LA Press Club Awards
Got two first place awards -- one for a series of my columns, and one for my headline, "When Hairy Palms Met Sally."
My blog (and thank you all, all you regulars!) garnered a second place, and I got an honorable mention for Journalist of the Year in papers under 50K circ.
Here I am at the end of the evening. (I had to wear glasses to see the screen -- one of those post-age-40 things!)
Congratulations!
I love your columns & Love It that you wore your glasses! I need mine too, it is a post 40 thing. Seeing you dolled up and wearing yours makes me overjoyed to wear mine no matter the occasion. Thank you for being such a positive poster-gal for us mid life types!

Could your be slimmer?? Geez, not I really HAVE to go buy Taube's book! Congrats!
momof4 at June 28, 2010 4:48 AM
Congratulations, Ms. Alkon! And I dig the glasses, too -- kind of a nerd-chic sort of thing, which I've always liked.
Taube or no Taube, I'll bet you could stand a hot fudge sundae once in a while, though!

Congratulations, Amy! You look amazing. And I recommend lasik. Had one of my eyes done a little far-sighted and the other a little nearsighted, so no glasses at 46.

Thank you all so much. And re: slim...it is the very low-carb eating! No starvation, and plenty of bacon!

That must be a wonderful feeling! Congrats on the awards and staying in shape post 40 - something not easy to do - I keep being told.

Thanks so much, Primrose. Actually, it's exceptionally easy. Just read the book I linked to above and cut out carbs. I eat bacon, eggs, cheese, butter, green vegetables swimming in dressing or butter, steak, hamburger, chicken, pork, and I always make sure I eat plenty of fat. What I don't eat: sugar, flour, starchy carbohydrates -- including fruit or (horrors!) fruit juice. Might as well drink a Coke.

I don't think I can get it done for my eyes, but maybe that's not true. Right now, it's only stuff like signs in the distance I can't really read. I can see fine on the computer and in books or papers up close.
Amy Alkon at June 28, 2010 6:45 AM
Congratulations!! You truly deserve it! And I'm with everyone else...you look fabulous!

Amy, they've really improved lasik and can perform it now on people with astigmatisms and other factors that they couldn't before. It's well worth looking into. But if your sight is good except for distance, it may not be necessary. The reason we lose our distance sight in middle age is due to a muscle in the eye. They can compensate for it, as they did in my case, by making you slightly farsighted, but I don't know if they can fix it completely. My vision was 20/15 right after lasik at age 42, but I've noticed my distance isn't quite that good anymore. Still, I don't need glasses or contacts, which is wonderful.

The eye doctor explained it to me a few years back but I forgot what the deal was. I think I should probably wait a few years. It's rough suddenly needing glasses -- while Gregg has worn glasses all his life, I've taken for granted that I could read a matchbook cover from across the street. All of a sudden, the road signs got blurry, and I couldn't see as clearly when driving at night.
What's weird to me is the fact that the state has to require people to wear glasses when they drive. What kind of jerk drives without them when they can't quite see? (As the author of a book on inconsideration, I know the answer to that.)
PS For any frugally minded vision-impaired people, my glasses cost me $54.94. $14.99 for Borghese reading glasses at CVS, $35 for eyeglassdirect.com to fill my prescrip and $4.95 for shipping. I think you can get cheaper prescrip glasses made, but I've been using eyeglassdirect and they do a good job.

@Miss Alkon: "$35 for eyeglassdirect.com to fill my prescrip and $4.95 for shipping."
Never worked with a mail-order eyeglasses provider before, but the price sure looks right. How does that work? Do you just send the presecription to them? How do you size the frames?

You do have to measure something called your "pupillary distance" -- but I managed to do that without a problem. I guess if you have an eye exam, you can ask the doctor to to do that.

Just had three strips, plus a cheese omelet and a big clump of parsley sauteed in butter (I eat it like sauteed spinach every morning -- lots of vitamins).

And to add to the idea of buying eyeglasses on line, I've also used goggles4u.com and I paid around $50-60 including shipping and I'm super nearsighted. You need to type in your prescription and it should have the PD measurement on it, if not, any eyeglass place can take it for you. The last pair I bought, blue wire frames are as nice as the pair I bought at the eyeglass place for $400.

Beaucoup congratulations on your much-deserved L.A. Press Club Awards! Love the gorgeous photo of you, too! As an over-40 gal who has cute-looking "reader" glasses stashed all over my home, I was especially pleased to see you looking so sharp and stylish in your specs. May good fortune continue to come your way!

Congrats, Amy, and yes, you look great! Regarding the eyesight, if it has gotten worse very quickly, you might want to get checked for glaucoma and macular degeneration.

You heifer! Start following the USDA dietary guidelines, or you're setting yourself up for a world of hurt with the chronic diseases associated with obesity, like heart disease and diabetes!
Of course, I'm kidding. You're fabulous, and I love that you constantly point out this kind of idiocy. Hopefully, one day, more people will get the message.
