I'm glad you said guess because I haven't researched it to give an informed answer. My guess would be men get tougher sentences for crimes of passion. Most crimes of passion are usually cases of escalating domestic violence, a if I can't have him/her, nobody can. Most likely there have been previous incidents and evidence of control in the relationship. Since the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, Domestic Violence issues have gotten more awareness and more media attention. If a man commits the act, he's an abuser and often described in stalkerish behavior. When women commit the act, it doesn't seem to garner the same sense of horror. Its either made into a joke or she's portrayed as a victim in some cases. I'm not saying that is the correct perception, just that from what I see, that seems to be the way it is portrayed. There are rare exceptions to when a woman is painted as cold-blooded, but usually children have to be involved.

Another benefit of western women is the female sentencing discount.

We all know that women are basically insane, especially as regards anything to do with relationships. A man might kill you for sleeping with his girlfriend, but a woman will lie awake plotting your demise over something you DIDN'T say. Which is to say, men have only one or two kinds of "crimes of passion" while women have scores of them, so it's only fair they should get a bulk discount.

My guess is that it would depend upon the crime. In general, it seems to me that women tend to get longer sentences for major crimes of passion but are much less likely to be convicted. As if by the time they have reached a point where they are convicted the jury is really upset and adding extra punishment.

On what planet does this happen?
The lady, I believe in Tennesee, that shot gunned her priest husband while he slept, got I beleive 89 days in jail.
The lady in Texas that repeatedly ran over her husband a dentist while she had her daughter in the car. I know she didn't get life.

According to Dept of Justice stats, women recieve 1/3 of the sentence men do, for the same crime.
Add to that a more sympathetic jury, leading to lower convictions.
A sympathetic prosecution, giving them more deals and often choosing to not prosecute.
You also have like with Lohan, a major difference in the % of the time men and women serve in there sentence. Men generally serve about 52% of the sentence, women 20-25%.
Leading to the real reason jails are 93% men.
