like that anyways they would not let the hospital buy the plane ticket themselves to send this patient (whom was costing them millions)home to mexico or cuba or somewhere like that!
These are the things that are really going to hit us when the illegal population that is here now starts aging!!

Put me in with the others who said send her ass back where she came from. Frankly, ANY time ANYONE comes across an illegal alien, that's exactly what should happen. Period.

My husband's been here 15 years, legally, and still doesn't have citizenship, and they want to give it to the people who cut to the front of the line and broke the law.

I'm a life-long liberal Democrat, but I'm not a fool. We are undergoing exponential population growth in the US. and that growth is driven by massive immigration, legal and illegal, mandated by both major political parties. Healthcare is an issue that is severely impacted by immigration, particularly illegal aliens. My view is that anyone in the country illegally should get virtually ZERO benefits. The only exception I would make is life-saving emergency medical treatment. Anyone showing up at an emergency room with a TRUE life threatening condition should be given such treatment as is necessary to stabilize them for deportation and transport to their home country. Anyone showing up at emergency rooms for none emergency medical treatment should be held and turned over to ICE for immediate deportation.
Since the only segment of the population that benefits from illegal aliens are corporations and businesses, they should be charged an excise tax sufficient to cover the medical costs of all illegal aliens. I understand that some pro-illegal alien and amnesty advocates might think this approach too harsh. But let's face it American citizens are dying for lack of medical treatment, and I say it is better that illegal aliens not receive medical treatment than it is that US citizens not receive it.

"Since the only segment of the population that benefits from illegal aliens are corporations and businesses"
Where do you get that from? Sure, some businesses take advantage of the situation, but probably a minority. An excise tax on businesses is just as unfair as a tax applied to all individuals. Actually, it's the same thing: businesses are in the end owned by people. Numerically speaking, most businesses are small, often owned and run by a few people or a family. Why should they be taxed to pay for the government's continued incompetence?
There are only two possible solutions: either get serious about immigration enforcement, or open the borders.

If she's here illegally and she wasn't kidnapped and smuggled in, deport her.
I don't feel bad for somebody who breaks my nations laws and then expects to be cared for free of charge.

PaulC's statement really made my day:
"I'm a lifelong democrat, but I'm not a fool."

I agree with his stance...but if you have to qualify your political allegiance to point out that you're NOT foolish...you MIGHT want to give your political preferences a second thought.
Just pointing that out. ;)

Let me qualify my own remark:
While it is true that some businesses benefit from illegal labor, I don't believe a tax is the solution.
Rather I believe we should change the incentives that make it profitable to hire illegals.
For example, say a business that does not exercise due dilligence in confirming citizenship, should be made responsible for 10% of the border enfrocement budget for the year if they are found to have hired an illegal.
I think we also need give a realistic look at how sustainable it is to actually hire americans for certain low skilled work. I'm sorry, but you're not going to have a high standard of living by picking tomatos in a field. But that shouldn't be long term employment for anyone in the first place. Low skill to no skill labor should NOT be a lifelong 40 year career, and anyone who makes it one deserves whatever life they make for themselves.

Here in Hellinois, we cover all children legal and otherwise at all income levels. The effect of this policy creates a wide open barn door that beckons everyone from everywhere to our great state for fancy healthcare treatments like organ transplants. They are even coming from other countries to our state. No wonder we are dying on the vine economically.

Here in So. Ca., illegal aliens receive all manner of health care through Medi-Cal, which receives its funding from Medi-care. No one is denied treatment. Wilson was correct to call out Obama on his lie.
