Why prosecute illegal aliens when you can reward them for breaking the law?

jerry brown was a joke as governor 30 years ago and has the nads to try again? please somebody shoot him
ron at October 17, 2010 9:20 AM
I'm holding my nose and voting for Whitman...but we'll need to have Strickland voted in too for it to make an iota of difference than casting a vote for Brown.
I do not want to see Gov. Medfly back in the Gov seat.
Feebie at October 17, 2010 10:34 AM
ron, the scary thing is not that he's running again, but that he stands a pretty good chance of winning. If he wins, can we declare California to be a failed state and send in the military to run it?

California's been a failed state for years.

Feebie, let me ask a question. And I'm not asking to be sarcastic; I'm asking because I don't know. What is it that a lot of California libertarians find so odious about Whitman? I know she hasn't been very skilled as a candidate, but I don't know of any particularly anti-libertarian positions she has taken, and she doesn't appear to be a flake a la Fionia.

This, unfortunately, is always my position at the polls, especially in California.
I wish Mickey Kaus had a chance for Senator. He'd actually do a great job. I left the "Mickey Kaus for Senator" sign on my mailbox for months.

Even if you can't vote for Whitman, you can send her $5 or so to help her win. I did. We have GOT to take back enough seats to defund Obamacare. It's do or die on that, and I'm contributing what I can in every close race.

Whitman is running for governor. She can't defund Obamacare. Fiorina is running for senator. She can vote to defund Obamacare...if elected.
Conan the Grammarian at October 17, 2010 11:53 AM
Momof4, what are you talking about? Meg Whitman as governor will have no impact on representation in Congress. Money also isn't helping her at all, she's outspent Jerry by record amounts and still can't hold a lead.
I'm really disappointed by Whitman, she's clearly a remarkable and talented person but her campaign has been short on details, really negative, and (to me) offensively expensive. I just can't wait until this is over, I'm tired of being disgusted.
Sam at October 17, 2010 12:01 PM
While the governors can't defund Obamacare, they can order their Attorney's General to fight mandate.
Unfortunately -- we don't have enough people of character in the government to tell the government you are overstepping.
The most scariest sentence ever uttered: "We are from government and are here to help."
We are so hosed.

Cousin Dave:
Meg is a little soggy for me. She doesn't take a hard line on immigration. She's just kinda ...blah. I don't hate her...I just don't think she'll be very tough. Kinda like an Arnie II. That is what I am seeing right now.
I could be wrong, very wrong and I hope I am. What I do like about her is that she's worked in the private sector, and knows about wealth creation and running a business...THAT I do like.
I guess I need to be more realistic since this is California, but what I wouldn't do to have an opportunity to vote in a Gov Christie in this State.
Jerry Brown though, is just abysmal.
Feebie at October 17, 2010 11:55 PM
Jerry Brown is proof that you don't need a brain to live.
brian at October 18, 2010 9:48 AM
Brian, you live in Connecticut, WHY DO YOU CARE?
Sam at October 18, 2010 5:46 PM
Allow me to offer an answer to that question, Sam... the answer is that America needs a healthy and economically energetic California. Look, it's easy (and fun!) for me to sit over here in Alabama and throw brickbats at the Worst Coast. (See, I told you it was fun!) But realistically, I know that when it comes time that an economic engine can lead us out of the Great Recession, Alabama with its whopping 4M population isn't going to be it. I think/hope that we will make a positive contribution and set a good example, but we just aren't big enough or wealthy enough to turn the nation around on our own.
California is an icon of America to the world. People from other countries consider it one of the most desirable places in the world to live. It has an economy larger than most countries of the world. And it has almost one-sixth of the House of Representatives all by itself. We need California up at the plate, not on the disabled list. Otherwise we wind up like the Braves without Chipper and Prado... trying hard, but just not enough oomph there.
Cousin Dave at October 18, 2010 6:33 PM
Well, if that's your interest Cousin Dave, you're going to be better off with Jerry Brown than Meg Whitman. (I say this as someone who is not excited to vote either way.) The legislature will probably work (to the "best" of their limited ability) with Jerry. If Meg Whitman gets elected, she and the CA legislature will make zero progress because they'll just bitch at one another. Meg Whitman thinks running CA will be like running eBay and it's just not, a governor is not a CEO.
CA also isn't going under because of benefits paid out to illegal immigrants, CA is going under because everyone wants Prop 13 level property taxes but doesn't want the corresponding (lower) level of tax funded programs.
