I'm 37. I was raised in Massachusetts among the Irish/French-Canadian Catholic side of the family. I was taught that the only time a woman should shave her pubic hair is when she and her lover are separated temporarily (e.g., military service, work). Shaving is a symbol of her intent to remain faithful, so she remains shaven until they reunite. A shaven woman (as, not too long ago, a woman with short hair) is considered unclean (crabs, lice, etc.).

It's funny how things change over time. When I started shaving my bush in the mid 90's, I had a triangle, then a landing strip and kept it maybe half an inch long.
