And Guess What: The Milky Way Doesn't Have Actual Milk In It
Or that weird, sweet nougaty stuff, either.
From the YouTube posting:
Dallas county commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments.Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.
Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."
That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.
Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."
Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.
And here's the "black hole is a racist term!" -- Hallmark card version:
Dallas one via @WalterMooreInLA

How hard do you have to be listening to hear "black whores" in that instead of "black holes?" I had to play the video twice to figure out where the supposed racism was.
As far as the first video, this might be the dumbest thing I've heard in a while:
He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."
Beyond the stupidity of finding racism in a scientific term that denotes the actual color of something, I am astounded that he thinks that means it's okay to call it a "white hole" because it's insulting to white people. If it's racist, it's racist either way.
Best case scenario: he actually didn't know what "black hole" meant. And that's equally as worrisome.
This reminds me of an episode of "The West Wing" where a woman calls out Sam for supposedly being sexist and demeaning toward another female colleague, who didn't find anything sexist about the comment (which was about how she looked in her dress-- she found it flattering and proof that she was one of the team). She said that getting all het up about stupid stuff like that takes away from honest-to-God sexual harassment cases. Well, I feel the same way about bullshit like this. Making a big stink about a black hole ain't fixing anyone's racism problems.

This is not as worrisome as the head of the Detroit School System. There is a fine example for the students.
This guy is just a politician.

Wow, that's a new one. Don't tell Steven Hawking!

Yeesh. I had a job in college with some young WMST students as coworkers who were as overly sensitive and *looking* for conflict like this guy.
They are *tiresome* people.
Steve at June 19, 2010 6:26 AM
Oh for fuck's sake. Shit like this make racism worse. It makes white people afraid to say *anything* around black people. It makes people who know what things like black holes and niggardly mean think that these particular black people are morons and start questioning how black people could make such ignorant jerkoffs leaders.
Incidentally, there have been theories about the existence of white holes. A white hole being the opposite of a black hole, spewing matter and light out. So a collection that was a white hole would be sending out paperwork by the ton.
Let's just call a spade a spade. Or consider it a case of the pot calling the kettle black. (I could not resist)

Nah, Steve, they were not looking for conflict, they were looking for an opportunity to bully. Actual conflict involves a risk of them losing the engagement; they don't want to risk that.
Such people are weak-minded, scared social predators, casting about for victims using the bogus racial/gender studies teachings as their cudgels. They do this hoping to elevate their own status by noisily pushing others down the status ladder(and here is the key part) in full view of everyone else.
Al Sharpton is perhaps the quintessential example of this.
When you encounter such folks, staying mum and letting them talk is key. Then, any instance where they pause for a breath, just ask direct, simple questions about their whacked out views, to keep them talking. Ask about how they propose to solve any problem they identify, what steps they would take, etc. With these people, more details brings out the crazy in bold relief.
Sometimes they will end up offering wild visions of society that are pretty much totalitarian schemes. And you don't even have to argue with them--just ask the questions quietly, politely and without commenting on the answers.
Eventually, every person with any sense listening to them realizes they are nuts and not to be trusted, and none of the crazy sticks to you. But *don't* engage directly with them in a social setting, like work or school or a party, since they will escalate the debate, call you racist, sexist, whatever, and demand that *you* defend yourself against a charge that cannot be disproven.

The Dallas Commissioners was a while back (July 2008). But it was stupidity & ignorance then, and still is now.
As far as the card -- why do you think Halllmark spun off several other companies like Shoebox Greetings. Those can get away with the non-PC stuff.

I can't wait to see the rest of the Hallmark jigaboo line. They'll probably try to sell them around MLK day.

Jim Im sure Amy only reposted the idiot politicians to highlight the stupidity of the NAA(black only)CP complaint

What a bunch of illiterate morons. It would be great if some African-American science professors would step forward and tell the NAACP that they are just making blacks look like ignorant fools.
KarenW at June 19, 2010 8:30 AM
No more black holes!
Just honky holes.
Martin at June 19, 2010 8:38 AM
Wouldn't it have been easier to say "black hoes"? Seems like it would be easier to lose the L than to insert an R. Just a niggling little detail.

A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."
Sadly, stupidity can escape from this intense gravitational field...

Perhaps "Judge Thomas Jones" should become a phrase for someone who is unbelievably ignorant and stupid.
Tony at June 19, 2010 8:50 PM
Hey, let's not be niggardly about this. . .

Should have added this link to my above comment, for those who don't get the reference.

1)This is an obvious example of a mindset that is seeking out racism.
2)This is either someone trying to use the charge of racism as a technique for victory -- or a sad display of ignorance.
3) Our society is incrementally diminished by these kinds of weak minded tactics.
4)Unfortunately these types of tactics will continue to have some varying level of success. It will lose its 'edge' only when more organizations that disseminate information, a.k.a. the main stream media, shine a spotlight on ridiculous conduct such as this.
5)#4 is happening, I hope, slowly but surely. From Fox News to this blog, alternative views contrary to the ultra hollywood liberal choke hold on the media are making it to more and more segments of the population.
** Not that Fox News is the gospel truth, however, it is an important alternative to the ultra liberal media that continues to dominate what people see and hear **
TW at June 20, 2010 12:44 AM
Whether the office is a black or white hole, certain commissioners are clearly assholes...
Ltw at June 20, 2010 9:36 PM
I would have just looked at him after he asked if he could get an apology and said, "Yes, I believe I will. I would like to apologize to all the rest of the people here for you being a scientifically ignorant, race-baiting jackass who apparently believes a 'Black Hole' to be that thing you can't find with both hands and a set of directions."
